Well, that's what I'd meant- repointing in general screwed it up. But, thanks for actually elaborating, it seems a breakthrough has been achieved with our team only being a few days old.
When you mention the free-space actually being FF's, it got me thinking- Ruby and Sapphire use 00's, and FRLG use FF's. I remember reading somewhere that Emerald actually used Fire Red as a base (much like HGSS used Platinum as a base). Unless I went wrong somewhere there, that could explain/hint to why Emerald actually uses FF's and not 00's.
Nothing new to me, actually. It's just I never really been into Emerald hacking to the point of caring about those 00s. I think I will just make it so XSE and co. won't use 00 as free space byte by default for Emerald.
You know, Emerald is unstable. LOL

Well, if every hack suffers from that problem, couldn't it be all the people doing the same mistake(s)? I know it doesn't seem very plausible, but the clean ROM don't have such problems, after all. All I can think of right now would be using 00s as free space, rather than FFs, and/or treating some of them as free space when they're not (could be due to AM automatic repointing, which is enabled by default).
    Oh, right, I get it.
The tiles, you know, were actually pretty good. The only one I'd think about is... *drumroll, please* the tree, but that's because I'm used to seeing hacks use taller trees, as opposed to round ones. Maybe look at the FRLG one, tweak around with that, a bit. If you look closely to the HGSS Kanto tree, it has a similar pattern to the FRLG Kanto tree, around the middle. I dunno if that means anything ^^'. But I thought all the other tiles were fine, really.
That's an interesting idea. Are you trying to make a better continuity between all the games, yeah?
Hm, you're going to remap it all? Why not just import them from Emerald? Lazy, sure, but that Forest map took ages, didn't it:D?
Well, I'd meant that repointing compressed images was one way to corrupt sound, not the only way. In my restarted project, I reached a grand total of three different backups, and the sound is corrupted again. I think I'll have to switch, as well. Although, as of now it's not too serious, and is only in one song- the GS Saffron theme. But no doubt it'll spread, so.. I have to switch, if I want immaculate sound.
Seriously though, it's wierd and annoying that it does that. Everything else is fine, with Emerald. I'm going to look at voice groups and such, and compare between a clean and edited Emerald Rom, see what I can get from that..
How's the restarting going, are you catching up to where you were quickly enough? (not that it's a huge priority, of course).
i know, i used to hack emerald, But everytime i made major changes,Like inserting Lots of lots of tiles, Animation,Titlescreen,BattleBakground etc. The the game Crashes, I know i did it right,But its realy unstable :( so i prefer firered or ruby :P
Sorry, logged off when you asked that. I'll show you later, I'm not at home right now.
But, after I logged off yesterday, I tried something, on my own hack. I transferred everything I'd done on my hack (map/tile wise) to a new, clean, expanded Emerald Rom. I inserted all the maps I had done, all much bigger than the maps they were replacing. I'd also applied a patch that put in FR Overworlds. (actually, I left out two maps, that I don't plan to use)- but anyway, the only thing that separates this Rom from my previous is that I didn't insert any sprites, Pokemon or Trainer. And, the sound is perfect. So, when inserting stuff with unLZ, repointing must mess up with the voicegroups. It's definately one of the things that does it, anyway. So I'm going to keep going on this, and keep track of everything I do. Then, if I find out what exactly is causing the sound errors, and how to stop, I'll post here.
Anyway, yeah, I'll send a screenshot when I get a chance.
I couldn't actually access Viridian, btw. I couldn't cross the gatehouse without sliding somewhere, then I was warped back to route one somehow :/
    Yeah, playing it now...
The keychanges are really nice, keep those:D
Um, the gatehouse leading to Viridian is... Seriously glitched. Have you tried, just in case it's my Rom or something (which I doubt). Not that it matters, since you're switching. But see for yourself what happens, lol. I can't actually pass through it from the glitches- the tiles make me slide around the place (not to mention they're visually glitchy), and one warps me back to Route 1, haha.
    Ah, right. Well..
If I recall, you said you wanted Advance-Style overworlds- ie, the RSE ones. But, in my time hacking Emerald, I've grown to dislike them. So, in my little collection of custom bases, I've a patch for both Ruby and Emerald with FR Overworlds all inserted. If you want, I'll give you them, but.. If I recall correctly, you wont :D.
Well, Ruby could be pretty interesting to hack, so good luck with that. I'll likely end up doing that if my hack fails on Emerald.
Have you started on it yet?
Cool, that's the spirit to have :D
I think, for the sake of your sanity, you should make numerous different backups, at various stages in the game- ie, have one that goes as far as Brock, the next going to Misty, etc. Though maybe even more frequent than that, just in case. Unfortunately with Emerald, there's no way to know if it'll still screw up, so... If it does, with alot of different backups you'd be able to see what caused it.
Anyway, I'm glad you're thinking of sticking to Emerald- it'd be worth it, if it works out (which, hopefully it will).
Edit: Damn it, noticed bottom line..
Well, anyway, if you chose to continue with Emerald, then I guess.. Be careful. But... Although I'll defend Emerald to the last, if you want it to be glitch free, then Ruby would be the way to go, I guess :/
    Read it now.
Emerald's glitchyness sucks- that same problem led me to restart my hack. Even the sound for the door animations became messed up. It's totally random.
Have you tried expanding the ROM? I've done that with mine, and although the glitch happened again on some (but only some) of the voicegroups, nothing has worsened, at least for the last month or two, where alot of maps and changes took place.
If you expand the Rom and make constant backups, you may not have any problems with Emerald's sound.. But, good luck with whatever you do. You've got a supporter in me ;)
Hang on, I just saw your signature- I didn't know it was being restarted, I just assumed you'd taken a break.
Can I ask why you're restarting?
Hm... I thought I'd replied to your last VM, sorry about that :(
Anyway, that's cool :D I got a few database errors yesterday when trying to view PC in general, like when the servers are down- but it seems fine now, so maybe just keep trying? Looking forward to see more updates- after playing Heart Gold (which I think is actually awesome) you've probably clearer ideas about things, so... Interesting :P
Oh. Right then. Well it was a while ago, and I didn't check back when I commented here, so... Yeah ^^'
Ah, cool. Did you enjoy it? Mind me asking how old you are?
In response to your last message... Cool.
(nothing else really to say bout it, lol)

As you probably saw me say several times throughout the forum, I'm hacking Emerald. The same thing has happened to my hack, and I doubt there's a way to fix it. I think it's something to do with the amount of free space, or something? Although it happens for random reasons (for example, since I restarted my hack, the only thing I've done that would use up space in the Rom is increase map sizes. I've inserted plenty of new tiles and Overworlds, but nothing that involved writing to a free offset.) Anyway, the "corrupted voicegroups" still cropped up. I've never heard of a way to fix it- the only other person I've heard mention it (someone in the Pokemon Shining Silver thread) said the only way to avoid it is by making alot of backups, and be careful what offset you write to. But I believe there must be some sort of proper explanation for it, and hopefully, some sort of solution. Although my hacking knowledge is pretty limited, so.. Yeah, that's all I can say ^^'. Maybe posting a thread in the Research thread would bear more fruitful results, might attract a few of the experts or something...
Oh, I see. So you're ditching the post-E4-quest Fire Red had, then. Although if you don't face Team Rocket there, then does that mean the game basically ends once you defeat the Elite 4? (Obviously there'll be the side quests you mentioned, but the story is over once you beat the E4?)
Hi, I've just been thinking about something... Since you'll be making Kanto as it is in HGSS.. What about the Sevii Islands? Will you just be basically porting them from FR, or will you revamp them any? There's no real need, I suppose, but I was just wondering.
Mhm. I've heard about the fix working on R/S as well, on those carts. The main problem is porting the fix, I guess. Whenever I have time I might look into it. If you got any IM account such as MSN/AIM/YIM/ICQ, it would be a good idea if you give it to me.
