Even actual scientists have studied this subject with brain scans and so on. The truth is, listening to music does cause activity in other parts of the brain that simply the ones that deal with hearing. Certain frequencies seem to evoke certain feelings in people. It's purely physiological, like practically everything that happens in our heads. I don't know a lot about this subject, so I'm not going to say much more. This much, however, I know, because I studied this subject for my presentation about the background music of games.

I am, however, pretty sure that music doesn't cause any kind of addiction, except maybe in a case where you yourself make yourself obsessed about it. In a way, I think that it's worse to tell people that some music is made by Devil and nobody should listen to that, because it evokes powerful images in people. Maybe it'll even raise the likelihood of people listening obsessively to that kind of music. I'm not a psychologist either, so this is just speculation xD I have studied some psychology, yes, but not nearly enough to fully comprehend all these things.

Anyway, the way I feel, no music is evil or bad. All possible genres of music have fans, and music in general is one of the most awesome art forms, because it doesn't matter where you live and what language you speak, you can still enjoy it. I also like the effects music has on my mood, because I can take advantege of that ^<^

I used to listen to music only occasionally, but when I started listening to Indian music most of the time I got addicted. I now listen to it while I do my homework, at school, and almost anywhere imaginable. I also watch a lot of Bollywood films, a very good source of music.

Fortunately this has not impeded my grades or anything. It is also good that I do not have anyone telling me that it is unethical or dirty. My fahter's side of the family is Hindu, and most Hindu prayers are in the form of song which gets very lively during celebrations such as Diwali.

Also, if anyone here goes to an Indian wedding, you will know that music is not rejected in India.

You're teachers are probably right about it becoming an addiction, because there rarely is a time when I'm not listening to music, I have my iPod on all day at school, listen to my iTunes when I'm on the Computer, and have my iPod in sometimes when I'm walking around the house.

As I said in some other thread, listening to hardcore techno and gabber gets me pumped up and I just want to smash someone's jaw into the curb.

Um, (pseudo-)scientists have studied this topic extensively. I'm pretty sure they've come up with a pretty solid conclusion about how music affects the brain. Anything else is just an exception or a lie.

Pseudo-scientists? Last time I checked brain scans are just as empirical as any other medical observation, which, like everything empirical, all rest on the assumption that what can be observed is is an accurate representation of what is actually occuring. Furthermore, it's silly to say that science comes to conclusions at all, since every theory is subject to falsification.

I listen to music very regularly, and not much of it is very clean. But I didn't think it would mean much, as long as I didn't let it control me. Now, my R.E. teacher's telling me that music can affect you in bad ways. He also says it causes addiction if listened to regularly. Another R.E. teacher said it intoxicates the mind. What are your views on music?

This is probably a bit off-topic... But what is a R. E. teacher? I've never heard of such a thing.

And it really depends on the music, and the person. One thing that gets on my nerves are people who say they don't listen to music for the lyrics, but they start reciting the lyrics to a song the next moment.

Or that person who pops up and shouts "THIS IS MY SONG" for every other song that starts playing. So bothersome...

Not to mention, everything is being filed as an addiction lately. Video games, TV, potato chips, golfing, sleeping, feeding your goldfish, posting on PC, and now music.

that does not make any sense. how would you ban yourself to not to listen to...heavy metal...? (its the morning, so i f(l)ail at making sense xD)

Music is a part of life. That much is natural. I play a bit of guitar, LOVE playing rock band with my friends when we're all together, and when we're all jammin out to The Strokes on Reptilia, we become closer friends. The views of your teacher are completely lopsided and irrational, so don't listen to them!

I have banned myself from heavy metal because it sucks :P
Really, though, I favour my other R.E. teacher's opinion. I do believe it can change people for the better or for the worse, and I want it to change me for the better. (I don't think Love Game will help me do that XD)

The music I listen to has no real effect on me, except for the occasional irresistable urge to bop my head up and down when it's got a really solid beat ^^

Calmer music tends to make me sleepy, though.

    "intoxicates the mind" XD

Nope. Music has NO affect on who you are.
    Unless, you let it.

There was this nerdy girl in my cluster last year, and her ipod was filled with Rap music.

I really don't get the metal genre, however.
It isn't very plesant to hear loud, screaming grumbling in my ear with a guitar about too break from being strummed to hard, and drums about to pop from being hit too hard.

    Music motivates me sometimes.
Maybe that's why my coach turns on the music whenever we're doing an exercise. xD
    Guess it's common psychology. ^^;

No, pretty sure music never effects you in a negative way, that's what I think anyways. I listen to heavy music too like screaming and whatever but doesn't make me depressed or anything like that, I love it so much. And violent or sexual songs don't make me a violent or horny person, haha.

I firmly believe music has no effect on a person.

Music is simply sounds that give you certain emotions. It only affects you if you let it or are to spineless to base your thoughts and morality on something positive. Music can actually affect you in positive ways, it can inspire you to do creative things. Or in many cases it can inspire you to do things you would never do previously.

Also saying Metal "Sucks" is just opinion. I listen to heavy metal myself but am tollerant of other styles.

You could argue that not listening to music can have negative effects. If I didn't have my daily dose of music, I'd go crazy with boredom. Music is a great outlet to relieve stress and entertain yourself, especially when you play an instrument. I guess you could make the case that the lyrics of a few genres (see: rap) can be inappropriate for younger children. But negative effects? I highly doubt that. Compared to what everyone sees in the media on a daily basis, not listening to music just because there might be some negative effects seems rather silly. =/

Music most certainly affects people. The extent to which it does, and how it does, depends on the person and the music itself.
