    With all the American's in poverty, going to bed without food, no homes, no jobs they apparently have "no money" to help these people but we have all the money in the world to help Haiti.

    Get what I'm saying? I know I'm only a "kid" but my dad was talking about this yesturday. And it's true.

    I believe Haiti has been under the supervision of the United Nations for years now. It probably says somewhere in the policy that the UN must help a country because of a national disaster.

    Yeah, I'm probably going to have my ass handed to me in a breadbasket for saying this (OMGZ UR SO SELFISH N ANYWAY THE HOMELESS PEOPLE SHOULD JUST LIEK GET A JOB OR SOMETHIN COZ ITS THAT EASY U GUIZ), but I agree with you.

    I'm in the UK, and the number of homeless people in the larger cities who got absolutely no help throughout the winter is appalling, the NHS is going down the toilet thanks to poor funding, and the less said about the state of our education system the better, but hey you guys we have enough money to help Haiti so why not. Even my university keeps e-mailing me to ask me to donate and has those Help Hiati adds plastered all over our main website. (I would, but I already donate to three different animal charities so I really cannot afford to). It's all over YouTube, Google, the news, the radio...it's very sad that so many people have died, but I don't see people getting this upset about our own poor and undernourished. It seems we are completely capable of ignoring them whilst shelling out millions of pounds to a country we otherwise wouldn't have blinked at twice. If the event itself weren't so horrific and sad, I'd call us all a little pathetic. :/

    Logic is not something our great leaders understand... unsurprisingly since the rise of femenism. They're like celebrities, doing these things to improve their image... see that's what hole I believe democracy puts us all in. Long live the queen.

    With out sounding all superior and the like (how people will disagree with me on this) America's problems come down to a lack of a welfare state. For example, in the Us only 46% of the healthcare is funded by the government. In the Uk it is 87%. The Uk have an inequality index of 36. The Us has 41. And they do have the money... its just being spent on shiny new nuclear warheads. The UK do this too. Its absoultely disgraceful that we choose to hurt rather than heal. A few warheads is fare enough in order to deter any other nuclear states (especially unstable regimes in the middle-east as well as imperealistic superpowers like China) but do countries really need this many:

    · USA: 12,070
    · Russia: 28,240
    · UK: 400
    · France: 510
    · China: 425
    · India: 70
    · Pakistan: 15

    And those are the known nuclear devices. It is common knowledge that North Korea, Israel and possibly even Iran have a nuclear arsenal. Why must governments waste so much money on this horrific technology? Nuclear warfare will never take place on a scale grand enough to require so many (M.A.D.) and India alone can wipe out the world population in a matter of hours. If you want your country's social services improved you have to lobby against nuclear weapons.

    Haiti deserves help as it really is one of the poorest countries in the world.
    GDP= $1,201
    Life Expectancy = 61

    Those statistics are from 2007... imagine what it will be like now that its infrastructure and economy have collapsed. Lets put it into perspective:-

    USA

    GDP= $42,859
    Life Expectancy= 78

    UK
    GDP= $33,107
    Life Expectancy= 79

    JAPAN
    GDP=$31,660
    Life Expectancy= 83

    ITALY

    GDP= $28,438
    Life Expectancy= 81

    You see now... If you want any other statistics for proof go here (Gapminder World - warning it takes a while to load if your computer is slow) its where I get mine from. They are very accurate.

    I hope I've added some spice to your salsa.

    People are more willing to donate if they feel emotion for the cause. (for example, Moriarty already posted she donates to 3 animal charities but not human). I guess we're desensitized to homeless issues.

    The money would no doubt do more good in Haiti anyway.

    I also don't see why it is more important to help your own country than another, we are all people, a life is a life no matter what nationality they are.

    NObama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I couldn't agree more. With both the thread creator and the comment I quoted.

    While I'm in no means trying to diminish the seriousness of what happened in Haiti I also wonder why we give so much aid to these foreign nations while allowing our own citizens to live as the people we're giving aid to.

    My tax dollars are going to fund welfare programs and other programs to assist the needy and while I disagree with big government if it's gonna be there and they're gonna tax me gosh darn it I wanna see my money go to work!

    NObama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ah yes, Barack Obama should be blamed for the poverty rate that has been high for years (and under several previous presidents, of course) and for trying to help a country that was already the poorest in the Western Hemisphere and was just destroyed by a major earthquake. =/

    That being said, the point in the OP is certainly valid, but I think the difference is that poverty flies under the radar while a major earthquake is an event that suddenly kills thousands of people and leaves thousands more homeless. That kind of thing tends to pop out at you way more than something that just sort of exists and always has. At least we're helping some.

    Because you can totally be blamed for something that happened before you were in power.

    Correct! People don't realise that these problems have exsisted since Ogg the meagre couldn't find a cave to sleep in. America has had homelessness issues for centuries. If Obama can't totally solve it with just 1 year in power then fair enough.

    I love how Obama says he's gonna do all this great stuff for us, then we end up giving up many things. Health care, for example.

    Now they just need to help all the american's in need of jobs, shelter, ect.

    OFF TOPIC:
    We saw this guy selling T-shirts on the side of the road and the shirt said:

    One
    Bad
    Ass
    Mistake
    America

    I understand there were issues before Obama, I just think he not taking the right steps to fix them. All talk no action.
    I dont think its wrong however to put other people above our selves and help Haiti

    So, making America out of Britain is a mistake? And making an acronym for the Pres. will get him in chains. lolz

    I believe ther're senators and mayors and other people of the law who will take care of the poverty thing which Obama issued? And I think UN is mostly the provider, not US. Sorry, I've no knack about politics and economics.

    I agree. It's stupid that we're like
    "Oh god we have no money to support our citizens ...HAITI NEEDS HELP? SCREW YOU HOMELESS PEOPLE LETS GO SPEND ALL OUR MONEY ON A DIFFERENT COUNTRY DERP"

    Yeah that. I don't see why my family, being not so good on money right now, should pay to save another country that was never even known before the Earthquake.

    I'm not sure if some of you realize, but Haitians (a good majority of them), get paid much less than the average American. There are programs that support the homeless and needy as well, some just refuse it (though this is probably because they are also mentally unstable).

    One has to make do with what they have, from where they were born. But of course that doesn't limit breaking that "barrier". One cannot be selfish all the time.

    But then again, we're comparing two different kinds of aid, one is for literal survival, the other is for a sustained lifestyle...

    Haiti should just be made part of the Dominican as far as I'm concerned, that way the western hemisphere looks better. Personally, I don't care about Haiti all that much. Its a craphole. They had all this money to try and make thier country better, but they didn't. Tough titties. As for not helping out our homeless and such, I blame partisanship on both sides. If they would learn to work together instead of bickering all the time, we might get something done, but I don't believe more welfare programs are the problem. Also, it wasn't Obama's fault, it wasn't Bush's fault, it wasn't anyone's fault but Haiti. Like they say, you don't crap in your own backyard.

    The "homeless" people in the US have government subsidized housing, welfare, and food stamps; that's more than enough to survive off. On the other hand, many of the earthquake victims have none of those things. I think it's a no-brainer where I'll be sending my money. Not to mention there are many "homeless" people who would spend any money they get on booze and drugs; not exactly a good investment, in my opinion.

    Ermm... the money they were given was a combination of loans (with extortionate intrest rates) and bilateral aid (which dosn't properly help the citizens themselves, just the government). It evaporated pretty quickly and now they are in debt like most other 3rd world nations who we didn't give a chance in hell and screwed over.

    It can't united with Dominican Republic for a number of reasons:

    1. Different styles of governement
    2. Different languages
    3. Cultural differences (Like trying to unite El Salvador with Qatar)
    4. They hate each other
    5. Dom. Rep. has enough problenms without worrying about Haiti's.
