The first pokemon i ever caught when i bought Pokemon Diamond was probably Starly. In every generation i usually caught a Flying Pokemon Type first.

In both diamond and pearl it was starly, at a high enough level he was better than my starter pokemon.

Mine in Diamond were a Shinx nicknamed Zemquick (before I figured out about its speed), and a Starly nicknamed Pidgeon (before I figured out it was based on a Starling) =/.

Piplup. I usally started with the starter first introduced in the anime. Turtwig and Chimchar didn't really get much screentime in the first ep, so I choose Piplup.
As for capturing, a Starly, whom I still have as a Staraptor named Rapture and keep on my party as all time to help with chaining.
