Yeah, even gym leaders screw up and have the most cryptic, hideous, and just down right awful gym designs. I hope they had someone else make these places, otherwise they just need to be rattled. Whether you think it's ugly, bland, or just plain difficult, feel free to ramble and complain, cause that's what I'm makin' the thread for. I'm going to go through it by generation because there's always at least one in every generation that makes you scream.

    Gen I: Lt. Surge
Okay, so looking through garbage cans and finding electric switches is how we get to fight you? How about something simple like beat all the trainers? Why do we have to go through your dirty trash? Hey, they never specified what was in those things either, so we can only imagine the possibilities. But when you manage to find one switch and turn to the other can and not find the other, they reset. Why? How? There was trash in them and now somehow the switch changed cans? Why?!

    Gen II: Pryce
Not a tough one or frustrating one per se, but first time around in GSC, I had no idea how to do this ice puzzle. I don't like having to get help from other people with gyms, but in this case I had to. My cousins couldn't help with this one. I was on my own. The only way I got through was by looking up a guide for it on Serebii. Why do I gotta do that?!

Gen III: Is there enough room for all this? Brawly is first.
Let's have a pitch black gym. Why? Is this Rock Tunnel? And why the misleading gym sign? I read it and thought, "Wave? Like water Pokemon? Well, we are by the sea! This must be a water gym!" Was I sure in for a surprise.

Flannery, are you the next Sabrina? Why are we teleporting throughout a FIRE gym? How does this work? Someone explain this one to me.

Winona's bars of doom. How I had fun with that my first time through. I thought I was never going to get to leave that place. I think I had to get my cousin to help me with that one too.

Tate and Liza are in that same boat. I kept dying and having to get my cousin to get me back to them.

Wallace is the biggest butt biscuit of the game. I actually started my first Sapphire game over because his gym design frustrated me so much, and my starter was at level 69 and I thought that once it hit 70, it wouldn't listen. So I was saddened and my heart was mercilessly ripped out by this gym.

    Gen IV: Erica
I had no trouble with Sinnoh's gyms actually, but Erica in HGSS...what IS this? I can't tell where I can and can't go and it's confusing me. I'm lucky I'm battling her right now because that layout is just weird. I can't tell what's in the foreground and what's not in it and...it's just messy and I don't like it.

Well, now that I got all that off my chest, I feel a lot better! Anyone else wanna take a shot?

    Gen 1- Lt. Surge
The dustbins just take too long to look through and the switches resetting. Why?

    Gen 2-Jasmine
This Gym was just a bit too simple for me. I like there to be at least some challenge, the same applies to Falkner, Brock, Roxanne and Roark.

    Pryce
I hate ice puzzles. I don't care where they are or who owns the Gym, I hate ice.

    Gen 3-Flannery
Teleporting in a Fire Gym makes no sense

    Tate and Liza
I hate the tricky puzzle and to round things off, I'm awful at Double Battles so end up having to get through that place again and again to lose money again and again just to spend hours on one Gym

    Wallace
    I don't like ice.

    4th Gym-Candice
    I hate ice.

    Fantina
In Diamond and Pearl that quiz was designed for someone with as much intellect as a plank of wood.

    Pryce
    I hate ice.

    Erika
That place just made no sense at all. It was just weird, really weird.

    Blaine
If anything because in looking for his Gym I took a wrong turn and went into the Seafoam Islands, where there is ice. Also the trainers were just being obnoxious by standing directly in your way.

I forgot about that one. I thought of it as a unique one actually, and the Platinum puzzle was pretty cool too. However, I'm such a nub at math that I actually had to switch my Poketch to the calculator app just to get through. :( Shush.

Maylene. With the stupid pushing of the bags and if you pushed them in the wrong direction then they'd take about half a million years to stop swinging and then if you left the gym you had to start over and ARGH. I don't mind any of the others, not even Lieutenant Surge's, but hers is so...so...kfdfjsgkffg. *foams at the mouth*

I didn't mind Maylene actually. I didn't think her Gym was that bad.

Celadon Gym In HG/SS, for the reasons posted above. I swear, Erika must've designed that Gym to be the biggest pain in the Azumarill any Trainer would ever face. Also, Sootopolis Gym... I spent about an hour and a half in there. Only to get my butt handed to me by Wallace (I haven't gotten here yet in Emerald). Unlike other people, I didn't actually have any problem with the Fuchsia Gym, since you can see where the invisible walls are by looking really closely at the floor tiles. Those are just the annoying ones, though; as far as odd, non-fitting ones go, I'd say the Fortree Gym. The only thing that really screams Flying-Type is that fact that it's sloping upwards.

On a happier note, this is my 200th post on this forum. Huzzah and hooray.

Gen 1: Again, Vermilion Gym. Nonsense.
Gen 2: Violet Gym. How does a dollar sign with two trainers relate to flying?
Gen 3: Dewford Gym. Black place with dozens of trainers and a gym leader with one hell of a Makuhita. I don't mind Lavaridge Gym because at least the animation for teleporting is fire-ish and it is a puzzle.
Gen 4: Hearthome Gym in Diamond/Pearl. WHAT THE HECK!
Olivine Gym. There are no trainers. All you do is walk and listen to some old people.
    Vermilion Gym. DUSTBINS? XD
Cinnabar Island/Seafoam Islands Gym. Seriously, I was freaked out because I didn't know where the gym was. Why move it because of a volcano? If we saw the volcano like the earthquake in DPP that would be cool, but no. And... being able to move only because trainers walk toward you when they see you? What the heck.

Gen 1: Lt. Surge: Annoying as hell when you unlock one and the second is the wrong one.
Gen 2: Pryce: I never liked sliding ice puzzles.
Gen 3: Flannery: Jump ledges and transporters, why?
Gen 4: Fantina (D/P): Simplest. Math. Quiz. Ever.
    Maylene (Pt): Took me forever.
Erika (HG/SS): The maze with hidden passageways, just... ugh...

Yeah, Surge making you dig through garbage bins is probably just to make up for the fact that the actual battle will probably last ... hm, how long does it take to fire off 1 (Y) to 3 (R/B) Dig attacks? The gym's basically an annoying stopover.

Blaine bugs me because of the stupid. stupid. stupid questions. :P And the sort of vague ones, like ... does Caterpie evolve into Butterfree, I think is one. Directly? No....

i actually loved the ice puzzle in gen3. unfortunately, to fight all the trainers for levels i had to finish the puzzle, fall on purpose, firght my way to bottom, then do puzzle again...

though to be honest, i did not find any of the gym puzzles hard at all, who actually does? i admit that the flying type gym got on my nerves, but never once have i looked up a puzzle. ever.

The only puzzle Ive ever had to look up is Candices, other than that..
D/P gyms other than that are designed for 3 year olds.... (the game is 3+)

Gen 1's Please dont remind me. Sabrina's was actually cool, although extremely frustrating.
Gen 2.. Where were the puzzles in them?
Gen 3.. They gave up at Norman, and then all the logic wasted on norman was built into Tate and liza's , even though their emerald puzzle was the best. ever. Period.

Gen 4- Once again. they gave up at Blaine, Misty;s was cool, albeit no challenge, There should be a maze Gym..

    Gen 1:
Definitely Sabrina's. Unless you had a guide, you had no clue where the heck you were teleporting to. It also didn't help that the sprite didn't look like her at all lol.

    Gen 2:
I actually had a hard time with Morty's gym. whenever I stepped on the wrong area, it teleported me back to the beginning. At least with Pryce's gym, you can see where you're sliding to; Morty's gym was just a pain trying to figure the right path out.

    Gen 3:
Easily the Dewford Gym and Mossdeep Gym. I think the "tear my hair out" level is tied between the two. So irritating.

    Gen 4:
D/P/PT: Candace for sure with the ice puzzle. Was much harder than Pryce's gym imo. Volkner's gym also gave me a really difficult time.

    HG/SS: Viridian Gym...nuff said. Wtf?

    Gen 5:
Idk but Elesa's gym made me pretty impatient. Waiting for the darn roller coasters to finally show up was sort of irritating to me. I think most of the gyms from Black had a flaw like the First Gen though. You had to find the way back to the beginning of the gym, instead of being provided with a shortcut like in the 6th Gen.

Heya, while I hate to say this since you're clearly answering the question, this thread in particular hasn't had a reply in over six years so it's considered dead/inactive. Feel free to remake the discussion if you want to get it going again though as I don't believe an active one currently exists. Thanks. =)
