  • WHY POKEMON IS NOT EVIL

I have recently been searching and finding SO many people who think Pokemon is evil. Now, I understand that people CAN get VERY obsessed with it (I was there once), but it's evil just depends on HOW obsessed you are.

For example, say this kid comes home and all he talks about is Pokemon. Then say he watches it on TV and it just so happens that a Spirtitomb or a Channeler is on the show or something. Next this kid ends up thinking ghosts are all cool and tries for HOURS to communicate with them like the Channerlers do. Eventually this kid becomes totally evil, etc.

Thats one example of something I've read.
When I was about 6 years old, I was in church and they told this story about the evils of Pokemon.

"Once, there was a little boy who LOVED Pokemon. he had all the wallpapers, all the trading cards, the games, the stuffed Pokemon, the action figures, and even an Ash hat. He'd wear it to school everyday thinking he was all cool. But then one night, as he was trying to go to sleep, he thought that his giant stuffed Pikachu, which he kept in the corner of the room, was making faces!! The kid walked over to it, and Pikachu WAS making faces! Its expression changed from happy to sad to angry to its regular expression again. At first the boy didn't tell his mother, because he thought it would be cool to have a real live Pokemon! But then the Pikachu got up and started walking, and the kid could see the shadows of 'evil angels' moving across his wall. The kid decided to tell his parents, who supposedly 'witnessed' everything and decided that Pokemon was evil.
That night, Jesus came to the boy in a dream, giving him a vision of a fire. He told the little boy that he had to BURN all of his Pokemon items. Until this was done, the evil would stay, and get worse.
The next morning, the boy told his mother of the dream, and she agreed that all of his Pokemon stuff should be burned. So the kid burned all of his Pokemon stuff and the evil left his room, never to return.

Now what kind of person makes up that stuff just to scare little kids out of Pokemon? Do YOU believe that story? I don't. I have friends who used to be major fans, and now almost FEAR it because of that fictional story which they believe to be true. I've read about people burning their cards, their Pokemon and pokeballs, and one even took a hammer to her gameboy because she thought that her Pokemon game was EVIL!!!!

I know this article is about why Pokemon is NOT evil, but I'm saying that people only focus on the Dark Side of Pokemon. (For you newb fans, I'm NOT saying that Pokemon has anything to do with Darth Vader) Do you ever see people write articles about why Pokemon is Good and Not evil? (Maybe thats why I'm writing this article, IDK)

Through Pokemon, kids make friends because there are SO MANY Pokefans out there. They share interests and may get to know each other, starting with Pokemon games and cards.
Pokemon sparks imagination. Its a way for kids to get outside and play, even if they ARE just playing Pokemon Master or Catch em' all.
Pokemon ignites emotion. It can make you happy when you're sad, through the Pokemon's antics, and when one of the main heroes has a great victory.
It can make you think. Pokemon teaches strategy and in the games, there are sequences you must follow and several items you must get before you progress any further. (Surf, fly, rock smash, cut, strength, etc)
Pokemon can help you learn. If you're into it enough, you'd be willing to do the learning books that Pokemon has provided for learning. ( When I was younger, I got better at math because I wanted to 'help' the characters by solving the math problems. Plus, in Pokemon Diamond version, you must do math to get through Fantina's gym. There are also books to help young kids with reading.
Pokemon boosts self esteem. I've seen people say that the 'Pokemon Master' line is like boasting and trying to be on top of everybody, but I see it as a line that boosts confidence, and like Ash, just believing that you CAN do good in life, and that you CAN do great things if you believe in yourself. For me, just knowing this makes me feel better.
Pokemon is fun. Kids can have lots of fun with Pokemon, because as I've said, it sparks the imagination, leading to many new games and ideas.

There are WAY more things out there that are more evil than Pokemon. Pokemon (in America) does not show any nudity, no sexual content, and no bad language. I know some of you anime fans reading this probably LIKE Porn, but I'm just saying that Pokemon is not evil because it has none of this stuff.
Pokemon brings back wonderful memories, and its funny. The art is good, and Pokemon is an innocent show that hardly has any reference to anything evil. Compared to all the shows we're watching now, (like Hellsing... CHRIS) Pokemon is really good.

If any of you have questions, ideas, or comments, please reply!

  • Pokémon is considered evil because it uses evolution. And we all know what that is. I'm an Atheist myself, and I really don't care about that stuff. I just want to live and enjoy life :P

Personally, I think these extremists have serious problems. Just leave them, they'll soon get over it and realise what mistake they've made, their just stupid people. :P

  • Pokemon IS evil. It has Marowak-killing Team Rocket :O

Honestly, a lot of people recently (or it has been brought up a lot recently...either one :\) have been whining about how evil Pokemon is. Honestly, I fail to see how :\ I mean sure, some things like Ghost and Dark pokemon and evil teams trying to conquer the world, but still, it isn't that evil, is it? :\ I also read somewhere that they say Pokemon is evil because its about 'battling' and the more 'powerful' Pokemon wins. I say this is stupid...why? Really, a Magikarp with 999 in everything with only Splash, is going to beat, say a Electivire with 700 in everything. The Magikarp IS stronger, but not neccesarily better. It is also about tactics, and I fail to see why everyone see's it as 'The More Powerful Monster Wins!!!111' :\
Sure, there are Dark types, but I feel this doesn't neccesarily make Pokemon evil. Heck, there are Ghost types, but at the end of the day, they were not made to bring up debate on if Pokemon is evil or not (heck, I haven't even heard anything being brought up on dark and ghost types yet, but knowing most people it will be brought up...:\ The only thing I agree Nintendo/Game Freak did wrong was introduce a God Pokemon, but I think people need to understand: this is all set in th Pokemon world, not our world. I honestly dont see how a innocent Pikachu can corrupt people, and I'd love to be proven wrong :D

Also, the Pikachu story...honestly, Pokemon being evil angels? O_o I think it's just adults cant accept the fact that children easily get addicted to Pokemon and say, dont go outside less often or forget the homework. So, they pick out any little thing they can find and start a big debate on it. I have been playing pokemon for years, and I have never turned evil or nothing. So, why would anyone else? :\

  • LOL The world and the people get more and more stupid as the years go on..
Funny how it's EVIL to assume Evolution in a video game is evil yet when we start to question the '7 days earth was made and humans tripe' we get struck down :\

I say, Pokemon should be a religion ;D, that'd be awesome.
anyone want to write some stories? slap it in a book and spread the word :)

    ;)

  • I don't get it, how is evolution evil?
    Sorry, I'm so ignorant. Dx

I never thought Pokemon was evil, and I'm not evil...most of the time..*whistles*
But my "evilness" isn't influenced by Pokemon, honestly, Pokemon's pretty safe and ethical.
Well, in the special manga, there's violence and killing and death threats (lul), but it's not at all really graphic.

Because some people don't think that evolution exists, and think that portraying it vaguely in a video game with fictional creatures is going to poison the mind of youth across the world!

because Fundies don't believe in it, therefore it should BURN IN HELL!

but, yes, some people go over the top with pokemon. When I was about seven, there was a massive ban on pokemon items at our school (trading cards being played during break, etc.). The thing is, this was actually brought in to protect the pokemon stuff - some crazy people in the top year had got it into their head that pokemon was evil and started stealing anything related to it and ripping/smashing/burning it. NOT cool. :\

  • Wow.
    Who would believe that.

The same people who burn fictional fantasy books like Harry Potter because it contains "evul witchcraft!!11", and the same people who boycott a movie that was based on a book just because a self-proclaimed atheist wrote it, even though the book is based in a complete fantasy world which is obviously fictional.

This stuff has been happening forever, and it really gives all Christians (and pretty much any organized religion) a bad name. All of the extremists seem to think that reading, playing or watching fictional books/video games/movies will somehow make people lose their faith and will make them join satanic cults. It's just a ridiculous fear mentality that has been happening for thousands of years, but now at least people have the sense to realize that it is completely untrue propaganda. I had to go to a high school filled with nut cases like this, and all these people did was spread untrue facts about subjects with no proof and cause a huge hissy fit if a movie like The Golden Compass came out. -_-

Argh my brain is spinning. D8
    Ah well...
I personally don't think Pokemon has any bad influence whatsoever. There are evil organizations like Team Rocket, etc. but they're not influencing small children...are they? 0___o

  • When I first heard that extremist Christians found Pokémon to be evil, I laughed my freaking head off. To me, it's hilarious how a group of people who are overzealously devoted to their religion can take something as insignificant to their adult lives as a cartoon/video game series and completely blow it out of proportion, claiming everything from "it's in league with Satan" to "it lost my family money due to a demonic influence." As an atheist, I wholesomely respect religion and its teachings of morality, but it sounds more as if fundamentals pull this logic straight out of their asses.

If Pokémon is so "evil," then why did Pope John Paul II endorse its teachings of lifelong lessons and important ideas such as responsibility and self-esteem? Then again, it is mostly fundamental Protestant groups which are making these events public and usually have a tendency to say "Screw the Pope" due to the differences in opinion between Catholics and Protestants.

But are issues such as these even new? I can remember religious groups claiming Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, the Internet, Bill Clinton, heavy metal, Super Mario Brothers, and cable television programming to be associated with a satanic influence. Even back when the railroad was first introduced to America, religious groups were claiming this to be satanic and evil (of course, this was started by the canal runners who wanted to keep their jobs). In short: old news.

Hey i'm an atheist too! hi5! Anyway, if you're saying that pokemon is considered evil, it is just a religious perception. Most religious people believe that the world was created by their god, therefore, they believe that anything related with the theory of evolution like charles darwin's, is false and evil (wth)... That is why, when pokemon used the theory of evolution, this becomes the centre of attraction for criticism for most religious people. These religious people don't apply to atheist, agnostics, nor freethinkers.

HEY I'M NOT TRYING TO MOCK THE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE HERE, IT IS JUST WHAT I LEARNED FROM CHAPEL AS MY SCHOOL FORCE ME TO ATTEND CHAPEL EVEN THOUGH I DON'T WANT TO.

Thanks for putting up this thread anyway, i've been trying to pitch this idea to everyone but very few people replied. The best website to get rid of religious prejudice on pokemon is https://www.kimsites.net/pokemon/index.html.

    Cheers.

Not all protestants think that way, though. I'm somewhat religious, and even though I don't believe in evolution, I love Pokemon. I have heard plenty of people say that it is evil, and I'm really getting tired of it. There are so many people who put so much effort into hating something, it's just plain ridiculous. There is one phrase used on many Linux web sites that I think sums it up well:
FUD - Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
People tend to fear things that they do not understand. They do not like to give anything that they disagree with a chance. I have seen many things similar to this everywhere, not just for TV shows. We are just going to have to get used to it, unless they decided to start listening.

  • I think I've looked away from this discussion for long enough! (But before I join in the controversy, I just have to say that the story about the satanic Pikachu? Well, the one at the church, telling the story, sure seemed to know a lot about the specifics of Pokemon to be completely against it to such a level.)

Well I definitely don't believe that Pokemon is driven by any evil forces. It may seem to have influences of topics that are usually up for discussion between different cultural groups, but my only gripe is that people are trying to change the viewpoints of others. The way I see it, no one needs to be taught how to live by anyone else. If there's real danger out there, it should be up to you to experience it, and learn from it. If you don't want to be associated with pokemon due to evil forces, don't let it be just because someone else told you to.

If you're going to make a life choice, don't make it by anyone else's judgement but your own.

That is my statement, and even if it may seem a little vague for the current issue, I think it actually holds true as a universal rule of thumb. If more people realized this, then I think they could do a lot more useful things with their time instead of beating a dead horse.

That is what I have to say, and I hope that I never have to join anymore discussions of controversy in my lifetime.

(Also, to avoid any possible paradoxes, I'm not directly telling all of you that you have to think for yourselves. I'm just saying that you should keep it in mind whenever you make decisions, because if you're going to do something, it only really matters if you're doing it for you.)
