Once upon a time...
Long ago, in the 14th century, there was a woman known as Elizabeth. She grew up learning that everything should be treated as a competition. The more you won, the longer you lived. The more you lost, the less likely you were to stay alive for very long. Elizabeth abided by these rules, and competed in everything she did, from waking up to making breakfast to going to bed. And most of the time, Elizabeth won.
One day, Elizabeth was to meet a man of high social status for a possible marriage. After meeting with this man, Elizabeth wanted to be with him for the rest of her life. She said she'd die just to be with him. Little did she know how much truth was behind her words. You see, unbeknownst to Elizabeth her family, the man already had a fiancee. She was a jealous type, so one can only imagine how she reacted when she found out about Elizabeth and the marriage arrangement. In a fit of rage she broke into Elizabeth's house at night and cut Elizabeth's throat. To think, it was through competing that Elizabeth's life came to an end.
But the story has yet to finish.
Deal with the Devil.
Elizabeth's spirit became very bitter towards humanity, and so in the afterlife she met with a being who called himself "Amon". Amon made a deal with Elizabeth: She'd create a parallel carbon copy the size of what we know today as New York City and bring roughly 100 children over each week. The children would then be able to use a weapon and/or magic in a skillful manner. Elizabeth also made it so that they would be able to understand one another, no matter what language they spoke back home. It sounded like a great life for them, right?
Amon is the demon of Wrath. As anyone can imagine, there'd be a catch. The carbon copy, which Elizabeth dubbed "Phantasmagoria", sucked the life out of anything that lived. As a result, the children would die within half a year of their being there. However, if the children wished to live longer, they would have to kill another one of their own and drink their blood to replenish their life. The rules Elizabeth had followed when she was alive had become vital to these children. Of course, they would also die from lack of food and drink. But Elizabeth made it possible that there'd be enough food and drink for three meals a day, given that no one overeats or wastes it.
As for Elizabeth's role, she became something of a god, an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being who watched over the children. She decided that the children would call her "Mother". She picked children at random who fell along a specific age range, and brought them to Phantasmagoria. They had no say in whether they wanted to come or not. However, rather than have them be in another world without warning, Mother visited them in a dream. She would ask the children rather odd questions, and their answers determined their skill(s) and appearance. They would then wake up in a bed similar to theirs, only to find practically everyone wiped off the face of the planet. They'd also find in the palm of their hand a scale with the color of their choosing. This scale was the source of their powers, and would activate or deactivate them at the child's wish.
Now, if a child managed to live and made it to their 18th birthday, Mother would send them back home. They would return to the age they were upon arriving in Phantasmagoria, and wake up in their beds, as if it were all a dream...
Much shorter than the story.
You are one of the children Mother brought to Phantasmagoria. You answered rather unusual questions without any doubt and suspicious while you were asleep. Hopefully you answered each question wisely, for they may as well have determined your fate. Your goal? Kill to live, and live to kill. You can work alone, team up with a friend (or total stranger) or two, or team up with someone but plot to kill them for your own benefit. It's your choice.
However, be warned: After watching over Phantasmagoria for many centuries, Mother found herself losing her powers. In order to keep the world alive, she sacrificed her omnipresent and omniscient abilities and created a "daughter" to act as her eyes. No one knows her real name, only she and Mother do. This girl also acts as a "judge": If she feels like it, she will kill without warning. However, this rarely happens, as the girl prefers creating random events, an ability Mother gave her. These events usually require teamwork or sacrifice. The girl cannot be killed by mortals; only Mother can end her life.
