Though we expected, or rather hoped; for Windows XP SP3 late last month it seems that it may arrive before May. According to an "internal schedule" obtained over at Engadget, OEMs, volume license, Connect, MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have access to the update on April 21st, while everyone else won't notice it until April 29th when it hits the Microsoft / Windows Update download center. For those who are too busy to download it and install it, they might have to wait until June 10th when it hits the Automatic updates.

For those who don't know; Windows XP SP3 (Service Pack 3) will be the third and last major update for Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. The company released a nearly final beta build of SP3 called Release Candidate 2 Refresh last month to the public. The latest beta version added support for the HD Audio high-definition audio format and fixes for some issues with the Windows Update service. Microsoft to date has said only that it expects to roll out a final version of Windows XP SP3 in the first half of 2008.

Interesting.. I shall upgrade as soon as it comes out ^^
Thanks for keeping us up to date Gerri. ^^

Why was I thinking that SP3 was coming out next year, not this year?? O_o

I'm interested to see what sorts of updates they're going to add, seeing as it may just make me choose XP > Vista when I buy my laptop later in the year. If it's the similar to SP2 then I dunno right now.

I'm guessing it's mostly security updates. Everything else should look the same...

from what I've read of it, it'll give a small performance boost, but it's main purpose is to make it easier for Xp to interact with Windows Server 2008 as well as it installs all previous critical security updates that people might have missed.

Not much then, how boring... And reading a bit of something Mewthree linked to, not worth my trouble.

    Fresh install with SP3 Slipstreamed.
Been a beautiful experience, so far.

So what all does SP3 do? Is it just security updates?

Yeah; there's no real cosmetic difference, nothing that jumps out and bites you on the bum. It's pretty much a security-fix-rollup, but I think there may be a new TCP/IP stack due to the fact that I've never been able to have RDP connected for three days at a time without it crashing out before SP3 :3

WARNING!!!: MAKE SURE YOU *SUPER CAPS LOCK!!!* DON'T GET THE PRE-RELEASES, because I have and now the computer I installed it on is STUFFED!!!!!!!!!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, glad I got that out xD

From what I read on those pages, the only adverse affect only affect those running small business POS software.
I downloaded the SP3 installer from the link at the bottom of the post and Have had no compatibility issues whatsoever on either of the 4 computers it's been installed on.

On a lighter note SP1 makes Vista not suck.

I've been working with it for awhile now and sadly didn't see a huge difference.

it's obvious beta stuff can cause problems on some computers but not all, mine works fine with the RC2 install

You're lucky, The computer I installed it on won't turn on, I should be more careful with what major things I install next time xD

    That's true.

I've been working with it for awhile now and sadly didn't see a huge difference.

I've noticed less crashes and freezes, and also my Vista computer doesn't shutdown when I open Photoshop from a shortcut xD

Hmm......I keyed Service Pack 3 into Microsoft .com and nothing came up. but that link you supplied has it. Weird

In what way did you not? Gaming and everything else for me is practically identicle to XP.

I notice a difference I think because my hardware isn't great.
