The Metroid series I think has some of the most interesting baddies and a slew of great music. To get to explore all that and look for hidden items and power ups was just a great experience overall, and to not put Super Metroid on the 3DS is a crazy idea. There are 100's of classic SNES games that they still own all the rights to and won't go through the effort of making F-Zero, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, etc.
But the Metroid series is just one series that can get you lost, and it wasn't the first either. There are hundreds of worlds I've come across that make me want to stay there awhile, and my favorite will always be a cross between books/games/table top/ and whatever else you can come up with.
