  • The console will be able to stream games to the controller screens and, interestingly, the report speculates that the power of the console could allow for it to provide a "virtualized console for each individual unit". We assume this means multiple users could each be playing a game on the controller screen - possibly even different and entirely unrelated games, via a single console.

It reports that manufacturing will be handled by Taiwanese firm Foxconn, which is expected to make its first shipments of the console in October. This, is says, puts its street release at mid-October or early November. Again, the report speculates that Nintendo may hold off on its release until early 2012 in order to amass a large stockpile of units and give developers more time with launch titles.

On the topic of tech specs, IGN backs up previous reports that it'll pack a "revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, not AMD's Fusion technology as previously believed," and will outperform PS3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor.

It also says the console's CPU is a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset much like the Xbox 360 but with a higher clock rate. It will be capable of pumping out 1080p visuals with the possibility of stereoscopic 3D support, but it's not thought to be a staple feature.

Looks-wise, the source says it'll be similar in size to the original Xbox 360, but will apparently "resemble a modernized version of the Super Nintendo (SNES)."
    https://www.computerandvideogames.c...-400-ships-in-october-possibly-called-stream/

This sheds a little light on the technical aspects of the console. It will apparently outperform the PS3's GPU. Now, I can't say I am impressed by this, considering the PS3 has been out for a good few years now. The question I want to know, is by how much will it outperform it?

I am interested by the possible concept of being able to play multiple games from one console, that is very interesting indeed. I am rather interested to find out more about this!

  • Whoa, this looks neat. And we were just considering finally getting a Wii, too . . .

Still, I agree with Fabio. Outperform the PS3? Whoop-de-doo. My desktop lamp could probably outperform the PS3. The numbers in the specs mean little to me, I must admit, but they look . . . impressive? I dunno, I'm not a huge gamer myself. They could be the specs for a SEGA Saturn or for a Microsoft console from 2050 and I wouldn't know the difference XD

On the whole, looking forward to more news on this.

  • Great start to the thread -___-

Well, the graphics will be as good as they are now for the PS3 and the 360, which is still good. But how long will it be before Microsoft and Sony release their new consoles that will, no doubt, be a lot more powerful.

Also, the price range is apparently $350 - $400.

Well, apparently I got warned for just posting a pic of a Dreamcast controller, so this time I'm using words: Ninty stole the controller idea from Sega.

  • Looks interesting, but can't say I'm crazy about the controller. I'll wait on more info to come through though! But I am liking that design...however it feels more like "I came after the Wii" and not "I'm a new console entirely" so idk. I hope that's not the final outcome. But even if it is, I like the design. I just don't want it looking like a Wii. Don't care much for the "better than PS3" stuff though. I am not one that cares about graphics. :B Just have good games, and I'll love whatever console you are.

Doesn't Nintendo own Sega now? They can't steal from themselves.

I'll just say this again; I don't believe the rumors. Being a stronger console than the 360 and PS3? It just doesn't sound right considering Nintendo would make very little profit, if any, on their consoles. More power to them if Project Cafe is that strong though.

Sega is still a third party company that develops for every system.

And that's called recycling, which I'm sure Nintendo does a lot of already.

This...and if Nintendo did own Sega (which would be somewhat weird, considering the Nintendo vs. Sega console wars), we wouldn't have had nearly as much trouble with getting Sonic (and co.?) into the Super Smash Brothers series. XD Such a scenario would be interesting, though, and it would help to cement Sonic's presence in future SSB games.

Anyway, here is an alternative conceptual design of the Project Cafe controller that was posted in the other thread:

Recently, ZeldaInformer has posted an image of a theoretical controller design that 01Net says is very close to Project's Cafe actual controller.

Project Cafe Controller - Conceptual Design 2

Source: Rumor: Project Cafe Mockup "Close to General Design" (ZeldaInformer)

I'll post more commentary later, but the second variation looks a bit...awkward to hold. The first mock-up looks a bit sleeker IMO, and much more comfortable gripwise, analogous to the PS3 DualShock controllers. Then again, I somewhat had doubts about the comfort of the Nintendo Wii's controller, and I love holding that thing. :)

i don't see it being something hard to believe, the 360 is 6 years old and this will technically be an 8th gen console, if it doesn't improve upon them it would actually be worrying. And considering the 3ds majorly topped the psp it would be a no surprise.
as far as how much it improves upon it, it doesn't matter. one thing that nintendo is finally doing right is getting 3rd party support. This will help them to get the attention of more 'hardcore' gamers and will result in seeing games that were only on 360 and ps3 coming to a nintendo console. we may even see more 3rd party exclusive games.
also on a sidenote microsoft have stated that they wont release another console until 2015. kaz from sony has also said that ps3 has just hit middle age, meaning a ps4 is not likely to come out soon either. if the cafe comes out in 2012, this gives nintendo a huge head start into the next generation and gives them the chance to develop good roots with other developers before the other 2 can get on the scene.

Personally I don't like the sound of all the features..But of course, they're all rumours. And I mean, I didn't like the sound of the 3DS before the big unveiling at E3, and now I think it's a little genius sent from god. So I'll probably be converted with this as well. Nintendo can do no wrong in my Fan-Boy eyes.

  • I like the design, but as big as the original 360? That seems a bit too big, I thought they would find a way to make it fit in a small space. And the second controller mockup bothers me a lot, I feel like it would break if I hold it.

  • I'm looking forward to this, especially because I read one that on of the Nintendo execs said this won't be happening anytime soon and it is! Since I didn't get the Wii, I'll definitely be getting this, that is to say if it has motion control and is family orientated. Regardless of the starting price :)

Looking forward to official announcements. I'd be willing to bet that the system is about on par with the PS3, or slightly superior. Big jumps are unexpected for me.

A touchscreen on the controller doesn't seem so strange. Configurable "buttons" and stuff seem like a good idea, and hopefully it'll swing that way. This whole thing could be really good or really not, and the controller will determine a lot of that.

  • 2012 release date... Seems to fit in with the way Nintendo consoles have a 5 year life span. Course, that means that when Microsoft and Sony release their 8th gen consoles in 2015/2016, Nintendo should be starting the 9th generation in 2017.
Also, considering what Satoru Iwata said at a 3DS press conference in the fall of 2010, do you think Nintendo will be using 3rd party developers a lot more?

  • Thanks for that video dude!
Well, I knew it would be at E3 so I can't wait to see it. Not because I might buy it, but just for curiosity.
If that controller is what it is like, I don't really like it! :/ It looks weird and I can't imagine that it is comfortable to hold. However, that said it could just be a fake and Nintendo are normally good at making 'nice to hold' controllers, IMO.

  • I fell for terrible gimmicks with the wii and paid the price.

Certainly not doing it this time, now my eyes have opened this console just looks stupid. If the remote with a screen is the real remote then this just sounds awful.

  • It'd better be fake but an early model seems more likely. The controller looks off, it doesn't match the color of the displayed prototype and seems looks like an edited bottom half of a 3DS, though I still like it. If the controller is the size of the 3DS's bottom half, it's useable :)

I'm really happy about this coming out. Again, I hope it has motion gaming for fitness and family fun since we didn't get the Wii. I also said we should because an HD would be coming soon, then I heard a Wii successor wouldn't come for quite some time, but we still didn't get a Wii xD I'll go and see the rumored specs. I would have liked the Wand and Nunchuck to stay also x)
