Energy Ball? What kind of attack is that? Can Bulbasaur or Chikorita learn it? Treecko?
Yes, Energy Ball is a Grass move, Fabledawn.

It's Grass type attack which has a base power of 80, accuracy 100 and is a special attack.

Only Treecko learns it by levelling up, the rest can learn it too, just by TM.
Yes, that's right. And only some grass starter Pokemons and others can use this attack.

    can i join please

    ~shadow~
Sure you can join, shadow25. Welcome! I will add you in the list soon. And tell me what is your favourite starter and why?

Sounds like one of these new non-making-sense moves they put into D/P.... Hm, but I guess that goes as off-topic, since this is a starters club.

Out of the blue, guys, I've never really managed to pick a favorite starter. Not even one favorite per generation. But I almost disdain the Hoenn/Sinnoh ones and love the Kanto/Johto ones.

Not some, all of them can learn it via TM.

Some non-grass starters can learn it as well IIRC.
I see. I think grass starter Pokemons can use Energy Ball by TM or level up.

Yes, that's right. Which starter Pokemon did you like the most, Fabledawn?

... I just told you I'm not able to pick one ^^

But I guess I like Chikorita the best in Johto. But Totodile is awesome too. Kanto starters are awesome all of them.
But in Hoenn, I thought they didn't really feel like they played in the same league as the previous starters.

Ash's Johto and Kanto starters didn't evolve very often, and they could still hold their own in a league battle/leader battle. But May's Torchic, for example, was a weakling and Treecko had no decent grass moves since the anime didn't seem to know how to animate the Absorb move until the 4 gen season. Well, yes, it had to learn the bullet seed...

And although I like Chimchar and it's evolutions, I don't think the 4:gen starters makes much sense either. But they're better than Hoenn's alright.

Right, there's another rant for ya.

Okay, I know. So did you only like the Kanto and Johto starter Pokemons, Fabledawn?

Well in a way yes.. but in essence it's a pretty decent attack to use.

Blame the anime. The anime's... horrible with depicting attacks and power. Sometimes you'll find the protagonist's starters well ahead and with the game and other times horribly weak and vulnerable.
They should have had Absorb sorted out ages ago.. as well as Mega Drain and Giga Drain.

You don't?? Penguin, monkey and.. um, whatever the last one is. Land turtle?
I didn't really like Chimchar much before, but I've slowly just got used to it. Especially using Infernape ingame.

    Cyndaquil's still my favourite~

Cool. So how did they depict Absorb? The anime is horrible with it's end credits too, ever since Battle Frontier Pokemon has gotten no scenes where we see our heroes, Dawn and Ash with anyone else there may be at the end or anything along those lines. It's just a horrible black title card backed by bad music or a song. But Totodile is and always will be my favourite starter pokemon.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it looked like the attack made the opposition turn red and then some kind of line thing went towards them.
But don't take my word for that at all, I watched that ep in almost over a year ago now.
It's the first one where they meet Nando which I think is the 4th D/P episode.

Only the dub version does that.. which is horrible. If you watch it in Japanese, they have different ending theme songs as well. For example, D/P has had two main ones so far. Hikari's theme song "Kimi no soba de" and the new one "Kaze no message".

Okay, I see. Why did the anime give starters learn powerful moves early, Alex? Mudkip is my favourite starter Pokemon. But I still like Charmander too.

I didn't like Chimchar much before either, but now I've grown to love it. It's so cute! And I think it all started with this picture:

It's for the storyline... technically if you go by the games, it'd be impossible for a Pokemon to just learn an attack whenever it feels like it...

The anime writers need it, otherwise we'd just be watching boring old "tackle!" everytime any of the battle scenes came on.

Okay, I know. Thanks for telling me that, Alex. I think starters like to use powerful moves because they saw people's Pokemons using it.

Which of the starters or their evolutions would be best suited for/would you rather use in a contest?

Bulbasaur and/or Totodile I would be using in a contest. Totodile's evolution Croconaw could also be possible for a contest.

the cute and elegant for contests, such as Meganium for beauty, and the strong like Typhlosion for gyms.
Either way starter pokemon are good for both kinds.
