What's So important about Ho-Oh??

Well, Ash saw Arceus up and personal, so Ho-Oh shouldn't be that special. Maybe Ho-Oh is leading Ash onward towards his next adventure, where he will then improve to one day become Pokemon Champion. It's definitely there to push Ash and his friends to greater lengths on their journey on their dream.

That, or Ash is so lucky that he is able to see Ho-Oh passing by multiple times during his life. If so, then I'd say that he's one lucky kid then.

It used to look as if Ho-oh was an inspiration Pokemon.

Now its just another Pokemon in our list of 649, of which the later ones are much cooler. I honestly think its significance back then was drowned out by so many Pokemon. I recognize its not a good thing, but I don't mind it much so far.

I'm hoping one episode/movie, ho-oh will have a huge part and do something that almost surpasses arceus! Ho-oh does seem to appear when ash makes his desicions, but I want a confrontation with ash and Ho-oh. At least once.

Ho-Oh looks rather magnificent. Even after so many legendary Pokemon have come out, this particular one continues to leave me awestruck every time it appears. There's something enchanting about it. I guess, that is the reason it is so important.

In the games, it's just described as a pokemon that revived the three legendary beasts after Brass Tower burned down. Otherwise, just a fairly powerful fire/flying type. =/

In the anime, I believe it's more or less symbolic of rebirth as it always appears at the start of a new story arc. Pheonix = rebirth...get it? XD

Rebirth is my guess, as seen in the episode where Ash sees Ho-Oh flying to the Hoenn region and that inspired him to continue his journey.

I agree with the idea of rebirth however. Whenever Ash seems to have that motive to recreate his journey all over again, Ho-oh appears. So, it's very likely Ho-oh symbolizes rebirth of a journey in the anime.

Especially since Ho-oh is primarily based from a phoenix. They say in the legend that when a phoenix dies it turns to ashes, and then is reborn from it's own ashes.

What is Ho-Oh's significance to Ash? Is Ho-Oh Ash's father (as some fans have theorized)? This made him laugh even harder. Ho-Oh, he detailed, is just a plot device to get Ash moving (I suppose like the GS Ball) and to show that he is special. Ho-Oh started Ash on his journey and was one of the reasons he went to Hoenn, and it is never seen by anyone. So, Ho-Oh is just a device to show how special our main character is for having seen it three or so times. Nothing more.

That's the exact reason for Ho-Oh.

The "Ash" pun reminds me of the legend in Pokemon The Movie 2000: The Power of One where the dub replaced "exceptional Trainer" to "Ash", IIRC. The "ash" puns are cool and all, but he doesn't seem that special (aside from the fact that he seemingly has prolonged access to the Fountain of Youth and managed to be destined to start out with and befriend a now-abnormally-overpowered Pikachu). He hasn't even completed any regional Dexes yet (in terms of actual captures, not encounters)...

Even weirder, where did the translators get the name "Ash" from? Who names their child that? (excluding lengthened names like Ashton or Ashley) You'd think in the name selection menu that something like John or Mike would appear, but Ash?

Nah, I prefer my heroes have Meaningful Names, if the adventures they're going on turn out to be repetitive in the long term... :) But plain names are fine, too! At least Ash's has a punny one, which strengthens the connection between him and Ho-oh, and partially explains the frequency of his Ho-oh sightings...

Several of the variety of ash trees, from which his name could be derived, are related to Kanto in some way: not only are there trees known as the "red ash", "green ash", and "blue ash", for the first three games, but also the "indigo ash", for the Indigo Plateau.

Yeah...I knew about the Satoshi>Ash (I figured they'd pick some naming starting with "S" or one that shares the meaning of "wisdom"), but it's still a bit weird that the translators managed to pick a sort-of-obscure name that ended up fitting so nicely with Kanto's themes as well. Not to mention it complements the legend of the Phoenix (Ho-Oh, in particular). :)

OK, well not the legendaries, considering that the heroes get into a hissy-fit every time someone tampers with their powers and/or attempts to catch the legendaries. But at least the non-legendaries from one region! Kanto, at least. There are a bunch of times, IIRC, that Ash encounters hordes of a certain Pokemon species and doesn't even make an attempt to catch one. And he could always use the Pokedex to zero in on their locations...but yeah, Ash tends to forget some of the basics of Pokemon, so achieving the "Master" goal is a bit very far off...

I saw an interesting theory somewhere that talked about how Ash would save the world in Pokemon grand finale, and would be given a title like "Guardian of all Pokemon". I really like that idea.
