Well, it aired on major NA channels back in the late 1990s (I'd say about 1998 ish). I remember watching when I was about 5 years old. Though you'd be 2 years old, so I'd assume your memories don't go back as far as Kanto (Orange Islands?).

If you insist on calling him Gary, the other one is Ash, not Red. There is an unspoken and very sacred relationship between the two that cannot be severed.

Well, the original story is so absurd that the prequel's story has to be a stretch from expectated storylines. Anyways, I think this is good (though it was Green vs Red not Gary :P)

Reminds me of that story of the scientist who discovered some math thing in the shower and ran around naked (I forget who and what he discovered, therefor it must've been something simple :P).

A serious prequel, I'm not sure if that's possible for a hack that has everthing as charizard to be honest. What do you have planned?
