Agreed.

T.M Revolution > Music

Sore ga Seiyuu exceeded my expectations. My hype when they broke out A Cruel Angel's Thesis in the ED.

DAT MOMENT. I was completely shocked lol

Sunrise is goat. They're gintama's production studio, after all lol

BTW I started watching himouto! Umaru Chan. From the creators of gekkan shoujo nozaki kun comes another comedy title that I probably will love a lot. It's like oreimo without incest. :p

Umaru-chan looks rather fun, if not potentially infuriating.

Anyone here have Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo in recent memory? I finished it yesterday and am suddenly in the mood for discussion. Like how I enjoyed the hell out of NGNL yet somehow felt incredibly cynical watching this; couldn't stand the male "protagonist" for starters.

That sets off some red flags for me.

I was thinking about looking into Problem Children, but it being compared to NGNL makes me...less interested (potentially). Looking up the plot from a very shallow wikipedia article shows that it's a Death Game show- if not actually involving death than simply just in genre name, which doesn't really bother me too much. Hell, I don't mind the genre at all, I enjoyed the manga of Pre-Duel Monsters Yu-Gi-Oh! just fine and it was pretty much the same deal in that regard.

But looking at it from an aesthetics point of view I do have worries. I don't think I've said it before, but the two largest reasons I didn't like NGNL were that the game were logical when they wanted to be but really only played by the rules that would benefit the plot most. In other words, they didn't have to make sense so long as they worked out for the story (which is why the Chess game really rubbed me the wrong way). The second thing was that once the females become side characters, they stopped having any sort of depth to their personalities and instead devolved into convinient fanservice (though prior to that point, they're personalities as opponents aren't bad. Couple this with a main protag I couldn't completely get behind and a stoic hype machine I wasn't completely digging (I'm pretty neutral on the Shiro side of things) and you get...well, dissatisfaction.

So in short, I mostly didn't like it due to the relative logic and characters, and the latter's pretty important because even if cool shit's happening, it's really hard to enjoy what's going on when you don't really care for those involved (I make similar statements about SAO and...Mirai Nikki, I suppose). My friends seemed to be enjoying Problem Children for, from what I remember, were more reasons that one would enjoy an ecchi than a compelling experience, but other than that and what I've read, I don't particularly know much about this show. Is it something I probably won't like since I didn't like NGNL?

From what I remember of NGNL the game logic was worse in Problem Children. The "logic fights" consisted of either stupidly simple solutions no one apparently thought about or convoluted pieces of random trivia being used to solve problems without any real rhyme or reason. I've read that the anime dumbed things down considerably, and I believe that was to the show's detriment.

Actually, the female "sidekicks" were much more properly fleshed out as characters than the main guy, so you've got that going. The two main heroines had motivation and internal conflicts going on. The guy had no such things, and most interactions with him consisted of him looking smug and kicking everyone's ass while the females commented on how good he was.

>>Fan of NGNL and regretting nothing
I don't really see why anyone'd be ashamed of liking a show. If you like NGNL, you like NGNL; there's nothing wrong with that. Personally, I'm far more sour about the popularity of "This Game" than I am of the show, mostly because- from what I'm aware (because lord knows I didn't look into it)- the things people like about the show don't really overlap with what I think its low points are. This Game, though. That's another story, largely because I feel as if that song...eh, well, it doesn't matter. I've mentioned all the hooplah about it in the past. The only reason I care about their popularity is because of how they affect the industry- you know, if a show does well and exhibits traits X and Y (that are unhealthy, but popular), other studios will take note and also employ X and Y in their shows (which leaks into L/VNs and games, as well). But as far as anyone's personal enjoyment, I don't give a good god damn. You like what you like.

Hm...that's a real mixed bag you described there. I can't much say I'd be willing to get into the manga unless I can find it physically, and the bit about the characters...I suppose that really depends on how bad the main is, whether I'll be able to enjoy it. If he's mediocre and not overly bad but is supported by good characters, at least that much would be bearable...but I can't say I'm much for the smug protag that's both unlikeable and keeps winning- hell, that was pretty much the entirety of NGNL (though the main guy wasn't that bad- he was certainly mediocre at worst).

I'll give it a look, though. Not soon, probably when I'm bedridden and unable to stop the playlist of episodes.

Good plan―it was a show I had to semi-marathon for it to work, myself: I'd be all bitter at the end of an episode, having predicted some twist and just having watched all the characters be continuously surprised by the amount of ass the guy was kicking for the umpteenth time. Then the ED pops up and I'd be happy again, because both the intro and outro of that show are brettu gud, and I'd go, you know what, maybe that wasn't so bad. This show isn't about telling an interesting story, it's about having fun. This is fun. The playlist will put on the next one if I just let the ED run, so let's do just one more. Rinse and repeat. That's how you fill out your anime list, kids.

Ha! :P I was just kidding anyway, even as a fan of whatever series I can recognize the good and bad things about it. What you have both mentioned about NGLG can't be neglected lol.

Mondaiji definitely is in my memory as it was one of a few gems of its cour.
But NGNL had Shiro. Shiro is love.

I don't see what issued one would face with "This Game", though? I personally thought it was a fantastic opening and Konomi Suzuki cemented her place as one of my fave artists with that song (and a few other works I've listened to in the past - Watamote and Freezing S2 openings, namely).

As for NGNL, well, this is what I think (heh, another tl;dr incoming!)

Firstly, the thing that impressed me the most about the show were the aesthetics. I LOVED how everything was so freakin' colorful. It probably turned some people off due to the so called "over-saturation" but I think they struck a good balance between saturating the screen with all sorts of colors and making it extremely obnoxious. Also liked how the real world looked relatively monotonous with those B&W colors. That, and I thought that the animation was pretty well-handled. The effects (DEM EYES) were particularly stylish. :3

There was nothing that stood out a lot from the OST - nothing particularly remarkable but I thought it was fitting for the most part. Nothing felt incredibly misplaced, at least.

I do agree that some of the games, the chess one especially, didn't make any semblance of sense. But then again, NGNL is one of those series where the perspective you choose to go with - going into the series - plays a large role in determining the amount of enjoyment you'd get out of the show. After the game of cards (first episode), I stopped thinking of it as an anime that'd concentrate on things making sense and on genuinely intellectual tricks but would rather focus on being a "fun fun cool shit fun fun" anime. As a result, underwhelming as the chess match was, it still didn't make me feel all salty/bitter about the anime. In fact, as a result of my attitude towards the show, I greatly enjoyed the game they later had with Jibril. Naah, not just that (although it was THE peak the show attained as far as my opinion goes), I greatly enjoyed everything the show threw at us that point onwards.

Sora and Shiro were both fairly lacking in depth. But I usually don't look for depth in shows like NGNL, you know, ones that serve no other purpose than to entertain you on a weekly basis, so I was fine with that. Other characters were just there to compliment them and serve as set-pieces of sorts. They served no other purpose than to make Sora and Shiro look cool doing cool shit. Which they succeeded with, I guess, judging by the amount of fun I had with the series. One character that could've been handled better was the red haired female human character. But that's just one issues I have with the series that didn't detract much from the fun I had with it, overall.

One thing that seperated this series from stuff like SAO, I think, is the fact that it doesn't seem to take itself as seriously as the others. It knows it is spouting shit that's supposed to sound cool - it does that in a totally flashy way and isn't weighed down by annoyances like unnecessary drama and serious sub-plots. Inclusion of those elements probably would've made it worse since none of the characters were interesting enough for me to actually be interested in character-drama involving them. Hence, the approach that it took (concentrate on DA COOL SHIT, YO) worked for me.

wow I thought DCC is daily chit chat not walls of text explaining about the good and the bad of an anime lol.

jk but yeah, I can see from both sides regarding NGNL. Doesn't stop me from liking Sora somehow (shut up I have my own tastes <_<).

We three do that sometimes - machoboy, me and Pokey lol. Walls o texts. Don't mind us. :p

It also leads to some good discussions at times which I'm definitely a fan of. :3

Indeed, and after all, if we don't have this discussion here, we probably just wouldn't have the discussion at all. And it's just healthy, civil stuff that's nothing short of constructive- it's not like we're trashing each other's opinion or trying to make people feel bad about what they're into- which is really the most you can ask of an anime community, all things considered.

We're pretty lucky.
