One Piece's anime is too slow. It gets awkwardly slow after marineford. Like, ridiculously slow. Which is why I shifted to the manga after that. I'm a manga only reader now. And pretty happy with it. :p
But yeah, true that. Oda does incorporate a lot of serious themes into the story. Of course, he has to cover it up massively to not make it a tragic seinen (manga/anime for older audience) but it still does retain quite a bit of its darkness despite possessing a goofy side at all times. Which is why a lot of people, including me, can appreciate it. I mean, sure, you can enjoy it as a kiddy adventure tale. But it isn't just that. It is more. Much more. :)
Oh, and I watched Nagi no Asakura just a few days ago! Brilliant art and animation (seriously!) and the story kept me hooked. I finished it in two days haha. Thank you for the recommendation, Jo! <3
