VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs

Basically, it is lite, plays most codecs(video/audio) file, FREE, hence great!

Sorry I can't yet post the full link(not enough posts).

VLC is a pretty good player, but it struggles often times with .mkv files and displaying subtitles. To be sure, it does play them- but sometimes it isn't pretty, especially when you want to jump around in the video.

Personally I use Media Player Classic (not to be confused with Windows Media Player). It comes default with a few codec packs, such as the acclaimed Combined Community Codec Pack. If you configure it correctly, you can get MPC to play ANYTHING. Currently I have MPC set up to play everything that VLC can play plus REAL medai and Quicktime formats. It's a lot sleeker, and a heck of lot smoother than VLC.

VLC is still far better than Windows Media Player, though.

    I LOVE VLC!!! :P

I use it all the time. It is the best media player I have ever seen!

I got VLC since uh... early this year. It's good. I pretty much use it for files that WMP cannot play.

its an Ok player, I mainly use it for files that I can't play on Quicktime, WMP, and Zoomplayer. huh i guess that means i only use it for MKV files.

Zoom player IMO is better once you download it from the cccp codec pack then just download the Zoom player update from the zoom player website and then you're all good to go watch basically anything

I must agree here. Am sure VLC works great and because it's portable i will probably need it in the future. For now MPC plays anything i want and starts up in 1 second, literaly. Much better than waiting for things like WMP or itunes to chug into life.

I use VLC because it's just so lightweight and I can pretty much count on it to play anything right out of the box. Never tried MPC though - I might have to give it a whirl.

    WMP sucks.
