Your opinion on custom tiles?

If there is a real purpose behind adding the custom tiles (examples: sewer tiles, prison, old-looking town (if you traveled to the past for some reason)...), it's great to have them.

If the reason behind adding custom tiles is "FR tiles look boring, let's switch to DP tiles instead", I don't really see a point in adding them.
 
They can help, but are a risk. If done correctly they can give your game a unique feel, and allow it to have all sorts of cool effects. If done incorrectly it can make it painful to look at the game. Most of the tiles nintendo made actually look good (excluding some of the R/S ones), so there really isn't a need to change them. Still, if you want a floating island or giant tree, you need to add new tiles. The trick is to make a unifrom style of tiles.
