(Yet Another) Writer's/Artist's Club

ok. next time I'm on Amazon, I'll see if they have it.

Have you ever read The Man Who Fell to Earth? One of my favorite books. Must be pretty obscure, however, because I've never met another human being who's ever read it.

No, I haven't. But hey, obscure books are usually good.

On a similar note, have you ever read the Book of the New Sun?

Hmm...no, but an amazon search tells me that it looks like my kind of thing; science fiction set in the future; Am I right?

Yep...Twist is it works on the societal progression/regression theory. It's one of my favorite books right now.

Sounds good. I may have to pick it up. Ever heard of House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski (I'm almost positive that's spelled wrong)? The only book I know of with it's own soundtrack; Haunted by Poe. I've only read the first one hundred pages, but I'm liking it so far.

I've heard of it, never read it though.

I just finished up Battle Royale recently, that was enjoyable in a somewhat twisted way.

There's another one I've never heard of. But, in the area of twisted stories, Edgar Allen Poe is a favorite of mine; old stories, but classic none the less.

Yeah, Poe's one of my favorites. But Battle Royale's twisted in a different way.

Every year, 50 third-year middle-school classes (about 1,950 students) are kidnapped, put in seperate areas and forced to kill their classmates. It's a translation, by the by, so the writing's not as good as it probably was, but it's still a good read.

Oooh..sounds like it has the creep factor going for it. Not many modern books have that,at least in my experiance. It's all blood and gore, and, in movies, special fx.

It's violent, no doubts about that. No real descriptions about it though. What I think makes it better, though, is that there seems to be no purpose to any of it and no real moral "lesson," if you will, to it.

I like books that do that sort of thing; just tell the story to tell it without giving you a moral lesson or a point. It lets you come up with your own conclusions, right?
That's kind of what House of Leaves does. Its full of little puzzles with no discernable answer. The first page where you'd normally find a dedication reads; This is not for you. , and some trying to "solve" the book say that's a key part.

Yeah, that bit really added to my enjoyment of the book. Also, it might've been the translation, but it seems almost like a journalistic account. I thought that was a nice touch.

Anyway, I'll definately have to look into House of Leaves, sounds interesting.

I've read short stories from that view point before. It helps add to the illusion if realty. I'd really love to be able to write from that view point, but the one time I tried, it came out pretty bad, to say the least. Maybe I'll learn how to in that Creative Writing class I'm taking.

But, yeah, House of Leaves is really good so far. But, I'm reading the British version; I'm told it's slightly different from the American version.

Probably just changing things like "colour" to "color" so our delicate American sensibilities can handle it. *smirk*

 Yeah, could be  . I'm pretty sure the prints larger in the British version. It's about 900 pgs. long. I saw the american version in a book store once, and it was a lot thinner than the dictionary sized copy I have. Plus the cover was different.

They aways have to go and change the cover. Pity, that one.

Yeah. The British copy is a picture of a door handle (which I really don't get) and the American copy is just plain black with like a crop circle-like design and the title in small white letters on the front.

Brit covers are usually cooler and I'd say so in this case. I mean, take a look at the HP UK and US covers.

I've never seen the Harry Potter UK covers; just the American. Are they really different?

And welcome to this thread, 003. I don't recall as you've ever posted here before :) . I actually liked that schedule of 7 classes a day, since it meant I didn't have to sit through an hour and a half of math, which can be either terribly boring or really hard, for me at least, since I hate that subject. I know you probably haven't been there long, judging by the dates, but hows college life?

i dont really remember *hic* *hic* no lol jk nah its ok my roomies are cool. Bunch of motorhead rednecks hehe they are great.
