I nickname my pokemon because I hate the block captials (yes, I'm really that OCD)

And I name all my Pokemon after German words that correspond to their gender, some fitting and some completely random.

Me and my friend both got our games on the same day. I got heartgold. He got soul silver. We also named our rivals after our characters ingame name.

Favorite Pokemon: (Vaporeon) I named him ALMAZEON, because ALMAZ is Diamond in another language. Once a get a female Shiny Vaporeon for a two on two battles, she'll be name LOULEEON, because LOULEE is Pearl in another language.

Normally, I just name my pokemon after their species names, just with good grammar. This means I have a team of NFEs until Goldenrod City, at least. It adds variety to the game :)
