What if...?

Ash, love him or hate him he's been the protagonist of the Pokemon Anime ever since the first episode. But what if the creators decided to go down a different route. So my question to you is, would you have preferred the anime to focus on a different protagonist every time the show switched to a new region? Or do you prefer one main character that has been the focus of the show since its inception? For example, Gold could have been the protagonist in Johto, Brendan in Hoenn etc.

    Discuss :)

I do think it would've made some sense to move on from Ash along with Brock and Misty after the end of the original series. It's kind of strange that they've always had him be the main character and instead change supporting characters. With Pikachu being the show's biggest icon, it would be interesting if it was the same Pikachu each season and he is passed on to or finds his way to the next main character.

I honestly don't care either way. Ash and Pikachu are the center of the Anime franchise. Changing characters each generation would have been nice, but then I'd have to get used to a new main character every single time. :| Chronicles at least featured different characters that weren't Ash, so it could have worked...

Since it'd be very much like Pokémon Special if the anime did take that route, I'd probably guess the series would do as the op mentioned, Gold in Johto, Brendan in Hoenn, Lucas in Sinnoh, etc. Shame all the other protagonists basically fuse into Ash's identity. =/

At any rate, yes, I'm neutral. I like it being the same main character, but I also wouldn't mind a cycle of different leads. Maybe if Pokémon Origins becomes more popular and gets more specials, they'll do it with that!

I would greatly have preferred if they had been somewhat realistic in the pokémon anime and changed protagonists in every region. Like the Pokémon Adventures manga did! The older characters still reappear now and then, but they actually age and learn new things or grow into new professions and trainer styles. Sure, some former companions in the current pokémon anime have "grown" and been shown to be successful in contests in other regions and things like that, but they don't actually ever grow.

Having Ash & Pikachu being constant and never ageing or changing very much is a huge key point in why I find it hard to truly enjoy the anime. It's just... not even half realistic. Sure, realism is a strange word to use in the context of pokémon, haha. But even Digimon showed their characters aging. Why, oh why, did they let Ash leave his team behind and travel to Hoenn to "start anew" once upon a time? Before that, all was well, really.

That being said, I still enjoy the anime enough as it is, I guess d: it's cute. But mostly for the pokémon, less so for the characters, sadly.
