Wireless Internet: Is it worth it?

In 4 or 5 months I'll be getting a laptop. I'm going to be getting internet on it too. I wanted wireless internet but Ty said it was really slow. But now that the PSP came out and that you can play online if you got a Wireless LAN I though it would be fun to play online.
So I was wondering how slow is wireless and how much does it cost (is it around Dial-Up or DSL/Cable)?

I got Wireless and normal DSL! o_O
It doesnt matter if you got wireless or not.
The router is connected to the normal telephone-cable-box thingy XD
so if you already got DSL, you could just switch the router to a wireless one.
then jack in by cable with your normal PC and wireless with your laptop.

Edit: Oh btw, you internet is as fast as ever.
Only Games can be difficult on WLAN ;)

Ok so Wireless internet is fast. If so then it's most likely the cost of DSL (or around there).
Piro you really should get a PSP game that you can play online. That way you can tell me if it works or not. XD

Well I don't got DSL. I got Dial-Up.
And I'm not using the Wireless LAN for my PSTwo, I'm using it for my PSP.

as far as i'm concerened, broadband wireless isnt slow at all, and is more convienient. and it works well with PSP i've read.

Believe me, wireless internet is worth it. I miss my wireless card since it wont work in my laptop anymore for some reason.
Wireless internet with a laptop means going on PokeCommunity in bed. Now I have to stretch this bulky cable across my room and stay still or it'll fall out.
If you have the opportunity, take it.

Wireless Internet is convenient if you have it in your area, as it offers roaming coverage; however, if you're going to stay in one place most of the time ADSL/cable still offers much better value and speeds. Remember that wireless internet speeds will depend on where you are. I don't speak from experience, though, as the Australian networks don't have great coverage yet. ^^;

A wireless LAN is not internet. LAN = local area network, ie. you have a home network with a wireless base station somewhere. o_O That's what I'm doing when we get our new computer. *is buying a wireless router*

WLAN just means it has a wireless connection, not actual wireless internet. You hook your internet connection into the wireless router, which gives the area the wireless connection you need. When you see a game with the label WiFi Compatible (Ad-Hoc), it means the PSP sets up it's own little connection(no router needed), which gets recieved by another PSP within it's radius.

Infrastructure is the connection to the router, which in turn will give you internet on the PSP(and PSPIRC, PSPAIM, PSPMSN). Now if you notice, most multiplayer games are 'WiFi Compatible (Ad-Hoc)', not 'WiFi Compatible (Infrastructure). There's a trick around this, in which you set your router up to 'look like' another PSP[to your PSP], and then through a server of your choice(there are a few of popularity at the moment), to which your game is forwarded to somebody in who knows where! You can find the story about that at PSP-Hacks.com

Another nifty feature about WLAN on your PSP, is that a number of people are setting up urls with 'old-school' games made convieniently to fit on your PSP screen. That's not of utter importance though, just buy a router and play Untold Legends with me =P

Ok what I got from this thread is.
Wireless internet isn't that slow.
I need broadband to play my PSP online (I read that out of the PSP book).

I'll tell you why that chicken crossed the road.
Because that chicken got really depressed. Because he lost his job that he had for 5 years. He went bankrupted. He lost everything (his house, his car even his TV). His wife ran off with a rooster. So one day he came to a road, he saw a 16 wheeler comming down the road so he just wanted to end it all. So he stepped infront of that truck and BAM!

Okay Andy, I'll try to make it simpler.
PSP has two modes for multiplayer gaming- Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure. You must turn on the WLAN switch to use either of them(it's on the side of your PSP).

Ad-Hoc is when your PSP makes it's own connection, and another PSP connects to it. You have to be near each other to do this, but no router is needed.

Infrastructure is when your PSP links wirelessly to your router, so you play online with others.

Despite their scary names, both modes are simple to understand.
Infrastructure sounds like the better choice, but here's the catch- most games at the moment only use Ad-Hoc(you can see it on the back of the UMD case). So what do you do if you want to play an Ad-Hoc game on the internet? Disguise your router as a PSP, that's what! If you ever want to waste your time learning that mumbo jumbo, you can go to PSP-hacks.com and learn about it.

Now about the Internet connection you need. Dialup won't support PSP well, you'll lag incredibly, and probably drop out of all games you enter. You will need DSL or Cable for this. When you have DSL or Cable, connect it to your wireless router, and that DSL or Cable connection will be available all around your house(and your neighbors houses) wirelessly.


When Cable or DSL is connected to your router, you'll be able to do this:

Yes, all you need are DSL and the wireless router. I seriously doubt that you would have to pay for each computer you use, because the point of the router is to split that single connection into many connections.

After you have your wireless router and service setup, go to-
Settings > Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode > New Connection > Press the right button > Scan(the WLAN switch must be on)

And then it will detect the service from within your house. If you encrypted your connection(that way leeching neighbors can't have their way), you will have to put in the key. Since you're not worried about leeching neighbors though, I guess it doesn't apply to you.

You should ALWAYS encrypt a wireless connection, not just because of leechers but because if you don't encrypt then anyone within range with a wireless card (eg. if someone drives past in a laptop) can get the private files off your computer. I'm surprised to see you talking about not needing to encrypt!

I think Andy lives in an area similar to Antartica(or the moon), nobody would be able to leech his connection, nor want to harm his computer. ;)
And if anyone actually does live near him, I doubt the would be the haxxor type. :P

Nevertheless, if he feels the need to encrypt it, the option is still out there.

And around here you got signal interference from trees, mountains hills etc (my back yard is a mountain XD).
