Spain is probably going to finish second in their group now. Which means.....They'll end up playing Brazil (assuming Brazil finishes first in its group, which is likely to happen next round. Get ready for some excitement guys, these coming matches are going to be stormy:
_________________________________________________________________
Chile is a very tough team to beat. They played excellently in their qualifying matches.
Next match: Spain vs. Uruguay
I see Spain beating Uraguay which will make the Switzerland-Chile game the decider on whether or not Spain even makes it out of the group.
Following match (Let's call it "The Decider". The outcome of this match creates three scenarios I will discuss for the fate of Spain): Chile vs. Switzerland
Lets just say Chile ties Switzerland (note: The Swiss wern't scored against the whole last world cup, they lost on penalties):
The standings after the Chile-Swiss and Spain-Hond matches would look like this:
Code:
Chile [COLOR="Magenta"]4[/COLOR] points
Switz [COLOR="Magenta"]4[/COLOR] points
Spain [COLOR="Magenta"]3[/COLOR] points
Hond 0 points
Then you have two more key matches:
Switzerland v Honduras
Spain v Chile
Assume the Swiss beat Honduras, which I can almost guarantee will happen because Switz defense>>>>>Honduras offense. The
Swiss would now have 7 points and would be sitting at the top of their group.
After Swiss-Hond match:
Code:
Switz [COLOR="Magenta"]7[/COLOR] points
Chile [COLOR="Magenta"]4[/COLOR] points
Spain [COLOR="Magenta"]3[/COLOR] points
Hond 0 points
In the Spain-Chile match, which is going to be tough as hell because Chile matches pretty well against Spain, Spain
NEEDS A WIN TO ADVANCE. If Spain and Chile even
tie, then Spain
will not even be able to make it out of their group.
Code:
If Spain ties with Chile instead of beating them:
Switz [COLOR="Magenta"]7[/COLOR] points
Chile [COLOR="Magenta"]5[/COLOR] points
Spain [COLOR="Magenta"]4[/COLOR] points
Hond 0 points
Code:
If they end up actually beating Chile, which plays a very aggressive
style of football compared to Spain's defense, passing, and possession
holding style of football, they do would finish second in the group.
If Spain beats Chile:
Switz [COLOR="Magenta"]7[/COLOR] points
Spain [COLOR="Magenta"]6[/COLOR] points
Chile [COLOR="Magenta"]4[/COLOR] points
Hond 0 points
And if Spain wins, the
"lucky prize" they will get is Brazil. As you can see that lost to Switzerland today was VERY costly for Spain. I love Switzerland today. They upset the team I hate the most.
A round 16 match-up between the #1 and #2 in the world will definitely be a must watch game. Once again, that would be an incredible finals match, and it will probably happen next round. I would favor Brazil but never count out Spain.[/COLOR]

This scenario of not advancing is of course based on Should Chile tie with Switzerland
in the match I called "The Decider". If Chile can actually take care of the Swiss defense, and beat the Swiss,
Spain could advance if they can win two matches.
So yes, If
Chile beats Switzerland in that early deciding match:
Spain could still come out on top if they can garner two wins. They would have to beat both Honduras (Easy) and Chile (Not easy).
_________________________________________________________________
If on the other hand if
The Swiss beat Chile instead of tying with them. They've pretty much secured the group. I'm pretty sure they'd at least need a draw or better against Honduras. The absolute best Spain would be able to get is second in the group.
So, in this third scenario, the Swiss have already beaten Chile in that early match. Fine.
The standings would look like this:
Code:
Swiss Pwning Chile Scenario
Switz [COLOR="Magenta"]6[/COLOR] points
Chile [COLOR="Magenta"]3[/COLOR] points
Spain [COLOR="Magenta"]3[/COLOR] points
Hond 0 points
So both Chile and Spain have already taken care of Honduras in the above standings.
Let's also assume that Switzerland ends up taking care of Honduras like Chile and Spain before them. They'd be at the very top of the group with
9 points.
This leaves one match as the decider on the second place finisher in this scenario.
Spain vs. Chile
Whichever team wins that match will advance. If they tie, it will be settled by goal differential.

Spain is already down -1 in GD to start this thing.
