Kay this wasn't ~my~ thread idea, but someone suggested me to make it.

So yeah, what do you think the real purpose of the Internet is?

Well, it was designed to help the non-elected branches to communicate data better within itself, and was originally conceived as ARPANET, at least within the US. There was some testing done overseas with it, but, again, it was developed more for military purposes to speed up the rate at which intelligence gathered through espionage got to the necessary people.

Or its purpose is just to help us achieve the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything, and whether or not it is really 42. ;)

I dunno. I can see what it's doing though:

    - Providing a new way of self-expression where we would be otherwise censored
    - Providing a new way of sharing information and acquiring information
    - Providing a new way to have our sub-conscious exploited by subliminal and suggestive material / ads
    - Providing a new way to be creative and to share our creativity / become reknown / want to be famous and a junky like 95% of Hollywood
    - Providing a new way to communicate and stay in touch
    - Providing a new way to survey our actions and use Internet-users as data-collecting lab rats

    S'all I can think of.

I would think that the purpose of the internet in this day and age as a whole would be connections. Connecting with others, or even things in general, seems to be the general purpose of the internet.

Very vague purpose, but it seems to fit, no?

I believe this explains it all...

In all seriousness, the Internet was originally meant as a mass database where scientists could upload and exchange data in record speed. I guess these days, it's more used for marketing, but the communication thing is still what the internet does best.

The internet's main purpose is for transferring data between different computers from different locations.
As the time goes by, the internet's purpose drastically changes and adds up to it's primary purpose like entertainment, information, earning and many more.

In my opinion, I think it's main purpose is to communicate with people. Like family, friends, etc etc.

I can't really think of anything else. :|

The answer to the internet is that same thing as life, the universe, and anything: 42.

Communications, at first it was military, then business and now just everyone.

We'd be lost without it nowadays, if we just woke up one morning without internet it would be anarchy, to much stuff relies on it if you ask me.

The Internet is the stomping ground of trolls globally. It was originally created to harness and limit their expansion, but this intention has failed dismally; for they are now ubiquitous.

the internet is a bridge to millions of computer's and servers
