Name: Varik Umbra/Nilya Umbra
Age: 24 / 22
Gender: Male Human / Female Fox Faunus
Personalities:
Varik is a strong willed individual who follows his own self made path (and is proud of it). He does not allow others to dictate his choices and path for the most part. He has a dislike for authority and is a straight up renegade when it comes to dealing with society. Combine this rebellious streak with his temper, and willingness to defend his views violently, and its no wonder Varik has been in trouble with the law on many occasions.
Hidden behind Varik's stubborn rebellious pale eyes is a genius, who is frustrated with society. He sees the issue between humans and faunus as "stupidity that distracts idiots from the real issue of the Grimm, and other forms of evil that threatens our existence." He does not see the reasoning behind the racial divide, and will step in to protect faunus being attacked by humans for no good reason, and vis versa. His genius comes down to his set of inventions that use a mix of his own limited Semblence, and rechargeable energy cells. These devices allow him to put force behind his personal morals that he lives by.
Despite Varik's stubborn ways and general stubbornness, he will listen to the calmer Nilya. Nilya is the calm and collected especially compared to Varik. She keeps herself approachable and hides her fear and distrust of others behind a perfect fake smile. Nilya does share many of Varik's views on their society, but she is much less vocal about them. She often tries to step in to defuse Varik when he is about to get violent. However when a fight does occur Nilya's quick wit and abilities help keep the hotheaded Varik alive, and out of the law's reach.
His obvious flaws often makes it questionable why Nilya would be interested in him. Varik has a gentle caring side of him that he hides from most of the world. Toward Nilya he is kind and gentle (sometimes to the point it annoys her), and works to try to improve her life. Seeing her pain due to the cruelty of humanity toward her and her kin has affects him deeply, and while he still holds onto hope that the world can improve, he has become increasingly hostile toward human authority.
Nilya's personal goal of peace often collides with Varik's sense of justice and his hatred of the Grimm. Her deepest desire is for her and Varik to just disappear together, and live a happy life away from a world that hates them. She hates the fighting as she fears Varik will get himself killed, or arrested and locked away. Her loyalty to Varik often appears as her being clingy to him, but she does not need him as much as he needs her. Varik will not deny if it was not for Nilya's calming nature and quick wit he would have been dead years ago due to his rash nature.
Appearance: (art is not mine)
Varik:
Standing at six feet tall, Varik's frame is mostly hidden behind loose fitting clothes and light armor plates. Thin plates of black composites allow him minimal protection, but also give him maximum flexibility. These plates are sown onto his black khaki pants and light gray long sleeve shirt. Over this shirt he often wears a well used brown reinforced leather jacket with tall collars to protect the sides and back of his neck. Over his right shoulder is a small crude dark red cape that comes to a tattered end right below his knees. On his back is a black metal back pack that is permanently part of the jacket.
He is clear shaven (upon Nilya's demand) with short mud brown hair that always looks like he just woke up from a nap. His unkempt roguish features continue with his with his sharp and rugged facial structure that is decorated with various small scars and one set of large scars on his right cheek that look like claw marks. A strong jaw line fits his stubborn personality. His pale blue eyes lack dramatic coloring and from a distance blends in with the white of his eyes giving him an unsettling look for many.
Nilya, in contrast, favors wearing well kept beautiful clothing that is brilliant in color. Her dress varies, but she prefers loose fitting kimonos over more fashionable clothing. Nilya's dark purple haired tail with the tip changing to a jet black (often not noticeable) and fox like ears would give away her identity as a faunus if it not for her hiding them. Her extremely long hair is often done up in a elaborate manner that she adds to by decorating her hair with local flowers, jewelry, or other objects of beauty. This serve a practical purpose as well since the air tends to camouflage her ears (that she lays flat). She does not wear much make up, and in confident in her natural beauty. Her well cared for fox tail is rarely seen due to her hiding it behind her kimono and tying it to her waist or leg to insure it does not show due to her long loose clothing. Hiding her identity in these manners makes her uncomfortable. Thus she has recently resorted to using her illusion abilities to make these features invisible instead of taking such uncomfortable measures.
Her more refined appearance, and short stature that barely stands above five feet to the tip of her fox like ears makes her seem fragile compared to the rough Varik. This illusion is false as Nilya is in many ways tougher than the large warrior she travels with.

Semblance:
Varik has no idea what his semblance is, but he uses it every day. His semblance enhances (mainly) the right side of his brain allowing him to process information at an incredible rate. This manifests itself in his high level of intelligence and understanding of scientific concepts. He is able to visualize equations and sometimes entire experiments accurately. It also enhances his brains ability to learn and store information. This is how he is able to invent/build his advanced technology.
Nilya on the other hand has continued to master her semblance abilities that primarily focus on illusions and deception.
Cloak of Darkness (Level 3) Nilya can wrap herself and others around her in a cloak of darkness that remders them invisable in low light. Currently she can project this ability on a single person 30 yards away or create a 10 foot "blanket" around her. This power is useless if illumination is high.
Mirror Object (Level 2): She is able to make a mirror images of people or objects to distract foes. Flawless in appearance, these illusions can move and talk like they are alive. However a single touch will give away the fact they are illusions.
Pillar of Darkfire (Level 1) Recently Nilya has learned how to use her powers offensively. She can lay down a ring of eerie black and dark purple magic with mysterious symbols inside it. The magic in this ring intensifies over the next few seconds until it becomes unstable and then erupts upward violently forming a pillar of black flames that deals a large amount of damage to anything that was in the ring. Nilya does not like using this ability as she prefers to not harm others. It is also easy to dodge, but if an oppenant does not exit the ring in time they will be in a world of hurt.
Weapons:
Varik: Twin energy blades (Level 3) War and Peace that are powerful but cannot be used for long periods of time due to their energy cell's limited charge (he does carry extras but changing in battle requires him to fall back): (image by The-Xie)
The energy on the blades are not the actual cutting part, instead this energy excites and destabilizes of whatever Varik strikes. Allowing the true blade hidden behind the energy to cut through the material like a sharp blade through butter without generating high amounts of heat.
The hilts of his swords also have controls hidden on them for controlling his teleporter.
His blades use specialized powercells that he can recharge out of battle. In desperate situations he can cause them to overload and use them like a small grenade. They are far too expensive/hard to build for him to consider this action unless it is his last option.
Varik's Teleporter (level 2):
Also he has a pack that allows him to teleport within line of sight. However this teleport requires a beacon to home in on a desired location without risking teleporting into an object. The teleporter itself is on his back and has limited energy before needing to recharge. The longer the jump the more power drain, and longer it takes before he can teleport again. It is mostly silent on arrival, but the device does make a whining sound as it prepares to teleport him. He can make a "quiet" jump but it burns additional power.
Currently his beacons are devices hidden in the hilt of throwing knives or in bolts launched magnetically by small gauntlets hidden under his jacket.
Nilya only has a dozen of Varik's dagger anchors to use as weapons, and she is unskilled at melee fighting. Instead she uses them to set up Varik for an attack by deploying them close to enemies, often using illusions to distract the enemy from the real threat.
Varik's H.U.D. (Level 1):
A small metal device that is found next to his right eye. It projects a small energy "screen" that allows him to easily locate and lock onto beacons with his teleporter. Without this lastest invention Varik discovered his teleporter sometimes locked on the wrong beacons when he was teleporting around

Leaning back against a moss covered rock, Varik stared up at the stars as Nilya took her time washing her hair. Unlike him, she was careful to keep up her appearance despite the fact most humans and faunus found reasons to hate them. "Will you be much longer?" asked the human not daring to look over at the purple haired woman as she washed in the small pond fed by a waterfall.
"I will be done when I am done," she replied in a soft tone that hid a layer of anger. Hearing any form of anger from her was unsettling to Varik, and it made him wince.
"I am sorry, but I could not stand by and let take you away," said Varik after a long uncomfortable silence.
"Why do you quickly jump to violence? I could have escaped using trickery. No one had to be hurt," replied the faunus.
"They were hurting you..." snapped Varik, his anger flaring as he remembered the various insults thrown at the pair.
"I am fine, you just escalated things worse than they needed to be," replied Nilya's calm voice. "This world will likely never accept us, but violence is not going to help your cause. Its not worth it to me if you are dead. I would prefer to be exiled and have to wait for you to find me than to lose you forever."
Varik noticed movement in his peripheral vision as Nilya took her clothes off the smooth rock he was standing next to. The human shook his head as he decided to not start this argument again. The pair was silent for several minutes as they rehearsed this new variation of a familiar discussion they often had in their heads. It would be Nilya who broke the silence as she walked in front of Varik after putting her clothes back on. The faunus wrapped her arms around the human gently and whispered, "I do not want to see you killed, but I also do not want you to become someone else by defying who you are. I love you Varik, and you are the one light I have found in this dark hateful world. I do not want to lose that."
Varik hugged Nilya back while placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head between her ears. "I love you too, and I want to make the world a brighter place for you. I am sorry I am fighting all the time, but I hate seeing such acts go unpunished... I will try to keep my cool next time and not immediately turn to fighting."
"You always say that," sighed Nilya pulling her head back to look up at Varik.
"And I always try," replied Varik as he leaned his head toward her.
"You need to try harder," whispered Nilya as she gently placed her lips on his. The two shared a loving kiss before disappearing into the dark forest.
