I often name my Pokemon after my favourite television characters or other pop culture figures. For example, my Pearl team right now includes a Misdreavus, Roselia, and Bilbarel, named Willow (BtVS), Cordelia (BtVS/Angel) and Gwen (Torchwood) respectively. I also have a Monferno called Bubbles and a Kadabra named Derren (Brown).

Usually references to an anime or a game. At one point I had a team named entirely after the brush gods of Okami.

Right now, I have a Gengar named Tenebrae, a Jolteon named Tonitrus, and a Dragonite named Ba'ul. Points for someone who knows what they're from. xD

Normally I don´t give my Pokémon Nicknames.
BUT, whan I played Colosseum. I named every Pokémon -ball, like Bubbleball, my Mantine, Psyball, my Meditite, and Milkball, my Miltank^^

And when I beat Diamond, a friend gave me pearl (he didn´t like it, so I got it for free XD), and I named my Pokémon by their english names. The German are, compared to the english ones, ...bad...

    Examples:
    Bidoof - Bidiza
    Piplup - Plinfa
    Turtwig - Chelast
    Purugly - Schnurrgarst

    Sounds pretty stoopyd, right?

I usually give some of my pokemon Metroid-ish names because I love the Metroid games.

My Vaporeon's name is Maridia and as soon as I get a Pokemon that can learn Hyper Beam, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, and Charge Beam, I'm going to name it Samus. :D

Octillery, Clefable, and Dragonite should be able to learn all those moves. Porygon is close, but I don't think it gets Flamethrower.

My Xatu's name is Chozo for reasons that should be obvious. I also have a Metagross named Quadraxis.

Besides that, these are my active Pokemon:

    Arcanine - Schneider
    Bronzong - Panzer
    Gliscor/Yanmega - Jaeger
    Dusknoir - Eidolon
    Tentacruel - Medusa
    Magnezone/Electrode - Voltech
    Togekiss - Egg
    Ninjask - Ninja Egg
    Lugia - Ruhiel
    Groudon - Gorenghast
    Kyogre - Aquamentus

    There are others...

I give my pokemon nicknames that are descriptive, random. Sometimes for mythical beasts or gods. And sometimes Japanese names or their japanese names
    Example:
At the beginning of most pokemon games I catch a bird pokemon to help along the story like Pidgey,Starly,Tailow. Eventually I always name them Aquilla.

I usually choose something common in the names of their whole evolution line, and add a Y to the end. Toxicroak - Croaky, Crobat - Batty, Roserade - Rosy, etc.
