I was thinking somewhere around those lines too alongside the mini games. I remembered vaguely in the advanced arc of the anime there was a Pokemon escape room like maze with "dangerous obstacles" for a months worth of poke blocks or a similar prize. Team rocket was sabotaging Ash, his friends, other competitors, and even the said sabotaging backfired on themselves, despite the fact they stole the prize. Pikachu, like always saved the day and the prize from team rocket. All these examples pre date squid game. But as mentioned by user porykid, squid game, is a commentary on extreme form of capitalism exploiting the poor. I don't know if squid game is more similar to the Jigsaw challenges from Saw "horror competition" franchise then anything, to traumatize and or kill their contestants. This goes off topic though, and now upon closer inspection wouldn't reflect Pokemons values or political movements. It would be interesting if this was the way they decided the new E4 in gen 10, but there is absolutely no problem with how the design team decides the NPCs and their teams. It would be a nightmare if the E4 and champion were designed off real life competitive players and would make the games more inaccessible to new and casual players, I probably wouldn't make the top 1000 or 10000. (I'm being generous with how bad I am, and will probably rank 997861 in an actual Pokemon competition.)
