Why would anyone disable Reputation?

To discourage idiots from negative reping me. We all know, that 90% of the negative reputation we get are from idiots who don't understand the concept of an opinion, or they misread your post and basically repeat exactly what you said in the reason..

Example:

I just got one (I know from who too) that took away over 50 reputation points from me (see why I know? Also, they talked exactly like they do in their posts) but that doesn't make me mad because they had a reason. < Not idiot

But I got one that says "Don't blame the moderators!" for a post saying "It isn't the staffs' fault.." < Idiot

I believe that the people who disable their reputation are members who may not agree with the community's understanding of them and/or don't want to be judged by their reputation 'level'. Reputation can help being a factor to distinguish between a 'good' and 'bad' member but when a so-called 'bad' member is willing to reform it's still problematic to get rid of the many red buttons built up from less mature past actions.

I keep mine on because, frankly, if you judge people by little green bars, you are a complete idiot, and your opinion is meaningless.

Because of rep abuse and the overrating of reputation.

Though I keep mine on. No idea why though.

Although mine isn't disabled, I can understand completely why you would disable it.

Some people just can't be bothered with it. I just leave it on because I like people to see mine, but if it got disabled, I wouldn't care either.

I joined the forum some three years ago when reputation was disabled, so the question as far as I'm concerned is 'why would I bother to enable it?'.

If someone is seriously bothered about a post of mine they'd see fit to PM me, as I would them.
It's easy, anyway, to judge whether someone's an asshat or not by observing their posts when one happens across them.

there was a time when some people completely misunderstood one of my posts, and I got like, 3 neg rep points for it. despite having quite a few rep points anyway, my rep is still red. because of this, I disabled my rep until it could go back up since if my rep was bad, people would probably trust me less.
like I said, when my rep goes back up into green, it will be enabled again.

I disabled reputation loooong ago. I really don't care for it, or about it. It's not like reputation is the main reason I come on PC anyway. :/
Same. I don't give a rat's behind about it. Even though I haven't been -rep'd but once (and only because that person didn't apparently read the post well enough), and I've been +rep'd a number of times, I stilll don't care enough to want to bother displaying it.

I disabled mine because the green bars don't match my themes.
Haha, that's awesome. X3

I guess they don't go with mine, either, lol.

I do get negative reps once in a while from people who misinterpret my messages. As such, I shall misinterpret their negative rep. I couldn't be bothered to disable it.

So you're saying that you're ashamed to let people see your rep bars if its red but you're happy to show them off if they're green?
New name for rep bars = Bias Bars.

I disabled it because I don't care how high or how low it is. People shouldn't judge another by the little green/red blips that appear under one's join date, location, age, nature, posts, etc. They should judge the person by how they act overall. After all, they don't know the person, and, if you ask me, judging a person by how much rep they have is like judging a person based on what they're wearing. It's stupid.

Because reputation is one big popularity contest. Each post should be judged on its own regardless of who made it or how many little green bars the poster has under their join date. If you can't look beyond that, I don't see why I should care about your opinion in the first place. There's also the fact that people can give reputation for completely moronic reasons. I'm not going to dismiss somebody's post just because they have negative rep or praise a mediocre post just because the person who posted it happens to be popular and neither should anyone who wants to be taken seriously. The content of each individual post is what matters, not how popular the member making the post is.

That said, I believe reputation as a concept serves no practical purpose in a community where the intention is to have an honest discussion rather than competing for popularity.

no..? that's not what I'm saying at all. it doesn't show that I'm biassed.

The only time I'm really bothered by negative reps is when I know I've done/said something stupid. I would not care at all if the Admins decided to take away reputation, as I'm sure that would be a relief for many people.

However, if the reputation system does serve any purpose, at least people might think a little bit before they make foolish posts.

i dont really care about reputation, i have only ever received 3 comments, and one of them was from someone who had misinterpreted my post. I was on about looks! The thing that bothers me though is that if someone has commented, you usually dont have the opportunity to present your case to them in the event they have misinterpreted.
