Dive, Surf, Whirlpool, Waterfall. Why are there so many water Hm's? Why don't other types have any hm's except for rock smash and fly? (both of which aren't very useful in battle)

I guess it's because of the number of natural occurrences on water, like waterfalls or whirlpools, in comparison to elsewhere which can't be handled by existing HMs. When you think about it there are a lot of Normal ones, too; Cut, Strength and Rock Climb. Not quite as many, but yeah.

I can't think of many land-based things which can't be dealt with by existing non-Water HMs, so that just left the water-based things really.

Well if pokemon earth is anything like ours water will be vastly more abundant then ground meaning their are more uses for Water based HMs since there is more occurrences of water to deal with.

Cause there are more water than earth, plus there are more water ocurrences than earth's. ^^

cause majority of earth is made of water

Better Question: Why are there still HMs? Why can't we have items to do it instead... HM Slaves are annoying...

Bleh the water hm's kinda annoy me

What I think happened is this

2nd gen games came out, they wanted everything improved upon, they wanted more hm's and usable tm's therefore we were given waterfall and whirlpool, maybe because cut takes care of all branch likes objects, and there were already enough rock like obstacles

Then we got to 3rd gen, running out of ideas, but still need to keep every new version fresh, so once again another hm that was waterbased, dive

At least HM's aren't really needed that much in 5th gen bleh

There is more water obstacles in the game than other obstacles.

Because you need those HM's to go through the game . Waterfall , Surf , Whirlpool and even Dive is a necessity in every pokemon game

I'd say because at some time in ANY game you need to cross some form of water I mean every Region has quite alot of water.

Because there's a lot of water to cross, and lots of ways to interact with the water.

because water requires special skills to move on :D

It should just be only TMs now. The only point of having HMs was that you could use them as many times as you wanted, and now you can do that with TMs.

Anyway, they could make obstacles that an HM of any type would be required to traverse:
Fire - "surfing" across lava/magma pits
    Rock - same
Poison - "surfing" across acid pits
    Steel - traversing magnetized walls
    Electric - same
Ice - walking across frozen floors without just sliding across? Not sure
Grass - walking across dangerous plants like poison ivy or something
Bug - using spiderwebs to traverse obstacles (assuming Marvel Comics doesn't sue)
Ghost - becoming invisible/unseen by dangerous Ghost Pokemon
Ground - technically, Dig is a TM. Um, walking across highly electrified places? Can't think of a good one
Dark - similar to the Ghost one, but in a more physical sense
    Psychic - time-traveling or dimension-traveling
Dragon - rolling through round chasms inside a dragon's egg? Being allowed to pass by powerful Dragon Pokemon? Kind of lame, but all I can think of
??? - traversing nothingness? Avoiding "curses?"
Bird - Sends an automated response to Game Freak that your game has been hacked

Pretty much what was stated above, majority of the Earth is made of water and you can't really think of anymore "obstacles" for the other types.

I didn't mean to start a conversation regarding how much of the planet is covered in water.. I get that.
But I was thinking about why Cut isn't Grass or Flying type or something. Rock climb could actually be Rock type. Strength could be Fighting type. Less important would be Flash being Electric.
But yeah, I like the idea of a lava surf or a ghost or dark type "repel" style move.

Because you travel the most on water through the game, and unlike flying, you have to cross obstacles like waterfalls and whirlpools.
