For example! I really liked how the anime characterized the pokemon. Ash's oshawott was playful and silly, Tepig was determined and friendly, Snivy was sassy and a calm type, Iris's Emolga was a diva, and so on! It really made some moments of the anime special and cute. As good as X/Y was, I think it sort of missed the mark on the pokemon's personalitation; at least, not on the same level as Best Wishes. But that's just my opinion!
Wanted to first put out I completely agree with this comment here.
So, regarding Best Wishes, (I presume you refer to the whole BW anime) I think a lot of the problems people have with it can be linked to Ash's incompetent nature in the anime. An issue I have with this is it's not all the time or nearly as often as presumed. For example, you have Elesa and the
Cough Roxie battles that I definitely have beef with, but you also have battles like Clay and even the first gym battle that had some smart moments in it. I suppose it's my own thoughts that peeps were expecting ash to suddenly have all the ability that he had with his older mons with these newer ones in a newer region, which doesn't make sense considering the history of every time he goes to a new region he doesn't instantly do amazing and whatnot, and I can even admit that Roxie's mons could have at the very least been really strong and built-in ability since taking on trainers with half compared to them is the "standard" for her.
Another thing I liked was some of the tournament arcs. Now while the league did have some flaws and stuff and the battle against Trip was a little...XYish with how quickly Serperior went down in one hit, I have to say there were some interesting fights. I liked the one where ash fought in the tournament where his scraggy learned focus blast just to miss and I think that was a neat little "gotcha" moment. Now, another thing about that same tournament was at the end him choosing pikachu instead of a better choice but we know that Ash tends to choose the pokemon that's more pumped up on a more consistent basis then the smart choice. Sometimes yes, but this wasn't one of those times.
Another thing I liked was the development Iris got. Now considering how a lot of peeps were turned off by her "Your such a little kid" gig with Ash, she kind of got some really good developement. Like first making amends with her Excadrill, worried about things regarding Drayden, and her trying to get Dragonite on her side something that even Ash gave her advice on with his own experiences (plus BW let us see Charizard again so that in of itself is a win)
Cilan...just....just Cilan. He was a treat and while his over the top mannerisms could be a little repetitive, he also has similar traits to brock but rocking in a different style. Not to mention, he also to draw inspiration from things and is definitely the most helpful of the group. A bit of the reason why there was a bit of filler, but eh.
Now one of my favorite parts. It should be amazing that Ash has some of the most mons he's ever had in a series and yet all seem to have very distinct personalities, characters, and struggles. There were some not as utilized much that I would have rather had (Boldore, Palpitoad) some that weren't really struggling in some aspects but had moments (Unfezant, levanny) but those are easily made up by the others. Like where do I begin?
Tepig - abandoned by his trainer in arguably a bad way. Ash and him bonding was probably what made me really like the little guy and seeing the effort to helping ash and then getting back at that trainer in the battle was really awesome
Snivy - While is a sassy character and that's why everyone likes her, I've noticed there's a bigger depth to her. She clearly is looking out for the group and does try to help in ways she can just doesn't want to look to overly caring.
Scraggy - a baby and practically the symptoms of one. Considering he doesn't hesitated to headbutt whatever he wants is really funny along with his curious and playful nature.
Oshawott - what more can we say? He's the marshtomp of this season while also sporting styling points.
Krookodile - rival turned ally. I really liked how he became integrated into the show with his introduction and how he took a liking to the black glasses stuff. I also enjoyed the final fight he had before joining ash and you could see the frustration he was having and how great it was to see him win the fight for ash at Bryson's gym and even win against Iris's dragonite.
I'd go into the other mons by the other two, but this is already long enough and I still have things to cover.
The cameos and rocket being competent were plus-ups for me. While the plot was rather retconned sadly, what they did give us regarding Plasma I didn't despise. I thought it was okay even if I didn't get my Zekrom boy! But honestly, the best thing about BW to me was probably how well it flowed with its characters. You had rivals for Iris, Cilan, and Ash, you had reacurrances you had characters that did more than just being one plot stuff, I mean one won the league with an Eevee team after all. I just like how much they utilized things and character better along with the amount of mons used and the diversity was something I honestly liked a lot about the DP anime and definetly hold it to it here.
While yeah, it's flawed and I have issues with parts I can safely say that this is my favorite of the pokemon anime. (Though a close Hoenn from behind)
