Reflection on PC popularity contests

Gonna dig up some MotM threads, to show that yeah, I did partake in them, 3 years ago. Also doing this in the middle of the year so that it doesn't seem like I'm complaining about our most recent MotY thread or anything like that in particular lol.

    August 2009
I barely remember this long ago. Scratch that, I don't. Came 2nd in Best Newbie to Rukario. Hey, just another reason why MotM was fantastic eh?

    July 2009
This was back when there was a big group on PC called "Sweater" who kind of took over the MotM's. Came joined 3rd for favourite male, 1st in Nicest, 3rd in Most Welcoming, 1st in Best Newbie (which I don't actually understand), 2nd in most helpful, Oh, and won in that month two. It was half rigged iirc. To stop Sweater winning every month. More of a boycot. This is another reason why we loved MotM.

    October 2009
Won in favourite male with Gummy, placed first in best writer, second in ROM Hacking LOL, placed somewhere in Most Obsessed. I'll get back to that month later!

Now for the last month I'll do...

    November 2009
1st in favourite supporter, 2nd in favourite writer.

Now, for you kiddies who haven't been here long enough to know what Member of the Month was, it was a monthly popularity competition, a bit like Member of the Year, and consistently left people upset or down.

The thing is, I have two points to make really, how things change, and how they stay the same. For example, things change massively, I came second in best ROM Hacker? I mean, I don't do ROM Hacking, I tipped in it a long time ago, but people would never consider me to be anywhere near it now. And winning best writer is something people would also never connect me with, I haven't written in very long. However, the things that I'll miss are being seen as nice and helpful, two categories I did well in over the years, but the way PC changes, I'd never be considered for these any more. Not that it's the acclaim I'd ever want, but what I mean is, the people who are nice or helpful, who win these categories are only ever within certain groups of people. The understated, hard-working little ants on PC only ever get walked passed in these competitions, because they don't hunger to be seen. The truly nice, and helpful people do it without wanting recognition.

This brings me to MotY, I really do dislike it. I feel that it in no way recognizes those who deserve recognition, I feel it's a lazy way of letting people know they're doing well. I always think these things are a popularity contest to single out those who are most evident on PC already. All it ever does is gives the dogs their bones, the bones they beg for.

I feel that community spirit should be shown in other ways, outside of ballots and polls. As no matter what, you leave a lot of people disappointed to appease a small number of others. I think for the common good PC would do better without them, or at least better with a more included event. I feel that rather than spend time on a MotY thread at the end of every year, we should put more effort into community get-togethers, work on more fun and integrated things. Forums shouldn't be about the members who stand out, it should be about the members who pull together to improve the experience. It is a community after all, even though most people lose sight of that.

Ah yes, the MotM... I remember this. I also remember a conversation where some members were talking about who they should all vote for to stop that group of people, literally going "we should all vote for such and such to stop them winning that one", and planning the winners for the next month. Boy, that was one weird conversation.

But yeah, edit moment - these competitions don't really show the best side of PC. Sure, a bit of competition is healthy, but people should be constantly nice and helpful as it is a community. Nice people aren't always the most popular.

Funny, I don't remember you ever winning ;]

Anyway my point isn't to dig up the past so much but to make a point on popularity contests on pc, just to clarify!

This is a really nice blog, although I don't understand why one of the links goes to a roleplay from 2004 .-.

I remember a lot of these people. A LOT of them are gone now, too. I remember honestly not wanting to ever be nominated due to all the drama I'd read about stalking convos and various forums from back then :c

I should remember these but I just can't XD shows how much I left the hacking forum back then...

Anyway, whilst MOTM MOTY are definitely a popularity competition, it would be nice for each section to have noted members who have helped/contributed well for the year.

Kind of a "Helping Hands of ____" or "Rising stars of ____" - where there isn't just one person taking all the praise but several people, chosen only by the moderator/s of that section.

I think you're worrying too much about hurting feelings. Unless they have much deeper issues with self esteem than the average person, I doubt failing to win MOTM/MOTY is going to be a huge blow to their egos. I see it as a harmless poll that the majority of people have fun with.

In general our society is too concerned with hurting feelings and we end up bubble-wrapping people who don't need to be coddled. :/

Well, at least in the MOTY/MOTM that I've observed, sometimes there've been significantly bloated egos as well. I can understand a confidence boost, but the full on obnoxious I've seen a few people have afterward really does get bad and annoying after awhile, so it kinda is bad from the opposite extreme as well. Not saying I disagree in the slightest with what you mean about the coddling, but it's still equally bad to fuel someone's arrogant nature as well, which is a common thing in most kinds of popularity contest.

little do people know, sweater wasn't really like a sweater that you wear. it was more like a hat you put on your ass. so it was an asshat.

Not so much about hurting feelings though, but bloating egos. Will reply to more comments when I'm not on my phone :)

  • I kind of agree with Ausaudriel, though people whose egos are inflated 10x by winning are just disappointing to me. :x
