I've been gone for a long time due to not having a computer, so now i'm starting over all my challenges, which in this case is my fighting umc. I'm playing on Fire Red, planned team is:
    Primape
    Machamp
    Hitmonchan
Hopefully I can finish this up before today is over, if not I'll probably finish it tomorrow.

  • Pearl Update #4.

Cardwell, I am doing the same monotype as you lol. Why didn't you teach Staraptor Return? 102 base power with STAB, dude!

Anyway, here's my update. It's been a long time coming, I haven't played this for a while (Dec 16, holy cow).
    Started in Iron Island.

I win the long time contest, i was gone since Nov 17 lol.

I'm a big user of the bitter medicine, its cheap, and the revival herb is essentially a max revive, so return doesn't work for me.

    Anyways

I beat Bertha, despite the annoyance.
Flint was... heck, Flint is never hard.
I'm praying Lucian will be easy for ONCE
got 2 critical hits with Attack order, one on mr. mime, the other on alakazam. Staraptor OHKO'd gallade with fly. Sadly, espeon got a critical hit with psychic on Vespiquen. 2 flys took Espeon down. i HATE Bronzong. i took it down though. He was easier than usual. Which is nice, he's usually harder than cynthia.
    anyways, cynthia tomorrow

Edit: i couldnt resist so i beat her tonight.
EXPLOSION FOR THE WIN!!!it took out milotic, garchomp and togekiss all in one shot.
Lucario got earthquaked in one shot. Spiritomb was a pain, but it always is. I like Gliscor go down against roserade so i could healed staraptor for the ko with fly

    Final Team:
    Spr_4p_398_m.png

Staraptor (lvl 53) well rounded. beat the rock gym on his own
    -Fly
    -Close Combat
    -Aerial Ace
    -Steel Wing
    Spr_4p_416.png

Vespiquen (lvl 51) was difficult to use, but when needed she got the job done, an amazing wall
    @Quick Claw
    -Heal Order
    -Defend Order
    -Attack Order
    -Power Gem
    Spr_4p_426.png

Drifblim (lvl 51) MVP on final battle
    @Spell Tag
    -EXPLOSION (win)
    -Shadow Ball
    -Baton Pass
    -Thunderbolt
    Spr_4p_472.png

Gliscor (lvl 55) overall MVP, esential for last 3 gyms, and most of the E4
    @Earth Plate
    -Earthquake
    -Ice Fang
    -Fire Fang
    -Swords Dance

anyways, onto... whatever the gen 5 region is called, granted i can get a emulator and rom for it. I might do water on their first, since i still have to finish that one.

Tell me, tell me, tell me...

Would it be acceptable for me to undertake the Psychic, Dark or Ghost challenge despite the fact I can't get Black or White? (No Japanese lingo skills, you see ^^)

    The games I'd use would be;
    Leafgreen
    Soulsilver
    Emerald
    Platinum

I hope this is acceptable, and am awaiting confirmation.

  • I win the long time contest, i was gone since Nov 17 lol.
Actually, I do; last time I posted before yesterday was October, I'm pretty sure. (:

    ------------------------------------------

Alright! I finally made my way through Victory Road, which was some pretty good training, I must say. I then proceeded to spend over 160k Pokedollars on healing supplies; withdrew all the ethers and rare candies I had been storing away in the box all game; and began to take on the Elite Four.
OHMYGODTHEICETYPES. Lori was a pain; I had to use both of my max revives on Ms. Nido over the course of the battle in order to defeat her. Bruno proved to be almost no challenge to me; I think his Hitmonchan did the most amount of damage, which was still very little. AGATHA IS NO LONGER ALLOWED TO USE CONFUSE RAY OR DOUBLE TEAM. After her Gengars and Haunter were taken care of, I had very little trouble with the remaining two Pokemon. Lance managed to make my Pokemon faint a couple of times, but it was too easy to faint all of his Pokemon.
And then, of course, I find out that my rival is already League Champion. I use a bunch of ethers and heal my team to full health before entering the next room to take him down. I had issues with Gyrados and Charizard, but everyone else was really easy to take care of. In fact, Charizard was such a pain that I eventually just kept reviving someone and switching them out to revive someone else until it ran out of Fire Blast and was forced to use Aerial Ace, Fire Spin, and Slash against Geo, all of which were pretty useless. Oh, and Geo knows Rock Slide.
And so, with that, I am now League Champion and can move on to Crystal Version!
(will update with final team later)

    ---------------------------------------------

So, I have finally begun my journey to Victory on Crystal version (with the name Zhinc). I chose a Cyndaquil (a female!) as my starter so that my rival would have a Pokemon type at least part of my team would be weak to (in retrospect, I should have chosen Totodile, because I'm pretty sure I'll be using a Quagsire in this game). I proceeded to beat up everything that came at me along the way to and from Mr. Pokemon's house. By the time I reached the poor Professor Elm again to describe my encounter with the red-haired thief (I named him Chris for some reason), my Cyndaquil was already at level nine, pushing level ten. I then went and caught a couple of Pokemon, including a Geodude, who would become the first member of my team.
She's a female and I named her Gina. I then proceeded to grind her up to level eight or nine before heading north towards Violet City. Deciding that I really want to get a second member of my team very soon (and feeling wary of the Bellsprout in the Sprout Tower), and thrashed around some birds at the gym, where Gina grew to level 11 and learned Rock Throw. OH HAPPY DAY. I deposited all the Pokemon I had caught along the way (and my pretty little Cyndaquil) and challenged Faulkner, who is no longer allowed to use Mud Slap, by the way. After missing several times, I eventually took down both his Pokemon and got my badge. I then headed south and am waiting in a patch of grass for nightfall, so that I may catch a Wooper to add to my team.

  • I'll give it a try, starting from fire red then Ruby then Soul Silver.

I'll use fire types on Fire Red. Supposing it's okay, I'll start now. I'll update as soon as I defeat Brock.

    @Update:

-Started the game with a girl, called her BLUE.
-Defeated rival "GREEN" when got "CHARSUKE" the charmander.
    -Got pokedex and pokeballs
-Defeated most trainers on viridian forest, went to challenge brock.

Challenged brock with my charmander LV 14.

Me:So you're the gym leader? Too bad, my pokémon knows metal claw.
Brock:I'll prove that I can still win.

Geodude KO'd by 2 metal claws.

    Me:What were you saying?
Brock: Don't get arrogant, I still have ONIX.

Onix KO'd by 3 Metal Claws.

Me:I guess that gives me the badge.
Brock: o.o how could you defeat onix so easily? Anyway, yep, you won the badge.

    @Update 2:

    This will be brief.
    -Defeated rockets at Mt. Moon.
-Learned both mega punch and mega kick.
-Defeated everyone on the gym but misty.
-Defeated everyone on the way to Bill.
    -Got SS Ticket.
-Fought misty, OHKO'd her Staryu, made her starmie's hp go to 1, while she made charmeleon's HM go to 2, with 2 hits from each. She used super potion making her Starmie's HP go green, then I Mega Punch'd her on a suicidal try but it turned out as a critical, which KO'd Starmie.

All hits when fighting misty were Mega Punch.

    Stats after misty:

    Charmeleon LV 30
    Mega Kick
    Mega Punch
    Ember
    Metal Claw

  • First Normal UMC hoenn update!

Started on ruby(thank you tony for pointing that out to me) and chose treeko as my starter to make it more difficult. Caught a zigzagoon and named him Ziggy. got him to level 7 and got to pedalburg. had wally get a ralts went pedalburg forest. saved the executive and traveled to rustboro. caught a whismur and a skitty(remind me of pokemon adventure..) and named them Amp and Kit-Kat. Got all three of them to level 15, with the help of picked up rare candies, and challenged the gym. I new i was going to have trouble with Roxanne. It took all three of my pokes to take her out. Ziggy used sand attacks and tail whips to weaken her geodude, then i had Amp use uproar after Ziggy fell and he killed geodude, after she used her 2 potions. Then her nosepass came up. I tried to use some howls to increase the attack, but it wasnt doing much. So i just had him use uproar until he fainted and force me to use Kit-Kat. I used doubleslap to the already weakened nosepass and super potions that i bought and found whenever her HP fell. This was the easiest time i've ever fought roxanne..

I walked out and saw a magma grunt run by, with the same executive that i saved chasing him. I healed, then got to the grunt, defeating him and saving the wingull and taking the goods. I got the package i need to give to steven and i hopped on a boat and traveled to Dewford. I went to the cave, navigated blind, and got the package to steven. I evloved Ziggy, and i end this update with that.

    My Current Team...

    Amp/Whismur

    Level 15

    -Pound
    -Uproar
    -Astonish
    -Howl

    Kit-Kat/Skitty

    -Attract

    Ziggy/Linoone

    Level 20

    -Tackle

    HeartGold Ult. Mono-Ground Run

Just finished my Mono-Ground run of Heartgold.

Didn't really do any updates on it as my DS just never seemed to be nearby when I'd think to post.

    Going to start Emerald now!

    Final team:

:t207: L.85 Grape the Hardy Gliscor
    X-Scissor
    Wing Attack
    Earthquake
    Sword Dance (Sandstorm for Red)

    Synopsis:
Very powerful poke. Huge attack, speed and defense. Only two weaknesses although one is a huge 4x weakness to ice. It's only real downside is the anguish of getting enough BP in the Battle Frontier to get the item needed to evolve it from Gligar. Used to sweep Red and his obnoxiously leveled pokemon.

:t034: L.66 Mango the Sassy Nidoking
    Dragon Pulse
    Sludge Bomb
    Megahorn
    Earth Power

    Synopsis:
Should be on every ground team in every series he's available. Has a solid special attack stat and moveset pool when most ground types aren't as flexible.

:t195: L.61 Kumquat the Serious Quagsire
    Waterfall
    Earthquake
    Yawn
    Amnesia

    Synopsis:
It's stats aren't great but it is the only ground type I could get that wasn't weak to water. In fact it can even absorb water making it a great anti-water poke for a team whose bane is water types.

:t028: L.57 Cherry the Brave Sandslash
    Shadow Claw
    Rock Climb
    Stealth Rock
    Dig

    Synopsis:
Sandslash has a great attack move pool that is sadly hindered in HeartGold by most of those TM's being only available in the fairly annoying Battle Frontier. Was useful early on but by the end he just became an early Stealth Rock sacrifice.

:t208: L.59 Pineapple the Naughty Steelix
    Crunch
    Ice Fang
    Stone Edge
    Curse

    Synopsis:
Excellant physical wall and great against flying types. Useful against Dragon types that don't have a fire move.

:t221: L.60 Lime the Hardy Mamoswine
    Ice Shard
    Earthquake
    Avalance
    Hail

    Synopsis:
Strong final evolution but earlier evolutions are painfully hard to level up. Solid performer if you keep it away from Fire and Fighting moves. Comes late in the game but just in time for Claire.

    Honourable Mention: Geodude
Dropped him after defeating Morty but Geodude was instrumental in defeating the first 3 gyms. It is the first Ground type you can access and is extremely useful for the early game, but is quickly overshadowed by other ground types later on.

If no one minds, I would like to ask a couple of questions about this challenge.

I have always thought about playing monotype, but never actually tried it before. I have played Red, Yellow and Platinum, and am currently playing SoulSilver (but getting a little frustrated with having lots of Pokemon I do not like, and very few I do). An Emerald cartridge has just fallen into my hand today, so I was thinking about starting a game of it and playing monotype.

My first question is should I play monotype on a first play-through of a game (ie Emerald), or would I be strongly advised to play normally once and then go back, or perhaps use a different game altogether (eg Platinum/SoulSilver have more features/options and therefore superior)? Since I have plenty of experience in other games, I *think* I should be fine, but would like some feedback from others before trying.

My second question is to type. Since I played Red, I have liked the idea of playing an all Psychic team, and my favourite Pokemon is Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir. My concern is that Psychic Pokemon do not fall out of the sky early on, so the first few gyms may be painful; I think Abra was the only option prior to the first Gym in Platinum and there were none in Red/Yellow or SoulSilver. Would a Psychic monotype be fine for a first attempt, or should I try something easier (eg Water) or otherwise more numerous (eg Normal)?

  • Elric, I may not be very experienced on monotyping myself, but I think you should first play water, fire or flying. They are easy to find/get, especially fire/water as you start with one. Flying are also pretty easy to get, and can reward well. Anyways, no updates for now but going to continue my game now.

    @Update: Another brief update.

-Defeated Lt. Surge after getting CUT on Ship.
-Defeated rival on Ship as well as all other trainers there were.
    -CHARSUKE evolved to Charizard.
    Current team:

    "CHARSUKE" level 38 Charizard
    Mega Kick
    Mega Punch
    Flamethrower
    Wing Attack

    @Update

This update is a bit bigger.

-Went through rock tunnel to celadon
    -Beat Team Rocket on Celadon
    -Beat Erika
-Got an Eevee, Evolved to flareon with fire stone, named him RONO.

So my team is as follows:

    CHARSUKE LV 48 Charizard
    Brick Break
    Slash
    Flamethrower
    Aerial Ace

    RONO LV 25 Flareon
    Helping Hand
    Sand Attack
    Growl
    Quick Attack

HM MASTER LV 21 Gloom (Evolved it so I could get the 10 caught requirement for Flash, to have 2 HM's with it)
    Absorb
    Sweet Scent
    Flash
    Cut

    Screenshot:

    Update:

-Defeated team rocket at the ghost tower.
-Defeated Snorlax at bridge for better access.
    -Defeated Koga, Screen below:

    Update:
-Defeated Team Rocket at Silph Co.
    -Defeated Sabrina

    Team after Sabrina:

    CHARSUKE LV 64 Charizard
    Brick Break
    Slash
    Flamethrower
    Aerial Ace

    RONO LV 26 Flareon
    Helping Hand
    Sand Attack
    Growl
    Quick Attack

    HM Master LV 22 Gloom
    Absorb
    Sweet Scent
    Flash
    Cut

LV 25 Gyarados(Another HM slave, without a name)
    Thrash
    Thunder Wave
    Dragon Rage
    Surf

    @Update:
    -Got Key to Blaine's GYM
    -Defeated Blaine

    blainewin.png

    Update:
-Went with bill to One Island, defeated some bikers.
-Defeated Giovanni as 8th GYM Leader

    giovanniwin.png

    @Update:

    -Beat all elite 4 members.
-Lance's dragonairs proved useless and dragonite only made me use one full restore. His aerodactyl killed Charizard once though.
-Bruno wasn't tough but made me use some full restores.
-Beat my rival, the champion. His Blastoise was tough. I luckily only used one Max Revive because I did a critical hit with EARTHQUAKE. So yeah, lucky of not needing to use my other revive.

This was almost a solo run, since my team is:

All of these were around level 20, except for the LV 74 Charizard. The Gyarados was a HM slave with Strength, Surf and Rock Smash.
Gloom HM slave with Flash and Cut

    Fearow with Fly.

    CHARSUKE LV 74 Charizard
    Earthquake
    Slash
    Flamethrower
    Aerial Ace

    That's it.

  • Quick update: I gave up getting a Wooper. I'll just do this with the same team as last time. Maybe add a Dugtrio or something cool like Gligar. Beat the Sprout Tower and made it all the way to Azelea Town. About to go talk to Kurt about this Rocket problem.

  • If no one minds, I would like to ask a couple of questions about this challenge.

First, i don't think it matters whether its your first play through of a game, it might make it easier if it is not, but my first play through of black of white is going to be a water monotype.

Second, type is really up to you, you have 17 to pick from. Psychic would be fine, and you can catch ralts before the first gym in emerald, and abra not far after. (although since neither can learn any none psychic moves until later, dark types might give you problems, and i know some random trainers have nuzleafs) The type you use is really up to you, i've done all the first 4 generations each with water, ground and flying, all of which were very enjoyable. It's completely up to you. try for a type that has pokemon capable of learning many different move types.

Just signed up today, so hello all! ^^ I've decided to do this challenge because I've been playing the games since Yellow came out, so I have at least one of every gen. So, I'm gonna play Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Pearl, and either Black or White (will decide once they come out). I've decided to go at it using all electric types.

Hello everyone! My name is Peter, and I joined the PC just to do some Challenges.

I have been playing Pokémon games ever since Red&Blue came out here in Austria (Europe, a little country next to Germany). I also played Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, Ruby and Pearl, Diamond and Platinum.

So you could say I am not a newbie to the Pokémon games. I love the idea of monotyping through all games in a row, so I decided to join this challenge.

I already monotyped through Diamond with the Fighting type, once, but most of my team there was cheated in so it didn't conform with the rules here. The team also raped whatever enemy I put in front of it so it was even more boring than not monotyping ^^

So now I will do a
UMC Ground on the following games:

    1. Leafgreen (On GBA)
    2. Soulsilver (On NDS)
    3. Emerald (Emulator, Can't find my Ruby cartridge)
    4. Diamond
    5. Black (Once it comes out in german)

I decided to go with the newer games for the first two Generations because I just can't stand the sight of the older games anymore. I loved them at the time, and played them to death, but I just prefer the newer versions.

Please also note that I'm playing all these games in the german versions. I'll try to search for the english Pokémon and attack names most of the time, sometimes I might be lazy and translate them myself or just leave the german term. If you havea any questions or corrections for me, I'm always happy to learn!

I already started on Leafgreen and I'll give you all an update this week, time permitting (I'm a student and January is the busiest month of the semester, with exams all over the place).

I'm really looking forward to this,
    Cheers,
    Peter
