if shedinja has only 1 hp, and every attack has to do at least 1 damage, why does shedinja has defense stats?

I believe that one of the main reasons for this is due to the move Transform. It copies all the stats of the opposing Pokemon except HP, so if a Ditto were to switch into a Shedinja, it'd have a fighting chance, rather than being stuck with no HP, Defense or Special Defense. I'm sure that there are other applications for it as well, but that's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

And since this is a situation that only applies to the games rather than the series as a whole, I'm going to move your thread over to Pokemon Gaming Central for you.

    MOVED.

You're overlooking Shedinja's Wonder Guard ability. With it, Shedinja is immune to all attacks except for super effective attacks. It also doesn't stop residual damage from entry hazards, weather, burn and poison.

It doesn't help that Shedinja has weaknesses that are generally considered common types.

I see Flying, Rock, Ghost, Fire, and Dark types the most out of all types in the competitive battling scene. Whether that be Pokemon who carry that type or Pokemon that carry a move of that type.

Shedinja just doesn't get a chance to use his Wonder Guard because of how common those types are. Doesn't help with the 'useless' factor.

Shedinja was actually pretty decent in competitive battling (especially OU), as well as the in-game Battle Subway/Tower. Focus Sash or Lum Berry would be the best item to equip it with.

It was a pretty good sweeper before hazards became commonplay.

Shedinja has an ability that's only really defeated by damage from hazards, status, weather and super effective typing, something up until Gen 6 was something The 2 Ghost/Dark types would've excelled in if they had the ability. The 1hp is balancing for Sheddy, and if it didn't have defense stats, all those leftovers would go to speed or attack, something Shedinja does amazingly well in the right circumstances.

destiny bond, always OP especially with quick claw

spirtomb and bronzong. destiny bond with spiritomb then switch to bronzong, he'll take the hits, revive spiritomb, switch, use destiny bond, repeat process
