Mostly, I get pride in defeating my friends, since they beat me most of the time. I still put up a good fight though! >:3
But that's not my main motivation. Pokemon is a meditative thing for me. It's what I use to chill out. Maybe Slowbro isn't the best Pokemon to counter the new offensive thing in the metagame. But you know what? Just seeing him be able to get out there and do his thing is a wonderful feeling.
This. Like exactly. Pokemon battling is a way for me to relax. Sure, I don't battle much, but when I do it's just relaxing yet exciting...if that makes sense...
It totally makes sense and what you and Chronic said and agree on is definitely a lightning rod for motivation.
I like Pokemon. I like that I can vanish into the cartridge of Pokemon Pearl and become the next great Pokemon trainer: Lief. And not worry about anything in my real world or anything at all because for that half hour or hour that I play all that I am is that Trainer.
It's really stupid sounding but Pokemon gives me freedom.
What keeps me training?
My loss record.
