Editor's Note: It's been awhile since I've last blogged, so excuse the poor grammar here and there.

I have this very weird characteristic about myself. I guess not exactly weird but more a "why the hell do I act this sort of way?" kind of characteristic. You see, I don't like disappointing people. I'd like to think that I'm not the only person who thinks like that, as we should all strive to do our best. That being said, we should ultimately be striving to be our best for ourselves and not for others or ulterior motives. I, however, have this involuntary feeling that erupts when I disappoint people. In a conscious state of mind, I don't have that feeling. Unfortunately, it just comes up on it's own. Like I said, it's a "why the hell do I act this sort of way?" kind of characteristic.

    Spoiler:
I've spent six years of my life at a particular job. Located near my house is a retro movie drive in which opened up in 1957. Over the summers in which I've worked there, I can tell you that it wasn't like other jobs - it felt like a family. The people who owned the drive in had ran the place for over 40+ years, and there was a real homey sense around the attraction. All the food was home made, customer interaction was pure, and it had a real "50's vibe" to it, there being a jukebox and the memorabilia all around the inside of the diner. When you went to the drive in you actually felt like you were taking a trip back in time and experiencing the awesomeness of that time period first hand. It was amazing to say the least.

Daily Comic - "Being Macho" by Wulff & Morgenthaler of WuMo
    Spoiler:
Unfortunately, late last summer, the couple sold the drive in to a corporation which completely flipped the place on it's head. They got rid of all the memorabilia of the place, sold the jukebox, and completely renovated the inside have a more "get in, get out" attitude; the booths that we had inside the place were completely removed, leaving customers having to take their food and taking it elsewhere. Furthermore - and this is the big kicker for me - they "dumbed down" the entire place; instructions of how to do this and how to do that have been placed literally everywhere in the diner, which frustrates the heck out of a veteran like myself (and one of the last employees of the old management, everyone else had up and quit when the place was bought out.) It feels like all and all that all of the employees are being treated like babies; the drive in felt like any other fast food place you went to.

    Spoiler:
Even though it was hard at first to make the decision to quit after such a long time, I know that if I had stayed I would have been prolonging the inevitable. Thankfully, I had been proactive with job searching and had discovered a teaching position with kindergartners that I scooped up in a heartbeat. Because I want to be a kindergarten teacher, this will hopefully be an excellent opportunity to put my skills to the test, as well as just add more to my resume in pursuit of my future. But like I said, quitting a job I had worked at was very hard, especially a job which I loved ever so much for the longest time. What about you guys? Has there ever been a job you've had which you've grown to like? What has been the longest job you've ever had? What jobs have you had which you've absolutely hated? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!

  • I can safely say tutoring two specific kids were the jobs I hated. One was just too hyper the other was a snooty teenager with tickets on herself and who didn't turn up half the time.

I love my current job though, although there's still things I'd like to see change. I can't imagine having it suddenly flipped on its head like that. It must have sucked to unbelievable degrees. At least you've been able to make something good of it though and move into another job that you'll love.

As a side note, that's one of my favourite ERB videos.

  • I didn't really *quit* my first job, which was a front-end lead position, I was laid off. But lemme tell ya, I loved that job to bits and pieces. But after my first manager transferred out and another manager came in, everything was turned over to worse and started laying off loads of employees, including myself.

Here I am now, as a supervisor at another job. Take that. :)

I agree that it's super hard to leave a job you really loved, but there will be times that it'll feel like doors are opening for you for better opportunities, and that you will be able to use your skills learned from previous jobs and apply them to your current + future jobs. This will let potential employers know that you got guts, glory, and you are ready to take on the world. :)
