In my humble opinion, Gen 3 did stand out really well, and therefore, became my most favorite in the series. I really don't get why Gen 3 got so much criticism.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! The spoiler below this message will show many criticism about Second Generation. If you have fond memories with it and THINK it will offend you, don't read this spoiler. I'm giving the Gen 2 fanboys who BASH Gen 3 a piece of my mind.
Ruby and Sapphire feels more like the original than a sequel. They got everything right with the HMs, Berry mechanics (which originated in Gold and Silver, but those look bland and unoriginal), and Trainer Rematches (that too originated in Gold and Silver, but that was bloody monotonous SINCE you have to call the trainers for the Rematch. You don't have to call the trainer in order to rematch in Ruby and Sapphire (Not sure about Emerald. Someone please enlighten me about the trainer rematch in Emerald) which saves you the headache of having to level grind/money farm). All in all, Ruby and Sapphire is my most favorite of the series (next to Red, Green, and Blue, but if it has to be the version of my own, then that proves my point since Nintendo of America screwed it up by calling it "Red and Blue" and leaving Green out.)
Generation 4 (Platinum was the only version in Gen 4 I played besides the remakes) isn't as good as Ruby and Sapphire, and Black and White almost surpassed it but didn't since that name kept my (and everyone else's) hopes up too high.

Spoiler:
No Kanto? I mean come on, guys! Kanto got disappointing in Gold and Silver (Fixed in the remake), which IS why second generation is my least favorite of the series. Thank goodness it's not in Ruby and Sapphire, because otherwise, Ruby and Sapphire would have fallen in the same category as Gold and Silver. That's why there's Fire Red and Leaf Green. The only version I have beaten (involves defeating Red) has to be Gold Version. Gold Version was the only Generation 2 main stream game I've beaten because it went downhill after defeating the Elite Four. Kanto was the biggest flaw I have with Gold and Silver.
Gen 3 Pokemon are horrible? LOLNO! Unlike Generation 2, most Pokemon look cool and have good potential. Sure, there are no evolutions and there are only prevolutions of 2 second generation Pokemon families, but that doesn't MEAN that Gen 3 Pokemon are flawed. It's to make way for the new regions. It has some of my favorite Pokemon, such as Blaziken, Absol, Gardevoir, Milotic, Groudon, etc.. Most Pokemon in Generation 2 on the other hand, are not as good as Generations 1 and 3 when it comes to concepts.
Hoenn is the worst area ever? *Dr. Robotnik voice* NO! Hoenn isn't as bland as Johto is. Team Rocket were more pathetic in Gen 2 than they were in Gen 1. They tried to get Giovanni to lead again, but failed miserably.
There are other things I should give Gold and Silver credit for. The legendary Duo, known as Ho-oh and Lugia, are rather unique. The Rival was pathetic at first since you are allowed to have your starter above level 5, but later on, unlike Ruby and Sapphire, he becomes stronger. Therefore, your rival is also unique, while your main rival in RS is pathetic since he/she doesn't have a fully evolved starter Pokemon (that should be fixed in the Remake.)
Overall! Generation II did NOT stand out as good as Generation I at all IMHO. It was my favorite as a kid, but if it weren't for Kanto NOT being as good as it is in Gen I, it would have been.
For anyone out there who gets offended by a way I treat the second generation, and to those of you who dislike third generation (including those who bash it) AND assume that I say "Pokemon Gold and Silver sucks!", Let THIS be the case of my argument. Gold, Silver, and Crystal are my least favorite of the series, PERIOD!
