I still think the information would've leaked if Brock and Misty were returning for more than the two episodes. Maybe they'll come back again later on besides these two, but right now it's just the two episodes. I could be wrong of course, but I don't really get why so many are thinking this is gonna be a more than two episode thing.

The reason people, including myself, feel this might be more than two Episodes is the length at which this event is being promoted. The amount of press this has gotten dwarfs all past special events within the anime. Maybe it's their attempt at redeeming themselves over M20 but I wouldn't go to the trouble they've gone if these two iconic characters were only going to return for two Episodes. It'd be a waste of time and losing out on potential ratings/cash not to have them around longer.

It's getting heavy promotion because of it's significance. I just believe in taking things in what we know versus over-speculating.

The two episodes where probably made in conjunction to one another. It'll most likely be just the two episodes for now, the show runners probably have a couple of episodes already set in pre-production. And, considering everything from planning to production to other episodes in the pipeline, It'll be a while before we see them in the show again (Not 12 years long mind you XD). I have a gut feeling they're going to be recurring characters at least in the SM saga of the anime.

The school setting might be a tad cliche, but as I've stated before, the advantages of said setting can not be overlooked. We've never had Ash in one place before, not always on the move going out to different places. The older characters can easily be written back into the show (in minor/supporting roles), since they can easily visit Ash or vice versa.

If I recall correctly, for the dub of these episodes this will be Misty's first official speaking role in the TPCi dub, since the last speaking role she had was back when the anime was dubbed by 4Kids.

I'm not sure if she was in Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon though, which was that testing ground for the TPCi voice actors.

    She was.

I apologize for my guessing earlier, though in my defense, the translations weren't out yet that I saw when I posted it.

Saw the new preview, is it bad that I'm only hyped to see Jigglypuff back again?

And Charizard returning for Best Wishes, Dawn reappearing in the same series (which BTW wasn't even given any prior announcements in any way), May reappearing in DP, Misty reappearing twice in AG, heck, Ash even revisiting Kanto for the Battle Frontier (actually, scratch that, ESPECIALLY Ash revisiting Kanto for the Battle Frontier) isn't significant? Again, all of those were about as significant as this (ESPECIALLY Ash going to Kanto for the Battle Frontier considering it was the 10th anniversary of the franchise AND it being the first time in nearly 10 years that Ash spent a significant amount of time in Kanto), and last I checked, there's barely even a peep regarding that (in Dawn's case, there was literally no news about it, certainly not on Bulbanews), not to mention they barely even treated it as being Kanto even when they DID go that route, not having any real references to Ash's old adventures besides Viridian Gym, Misty coming back temporarily, or Ash's Kanto starters reappearing.

And either way, use common sense: If they were only doing two episodes, they'd risk spoiling all the episodes before they even air, and that would be pretty stupid.

The two episodes where probably made in conjunction to one another. It'll most likely be just the two episodes for now, the show runners probably have a couple of episodes already set in pre-production. The older characters can easily be written back into the show (in minor/supporting roles), since they can easily visit Ash or vice versa.

Perhaps recurring characters, though I'm still pretty sure that Misty and Brock, even if they are merely recurring characters (which in Misty's case would certainly be better than her being stuck in a gym since it implies she's resuming her Water Pokémon Master goal), aren't going to be dropped of with just those two episodes. For goodness sakes, with the amount they have teased as of late (and I strongly suspect that's not even the last of the promotion right now), they're risking spoiling the content of both episodes before they even air, especially when we've got less than two weeks before they air.

So far as the show, regardless of what advantages they might have, it's not changing the fact that Ash was short changed out of his goal, and besides which, that it's doing worse in ratings than even XY. Misty and Brock reappearing is probably the only real good to come out of this show (that, and the possibility of Ash's old Pokémon to be revisited).

I still think the information would've leaked if Brock and Misty were returning for more than the two episodes. Maybe they'll come back again later on besides these two, but right now it's just the two episodes. I could be wrong of course, but I don't really get why so many are thinking this is gonna be a more than two episode thing.

Technically, we don't even know of any episodes after these two at all, so we can't assume that they're only going to be there for those two episodes either. And as CodeHelmet pointed out, they're giving way too much promotion for Misty and Brock for it to be limited to just two episodes, ESPECIALLY considering that the prior special events such as the times Misty returned in AG, Ash returning to Kanto for the Battle Frontier, May and Dawn reappearing in DP and BW, respectively, and Charizard getting a reappearance in BW didn't get nearly as much fanfare as this (heck, in the case of Dawn, her reappearance literally was unannounced). And then there's the flashbacks to Misty and Brock dating from Kanto all the way to Johto. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Misty during AG, not to mention May and Dawn didn't get any flashbacks whatsoever when they reappeared. I definitely know Charizard got a LOT of flashbacks when he reappeared in BW, though, and he managed to return for the duration of BW.

She was in Mastermind, as the above user said. However, to be fair, we don't know if her TCPi voice from that special, or her TCPi voice from the Charizard flashbacks, will be reprising the role. They may pull a Giovanni and have Rachel Lillis reprise the role.

Saw the new preview, is it bad that I'm only hyped to see Jigglypuff back again?

To be fair, Jigglypuff arguably had been off the show for even longer than Misty did, so you focusing on it more than Misty or Brock's somewhat forgivable (I think the last time Jigglypuff appear was that Whismur episode back in AG.).

Rica didn't say that Ash had only been to Kanto prior to flying to Alola. She said that he had traveled to different towns, which could include Johto since it is right next to Kanto.

She probably wasn't referring to faraway regions since then her statement wouldn't have been controversial. Anyway, it's her headcanon, but strictly speaking it hasn't been contradicted yet. We'll see if non-OS Pokemon show up.

And they could always give Serena an XY-style special set in Hoenn if they wanted. I just don't think that she is a good fit for SM's style.

That's how I've viewed what the producers/casts have in their head- they see Kanto as being what came before the current season and the series inbetween are ignored in continuity and that's how Ash doesn't age and why there's little if any reference to other characters or happenings besides Kanto. I have no idea if it's correct or not, but it just seems like this is their mindset.

If that's indeed true, then what we have here is a clear case of the writers not knowing what the hell they're doing. Firstly in Episode 1 of the series, Ash is dropping off 3 Pokeballs(last I checked he had more than that when he returned from Johto but would make sense if he was returning from Kalos as Greninja and Goodra were released). Secondly, if Ash mentions anything with regards to Misty's Mega Gyrados and having seen one before, then we will know Kalos is canon and occurred prior to Sun and Moon(which also would have to be the case because otherwise this would be the first instance of Mega Evolution in the series and would conflict with the flashback in Episode 1).

I do agree though that the fanservice for Kanto is getting a bit much. Unless in US/UM you can travel to Kanto, I don't really see a reason for it(unless they intend to remake Generation 1 again... lmao).

Obviously, Johto is canon to SM as evidenced by Charific Valley and Larvitar in the flashbacks. And sure enough, Ash desposited five Pokemon by the end of Johto, which would be consistent with the SM flashback.

Of course, after Ash said goodbye to Brock and Misty (which is seen in another flashback), he decided to go to Hoenn. But in a new timeline, he could have decided to stay home for a while, leading to his vacation in Alola.

It's just a theory for now, but if none of the post-OS Pokemon are seen and Brock staying with Ash for Hoenn and Sinnoh isn't referenced, then it will have a lot more validity. Not to mention Ash's prior experience with Mega Evolutions.

Ahh my bad... I watched the first Episode late at night and haven't watched it since. I sure hope they don't have this alternate timeline crap or they place Sun and Moon prior to Hoenn or any of the regions he visits afterwards because then the writers have to explain the Mega Evolution bit. Ash had no clue what that was in Kalos and if Sun and Moon is indeed prior to Hoenn, then that would mean the XY Ash was being a retarded idiot when he had never seen Mega Evolution before when he noticed Misty and Brock have Mega Evolved Pokemon.

Unless of course we're dealing with a Zelda-like scenario with a split timeline... oh god no...

I should have said that the idea of the current series taking place directly after Kanto does have inconsistencies from time to time. It will be very interesting to see what they reference during these two upcoming episodes and if the dub will make the same references and callbacks that the original will.

Technically, Misty's Gyarados is non-OS, considering she got it AFTER she left, and we also know that Misty's definitely going to have Mega Gyarados there as well, meaning that AG most likely happened. And if Charizard is at Professor Oak's lab, we can safely assume that Best Wishes occurred as well, since Charizard last we saw of it was sent back to Charcific Valley. Heck, Brock having a Pokémon Doctor goal, as made VERY explicit in his character bio blurb in Televi-Kun, strongly suggests that DP happened since... well, he was still a Pokémon Breeder when he left and returned for AG, and didn't consider getting the doctor gig until he left in DP.

Not to mention Mega Evolutions not being a thing until Ash went to Kalos. Also, I just remembered something from Episode 33. Remember when Lana said she planned to fish a Mega Gyrados and Ash's face turned to "Ash" after she said she was joking? Ash would only do that if he knew what a Mega Gyarados was after having battled Lysandre's Mega Gyrados in XY. So unless we're making a big deal out of nothing right now, Sun and Moon should take place after all previous generations(it just doesn't make sense for Ash to return 5 Pokeballs if he let Greninja or Goodra go... there be the inconsistency unless he never really released them in the first place?)

That irks me, since Goodra and Greninja are no longer owned by Ash. So, he should have not taken their Poke Balls back with him.

Anyways, regarding this topic PokemonRangerBoy12 posted a new video about his thoughts on Brock and Misty's return and why he feels it was needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIKxHiKyGIM

To sum up PRB: We needed a vacation from a vacation.

He did mention that there is a danger of them focusing solely on the old companions and leaving the other five in the background. That being said, all the rumors swirling about this series might be put to rest if we see a couple things: 1) Non-Kanto Pokemon belonging to Ash and 2) Them explaining how Brock and Misty acquired their Mega stones in the first place.

As PRB said in the video, Alola was a region that became boring too quickly. Both the game and anime fans agreed together on that.

But yes, like you I am also concerned about the writers being biased towards Brock and Misty and therefore shove the Alola group into the background. I have concerns about nostalgic fanservice and how much it gets overdone when it comes to pandering of Kanto in Pokemon media.

You guys are over thinking things again... occam's razor guys.

1st: It's true that he did drop off five pokeballs back in the lab flashback. Yes he did not have greninja and goodra team. BUT it could simply been a animation error, or that he dropped off a completely different set of Pokemon, we don't know what Ash did in the time in between XY and SM (Since, unlike the previous Sagas, Ash doesn't immediately go off to another region, he goes home, with no mention of his next adventure.) he could've used a completely different set of pokemon for all we know.

2nd: We know that this directly follows XY (or Bw at least) because of Pikachu's move Electro ball.

3rd: This is a kids show, I dont think that the Studio wants to confuse their target audience with a prequel sequel saga

That is what I think as well. The writers only care about promoting Kanto and no other previous-gen regions, hence causing a lack of continuity with AG/DP/BW/XY. I know when the writers make bad decisions which won't resonate well with fans, and the promotion of Kanto is clearly becoming a huge problem.

The games overdosed with Kanto pandering, such as the player character's old home and the Alola Forms all being Kanto Pokemon, coupled with 1st Gen taking up the most slots in the Alola Dex, ahead of the 7th Gen Pokemon.
