Will we be out of touch when we're old?

    Do you think we will be out of touch when we're old, similar to how our grandparents and parents may feel now? We have all this new technology, from 3D TVs, iPods, the internet, and crazy new ways to play video games like the Wii. Since we have had access to the internet all our lives and can collect massive amounts of information on it, is it possible for us to be out of the loop with technology, like our grandparents and parents who were born without this technology? Or will our children and grandchildren find new ways to confuse the old people of their time?

    I think we'll be able to handle new technology, since we've grown up with ever-changing things coming out and our society is so consumer-orientated that we'll probably keep buying new technology since it'll be the thing that's "in". Everyone rushes to get the iPhone or new game consoles, so I think that sort of mentality in our society to have the new, cool thing will keep us up-to-date with our children.
     
    Well i recon at one point most of us will be out of the loop for a second, with the way things are moving forward now i wouldn't be surprised if we fell out now :P. but at the point where we are classed as OAP's do you really think you can be bothered to stay in the loop? i can safely say that with my current outlook on life (lazy) i will fall out of the loop within the next 20-30 years.
     
    I'm not really a guy who shares the NOW mentality of our current generation (probably because I don't have money). This is because I believe in a simple way of life and I am more of an outdoors guy. I think we will become out of touch. I'm not even in touch with the popular teen whatnot.

    I'm not even in touch now, in 40 years I'll be even worse...if that's possible.

    I'm a girl...and I don't watch or read Twilight, how's that for out of touch? :P
     
    I think we'll loose interest maybe? We'll grow older, more mature, responsible etc.
    We'll eventually come out of line, and it eventually becomes the run of our children. But video consoles, I can imagine myself playing even after 20-30 years XD
    Well it might depend on the type of person you are. I'd want to stay in touch with the things that are "in" to our children. But being old means being old. You generally do things that everyone does when they're old and a parent.
    So much for video games and the internet and pokemon.
     
    I don't think we'll be. We're the generation that always has to have the latest thing, so I think we're going to be just fine. I'm going to try as hard as I can to keep up with my kids and grandkids because I know having grandparents who are out of touch can get annoying.
     
    I agree with you, Klippy. Growing up in this fast paced society, I don't see how we can get out of touch. We're always looking for the best new thing, so I don't see that changing. However, I'm sure there will always be the people that can't keep up, and the people that'll be like "when I was your age, we had..." But overall, I think we can be hip and jiggy with it, yo.

    I think it depends on the individual. I mean, my parents are good with technology (my mums job is running her online business). And my grandparents atleast have facebook. Though others their age, don't know how to turn a computer on. So it will just depend if that person keeps up or not (or learns later on in life, life my grandfather).

    Don't worry, its hard for us who have. You hate it or love it. And then somebody on the opposite side always wants to argue about it. (thats why i keep my fandom on the down low, and don't throw bricks at people who dislike it. I wasn't brought up to be violent xD )

    No. I don't think we'll ever be out of touch. Physical contact is different than just emotional contact.
    Though I do believe more hermits will begin popping up here and there.. Like those weird shut-in otakus..


    ... When I was your age.. there were only 150 pokemon!!
     
    There are a ton of Facebook groups for the "When I was your age..." stuff. Including having 150 Pokemon.
     
    As others have said; with today's already fast moving technology, we're having to upgrade every year or so anyway just to keep things running. I think that most people will probably just keep along this trend and keep up with today's technology.

    I started with a second-hand SNES, now I have a Wii and I'm coping at the moment, so why shouldn't I when I'm 40 and the Z-Sphere 1080 comes out.

    Mind you, my Mum is still convinced that video games is just a phase that society will grow out of in the next decade or so...

    Because the Z-Sphere 1080 will not be marketed to 40 year olds. It will be marketed to children and teenagers, and you will not buy it because you will feel that you are not part of the target audience.

    That is the reason why the old people of today haven't kept up with technology. It is because all the latest technology is always marketed to younger people.

    It's a gradual process. We think now that we won't keep up with the newest tech, but for most of us it is an eventual reorganization of priorities. But for a tech enthusiast uses the latest techs for their studies or profession you won't be as out of touch as you think.
     
    In terms of whats popular (e.g: Music and Games), I'm already out of touch, which in a way is brilliant, as the charts at the moment are about as talented as I am at making funny metaphors. I'd like to highlight Justin Bieber, Dizzee Rascal and Jason Derulo as specific examples of a general lack of talent and use of chart fodder lyrics. As for games, I don't care for this Call of Duty everyones going on about. Give me Crackdown, Sonic, Mario and Final Fantasy... maybe Metal Gear, but thats going down the pan recently...

    When I'm older, I'm going to stick with what I like instead of following fashions, same as I do now. But as for technology, I'd certainly try to stay near the top of the loop, but I would only bother with things that I think would make a difference. For example, that TV that adds Yellow to RGB, the advert proves it makes absolutely NO difference. Call it 'Yellow-ish' all you like Takei, but it is quite a vivid yellow. If it's in my mind or not, IT LOOKS YELLOW!!!

    In my case, no. I'll be a very cool grandpa that will play ps21, 9DS and xbox7200 with my grandsons and grandaughters. But it depends from person to person. My grandmother uses text messages and 'LOL'! :D
     
    i used to tell myself i would never be out of style and i would always manage to adjust to ever progressing technology, but as time passes i'm growing more and more apathetic about the world around me. i've lost interest in what's "in" and i feel like every time i go to an electronics store i see some crazy new device (have you seen those fans without the blades @~@) but i'm so used to the things i grew up with i don't want to bother with exploring new things anymore, so i'm starting to see where adults are coming from. i'm sure i'll be just as lame and technologically incapable as my mom by the time i'm her age.
     
    Nah, I'm a pro at technology. Though I'll fail at it, I'll still understand it and stuff. If not then I'll just bore my grandchildren with Xbox 360's and PS3's while they're playing their UltimateBoy20900.
