Youtube tag is taxing

    Many Youtube videos embeded into a single thread can drastically affect browser performance and stability. [Example]
    As I understand, a fair number of PC users may have low-end systems so I'm not even getting the worst of it.
     
    I actually just spoke to Antemortem about asking people to use spoiler tags for videos in the "What are you listening to?" thread. I get so much lag, it's insane. And my internet is fine and speedy, so...yeah. Glad someone else brought this up. It gets really annoying.
     
    I have a 2012 laptop Core i7 8gb of RAM with Chrome and that what are you listening to thread locks up my browser so bad ;-;
     
    While I can't fairly say that every thread/post from now on should be limited to x number of unspoilered Youtube videos or that every video should be spoilered, I can attempt to regulate it in threads that will lead to multiple Youtube embeds, such as the WAYLT thread, the latter leading to at least fifteen videos per page. As for changing anything on a large-scale basis, that'd have to be let to the h-staff.

    What's unfair about spoilered youtube videos? I really can't see anything wrong with that. It is not as if they have to actually get rid of it. This way, the people interested in can open the spoiler and look at it. Those that aren't, don't have to bother. What is unfair, however, is getting hit with a massive amount of lag every time you happen to meander on over to that section, especially if you're just checking it out to say... see what a friend is listening to.

    Er, you misunderstand. I mean I can't make the decision that the forum should globally enforce that rule, but my own section now has an embed-must-be-spoilered rule. 8)
     
    Generally speaking, when properly configured, extensions like NoScript or FlashBlock work pretty well against auto-loading embeds. The extra CPU load however isn't coming strictly from the flash objects, although they do contribute a significant chunk because your browser has to isolate those from the rest of the memory to discourage known exploits. The way PC embeds these things is within an iframe, so this may quickly balloon the amount of memory needed. Best thing to do is to avoid embed heavy threads or employ add-ons for your browser so they don't load up and chew through your free memory like it's going out of style.
     
    Spoiling won't fix anything because it'll still be loaded and it'll still cause the lag. Spoiling doesn't stop that from happening. Linking it, instead of embedding it, is a much better resolution to this problem.
     
    Won't be easily applicable to the Let's Play and etc section given it's required that videos are posted here. Might be the sole exception to it though?
     
    A lot of this could actually be down to the browser you use. Google Chrome has had a long history in being quite slow at loading Youtube videos and anything flash related. In saying that, it's not a case where I'd like to see people have to jump out of their browser. It's true, a lot of loading lag will come from your system. At the moment I use a computer will relatively high specs and also have quick internet. I still receive some lag when loading the example page above.

    Evidently, something needs to be done about it. The kind of options that we would be looking at would be to edit the YouTube tag so that it becomes a button that does not load the flash player until a user clicks on it. Further onto that we could create a plugin so that only X amount of
     
    Well, on my 2005 laptop with Windows XP, 2GB RAM, 40 GB HDD and Firefox, the thread mentioned in the first post locks the laptop up just after it loads 2 videos or so...
    BUT even worse, on my Late-2012 Apple iMac, with OS X, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD and Chrome the whole computer becomes preety much unusable when the page loads in full.
    So, I think that there should be a 5 videos max. limit per thread.
