It takes more than a transformation sequence to make a show a magical girl anime. If it didn't, you could call Kill la Kill one, which it most definitely is not. I like tragedy and drama in anime, but only when it's done right. When it comes to tragedy and shock value, one moment has far more impact than dozens of moments strung together. I stop feeling anything if it's piled up constantly; it loses all meaning and the characters don't really grow as a result of it. With Madoka, if they had stopped with episode 3 and given the characters time to process it and the impact it had, it would have been a better show. Instead, they moved right along and just kept on piling on the misery, and it lost all impact. Misery for the sake of misery does not make good viewing.
I watched the Danganronpa anime before I played the game, but I get where you're coming from, aha. The games are stage based with a few cutscenes in between like Dynasty Warriors, so the character development for the main characters is actually about the same. Judge End fails a bit because there are just so damn many of them, but the first two seasons are great for it...and the movie is just plain crazy. Did I mention how good the OST was? This is Nobunaga's theme. xD
Oh? Which anime have you seen that you couldn't stand? I'm curious :3
