what are your views on roms? in my opinion they are bad. i think their like stealing from nintendo *or other companys*
now. id like to know your opinions!

ROMs are illegal so they are bad. But this arguement can be said for lots of things.

The only "good" use for ROMs I can see is sprites and screenshots.

Ya....I'd have to agree with both of you....

    I've never used them....never will!

I don't think the hacks are that bad though....

    on top of triforce89's arguement:

    -it's free

-for finding out top secrets, such as Deoxys and Jirachi... without rom hacking, we won't know a thing about them until Nintendo feels like it

    -it's free

-using Pokemon for example again, it's the only way to find the detailed information about a game... who the heck will know how Hidden Power works without hacking and so on?

    -it's free

-for a ROM to be made, a copy of the game is still needed in order to make the ROM

    -it's free

-refer to the pirating softwares/music download arguement in the computer section... really these two overlap each other quite well. ROM is like the pirated version of a game, in similiar relationship to music downloading or software pirating

-did I mention that it's free? I don't think so, so "It's free"

This is about video game dumps I?m pretty sure, so I?ll move it there unless that wasn?t the kind of ROMs you meant.

Anyways, what a lot of people don?t realize is the companies develop these games on the computer so they?re playing ?ROMs? and that?s how some magazines will preview games I imagine. As for on the consumer level, there are legitimate uses of backup copies such as data extraction. The problem is the internet is so fast now, distribution of backups is very easy.

On a personal level I own a lot of games and have no problem paying for them. Just the same, I have a lot of ROMs of games I don?t own and I?m fine with that too. for GBA ROMs, the biggest factors for me is how it?s played. If it?s an RPG where I could train on the go, I may end up buying it and transferring saves from the computer. But I also love save states and speeding up the game on the computer. Emulators add a lot of functionality and such.

I say ROMS distrubited over the internet are worng even if you own the game. ROMS made by you from your oringnal game and not distrubited and only used for your back up copy is find with me. Of cource the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, dose not permitte any kind of cracking copyrighted code even for your own personal use which I see as stupid.

even backup roms are illegal. nintendo clearly states backups are illegal

Yes, but Nintendo is about the only one who is having a firm stance on emulation. They try everything in their power to stop it.

The main reason I use them are for screenshots, sprites, and Zelda related text purposes. I've used them to play a game.

Yep! Nintendo do make a big deal out of it. About 7 months ago, the SNES was released in China(and surrounding countries). Wanna know why they where late 20 years? Piracy. China and Taiwan have the worst case of piracy in the world. You know how GCN games can't be copied? China/Taiwan would of found a way. They know their stuff!

Hmm.. ROM. Read Only Memory. Your computer can't run without them. How can they be illigal? SO my views: they are a great thing!

^Sorry about that. I don't like it when people have to associate an entire group of technology just because it can be used for illegal purposes. I'm mainly talking about MP3's. It's an audio compression format, and people claim them as ripped music now. Makes it sound bad <_<

The ones your talking about, I personally don't know what to feel about them. They have a lot of upsides to them, but they do drain a lot of money from my favourite company Ә_Җ... But if you own the original game it's ok to use it to experiment with things. Remember the missingno glitch in R/B? See I tried that on teh ROM so I won't screws up my own game. You can get screenshots and sprites from them. Theres a lot, but honestly I don't aprove of it unless you own the original. The only times I download game ROMs is when I have to wait in this freakin' country 7 extra months from 00SA(USA) to get a game. Thats a complete joke to have to wait that long!

GCN ISOs have already been made, and using the PSO exploit they can be fed into a GCN. =\ Unless you're talking about material copies...

...& I bet every one of you dirty little thieves use roms.

    LoL/JK

I personally like roms & will continue to use them until I'm scooped up by the FBI. Besides, 98% of the roms I have on my PC are games I already own. The only 2 roms I don't have games for are the Japanese FR/LG rom & an old NES rom for Metal Gear.

I look down on Rom's, they spoil the suprise of a new game and when you finnaly get the game yourself, it just isn't new anypore

I never knew that. OMG...... OMFG!!!!! meh! big deal it's not as big an issue as the ones for teh PS2 *laughs demonically*

For me, the only reason I'd use a ROM is to see if it's worth the money to buy the game. Play the game for a bit to see if it has lifetime. If it does, then I'll buy it and rid of it's existence on my computer. Otherwise, I'll leave it alone and rid of it on my computer as well. On the other hand, if it's a sequel to the game I bought and enjoyed, then I'll buy it without testing. Simple as that.

I'll leave the sprites and all the "secrets" of games to those who actually are interested in the complication of accomplish such tasks. I've a life to live here, and I want to make the best of it. :P

i personally like roms. i can take screenshots of the game and also record sounds and AVI files. Plus it is kinda fun playing a game on computer instead of on a Gameboy. It also gives me an idea on whether or not to buy the game.

I like them because u can play games that are not out
