He may have had the worst development of any main character, but hey at least he had some cute Pokemon - Marill and Venonat.

And I have to give some credit to him having Pokemon that are very helpful for fulfilling his drawing and photography aspirations.

If i had to choose my least favorite, it'd have to be Clemont basically because of his complainign that he does, mainly due to having to run a little. It was funny at first with the nerds/geeks don't like to run bit but now its getting a bit on my nerves :|

but i shall live and continue watching :)

Brock himself was the worst Brock replacement, since DP Brock was bland.

Cilan was the worst. Even tho I never fully watched the Best Wish series but whenever I did check out a episode he was just somewhat annoying. Tracy wasn't that bad and I liked his character and I don't have that much opinion on Clemont yet but from what I've seen from him he seems ok. Haven't watched the XY series yet, only seen a very little bit of it.

Hey; can I just drop in and say that ANY BROCK REPLACEMENT is just terrible?

Like seriously; you cannot beat the level of slapstick that Brock achieves in his never ending pursuit of ladies. BTW; I thought Croagunk was probably the best at "Disarming" Brock...Better than Max, May or Misty ever could. :3

Uh, no? Brock was boring in the anime for over a decade, particularly in DP where he became completely uninteresting. Clemont/Bonnie are a million times more interesting than Brock was, post-Kanto.

Even Johto and Hoenn Brock was not particularly interesting outside the odd episode that focused on him.

Sorry; but I disagree. Nothing touches the comedy brought by early Brock. :3

Cilan was as boring as his basic face. Tracey was the best, but I do love Clement + Bonnie, they have a lot of character and the way they interact together reminds me a bit of Brock but also of May and Max.

I think "terrible" is a really strong word here, especially since the words "good" and "bad" imply objective value, rather than personal preference (in which we would use "like" and "dislike"). From a writing perspective, Clemont is a dynamic character (at least in Pokémon standards) who starts off with plenty of personal flaws, but grows up throughout the series to overcome those flaws. When characters grow and develop like that, it leaves a lasting impact on the story, but maybe that's just me.

I agree that Brock was definitely humorous, but I don't think comedy and (good/bad) objective value should go hand in hand together, unless the Pokémon anime was dedicated purely to comedy.

Nah I think Terrible is the right word for the Brock Replacements

I think it's wrong to see them in the lens of a "Brock replacement". Having said that, I feel like the anime's writers could do better than try to have any of them take over Brock's duties. Both Cilan and Clemont have made themselves responsible for food — and this part feels cloned. (Yes, I'm also suggesting it's the only thing Brock was ultimately good for.)

Brock's excuse for cooking, particularly with providing Pokémon food, was his background as a breeder.

They should probably let the characters independently cook and feed themselves at this point.

I'll give you Ash and May (Ash's first day was one disaster after another, and going by how it went, it's obvious he can't have known how to cook, and as far as May, just look at her Pokeblocks and how the only Pokémon that's even willing to eat them is her Munchlax), but I wouldn't really say Misty doesn't know how to cook, since she did travel a while before settling near Pallet Town where she met Ash in the first episode, and knowing how to cook is an important survival skill (besides, she also cooked up that Salveyo Weed cure, and I'm pretty sure if she were as bad of a cook as Sick Daze implied, she would have had it turn into poison instead). Heck, it's even implied that she may have been the one who cooked back when Ash and her were lost in Viridian Forest, BEFORE Brock joined the party (and bear in mind, Showdown in Pewter City implied they had arrived at Pewter City just barely two weeks after Ash left on his journey, and we know he arrived in Viridian in less than a day, meaning they had to have been in Viridian Forest for at most 13 days.

But yeah, I agree, the cooking was pretty much the only reason he was present (certainly it was the only reason in AG. The Original series for both Kanto and Johto had an excuse regarding wanting to be a breeder and his wanting to take his mind off the heartbreak regarding Ivy besides cooking. It's still more of a reason than why he was in DP, though).

I may be a little annoying (which I know is brave, seeing it's my first post here), but I don't consider any Brock replacement worst then Brock himself. Brock is definitely my least favourite Pokémon Anime character. His womaniser joke was annoying from the very start and definitely uncalled for in children show. He had little to no character development and the same goes for his Pokémon too (to these days I consider the worst thing writers did was giving Brock Mudkip, a Hoenn starter, which thanks to this, got no proper screen time and character development). He was simply just there, feeding the others and (in OS) preventing Ash and Misty to kill each other. And then, when they decided they want to finally get rid of him, they will, once again, come with Brock, who spent five sagas bragging about how he wants to be the best breeder, miraculously turning into Pokémon Doctor wannabe. That was bad end for bad character.

As for his replacements, Tracey was OK. He too had little to none character development, but that is actually quite acceptable, considering his short time as main character. He was quite competent and he could help a lot. But his leave from main cast was also quite out of character, as he was shown to love traveling and exploring new places, only to end being locked in Oak's lab. Yes Pokémon Anime writers did that more time after that (Dawn's Ambipom anyone?), but Tracey's was actually first, so it somehow stuck in me.

Cilan, well, he was actually what Brock was in OS, coocking, taking care of Pokémon and preventing Ash and Iris to kill each others. He also got no real character development and neither did his Pokémon. What put him little above Brock IMO is that he has no inappropriate and annoying habit similar to Brock's girl hunting. But, to be honest, the writers tried too hard to get the show back to its roots with Ash being one incompetent main character (who even started to do rookie mistakes, something we did not really see since AG) and two sidekicks, that it started to get old really quick. Hence the whole Unova and Decolora are actually quite forgetable sagas, prety much like Johto was.

Clemont... well, yes, he is coock and Gym Leader, but he is fighter and has a lot of character development. Hence I am not sure if he really fits the definition of Brock replacement. For me, Bonnie more fits that definition in XY, by taking care of others Pokémon and being annoying with her marriage propositions for her brother. But even she has some character development and I hope she will have more in XY&Z. Serena is the one I worry most now, but that's for another debate.
