Worst Plot Twists

Can you think of a movie or TV show that failed you because of the way it resolved? I might make a sister thread for titles that had the best surprises and endings.

In the meantime a movie that has one of the lamest ends I have come across is M Night Shyamalan's The Village. Pity, it had such a great cast of acting talent. That did not save it for me when this monster movie revealed that...

there were never any creatures terrorizing the woods. It was really just the people who lived in the village putting on monster costumes to scare everyone into believing something was out there, when there wasn't. It was a conspiracy to keep generations of people from ever leaving their community. There was never any real danger the whole time. Not only was this pretty anticlimactic, but I think it's a bit implausible. The costumes were stashed in carelessly-easy-to-discover places like right there in the garden shed, and under the floorboard of your houses. C'mon y'all.

The characters are living in a rural farm community that we we're supposed to think is still somewhere in the 19th century at the beginning of the story, when it was all really happening right now. But you could only sustain this illusion for the people living there for so long. Someone is going to see an airplane fly overhead sometimes. Even an Amish community is not living in a state where their fellowship is completely oblivious to the existence of the world outside, in fact often they cooperate frequently with it actually for commerce or to help the local authorities, they're just choosing to live a simple life and reduce outside influences as much as they can. You could maybe pull a plot twist like this off in a post apocalyptic earth where the world population has been reduced, therefore fewer people to potentially come into contact with at any given moment. Scifi shows like the Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits have had episodes with similar themes, but I'm not buying this in the context the The Village takes place in. Sorry, try again.

Pretty much anything by Stephen King!

IT is a great example. The 1990 miniseries is outstanding, with a dreadfully poor ending...

The big budget remakes IT & IT Chapter Two actually poke fun at how bad Stephen King endings are... then proceed to have an even worse ending than the original! 🙄

The only thing worse than "Rey Skywalker" was what her actual second name was. I mean, the entire sequel trilogy was irredeemably, disgustingly bad, but...yeah.
