Welcome message, can it be disabled?

Its cute, but annoying. Is there a way to disable it? I hate when the forums have rotating thread names and I skip an entire day when pranks like these are pulled. Is there a way to disable the randomly switching names in general, especially the welcoming message?

Can I just ask how can something as minuscule as this be annoying? It's not like it's a fixed point in your screen. I mean, if you scroll down enough it will be entirely out of your sight.

The very purpose of an annoyance is something minuscule that bothers you. Doesn't matter what it is and they can vary person to person. I don't like it and yes I notice it when the pages change. It annoys me. An annoyance doesn't have to make sense as its personal issues. I would just like a choice to be able to disable it. Everyone on staff should already know I hate these types of things.

I did mention in the other thread, although I think it was missed, that some of the longer welcome messages push it on to two lines, which looks a bit ugly :(. Blame the proportions of the screen, am I the only one who doesn't have this window fully maximised? XD

I don't think the idea in general is bad, it's quite cool and some are funny, but I'd love a little prune of the longer ones ><.

I could explain it as far as I go: cycling messages are annoying because I know they cycle. I feel compelled to check it and like I wasted my time when I do. They don't bother me that much (yet?) but they really should stay Pokemon-related imo; random references make me think like "ugh shut up and go away".

    This too.

I think it's good we get a variety though. It'd be kind of boring if they were all pokemon references, especially since a majority of PC isn't really into pokemon as much as they used to be. To me, it fits the needs of all the most common interests here, or just things that everyone can understand.

I don't mind them so much. I like them because they are fun, even if I see one over a dozen times. It does get tiring to see the same ones over and over. I think it will take time to get used to it. That sounds strange coming from someone who despises changes. XD

As for disabling them for members, I do agree with Audy. You gotta remember that for most people, this is a new feature. Not everyone is going to like it, and Audy isn't going to be able please everybody. He's only doing what he thinks will make the forums more enjoyable for us. It would be rather tedious for him to disable it for others or to have a feature that allows disabling. I don't know why anyone would want that when it's something that you can easily ignore.

But that's just my opinion. :/

I don't want them removed, I'd just like to have the option to disable them for myself because I don't like it and I like the theme I'm using.

Because not everyone will like it. There is no harm in having an off switch for those that don't like it. I'd like to keep things as plain and simple as they can be. I hate it when we have those stupid color changing jokes for certain holidays. I stay off the entirety of April first because that entire holiday is just dumb.

What can be cute and harmless to one person is annoying. I can see its not going to happen, so I guess I'll just stay logged off so I don't have to deal with something I find incredibly annoying.

I'd like an option to disable this too.

I don't like it, either. A simple "Welcome, [member]" should be sufficient. Why do I have to sit through this cycle of welcome messages? It doesn't bother me much, but yes, I'd like an option.

I'm really, really not a fan of this. It was cute for a few refreshes but the messages are so varying in length that they get really distracting if you have a short one and then a long one. Unless I'm purposefully looking for information in that corner of the screen (ie, settings), my eyes should only be drawn to that section of the page if I have notifications waiting. Every time I look up there because of an abnormally long welcome message, I start to train myself to try to ignore it. Eventually the only time I will notice if I have notifications is when I'm purposefully looking there for other reasons, like changing settings or something. This is already a problem I'm having because apparently I got a VM several hours ago and despite looking up at that area of the screen often, the large welcome text (I'm using the Color Flattered theme) is so distracting that I didn't even notice there were notifications until now. (I haven't been on PC the whole time but I've been checking in periodically throughout the day.)

Admittedly it's a lot better on other themes where the welcome text is much smaller. (Although the long messages still make the whole notifications section format strangely when they stretch the container...) So I'll switch to an older theme if we aren't getting the option to turn it off, but I had rather warmed up to Color Flattered and it's just too imposing on that one for me to use it anymore and that kind of sucks. :( I feel terrible complaining about this because it is something so small but I really can't stand it.

I think it's cute, but it is a little bit distracting. My eyes trail towards it more often than I would like them to :( it's not a gigantic problem, but I, too, prefer simplicity. Things changing and moving around that are as noticeable (I'm always looking in that direction for notifications after all) distract me.

Isn't never logging on again over one little welcome greeting in the corner that you can just scroll past, a little too dramatic? I don't see how these are such a annoying thing. It's more interesting than the generic, boring "Welcome, [Username] message. It just to show how fun of a forum we are. So are the colored names on holidays and the April Fools pranks. None of these are such a big deal honestly. There's something you can do called "scroll past and ignore it".

No says you have to spend time refreshing the page and see all of them did they?

Maybe if we get the server time stuck in 11:59 PM, April 1st, we can justify the welcome messages...

What does that have to do with anything?

It's distracting, period. Harmless, but distracting. You guys are overly defensive.

It's not really THAT distracting. I literally just ignore them most of the time. Defensive and nitpicky.

I honestly thought this was a late April Fools joke. I was gonna ask to have it disabled, but I figured it'd be temporary so I chose to wait.

I didn't expect the plan was to have it as the standard from now on..

Cherrim explained it. I keep looking at it thinking I got a notification because it changes every time I refresh. Similarly, if I learn to ignore it, then I could easily miss notifications.

I don't find it funny, I find it annoying and distracting. Honestly overreacting over a small complaint is worse than complaining about a small feature, if you ask me. Some of us LIKE it simple, why are we nitpicky for that?
