  • That's interesting to know. I wonder why they scrapped Johto if it really was being planned for RSE? It's easy to assume that it's the lack of connectivity, but on the other hand, wouldn't that have made Johto even more necessary (since it could've easily filled the Hoenn Dex's gaps)? It's also possible that like FRLG, RS were made in a rush, and these things were scrapped due to time constraints.

If you ask me, I kind of wish RS had turned out like this. GSC would've gotten their sequels, and we would've been spared from poorly-done Gen 1 remakes. Plus, I think having Johto in the postgame may have softened the blow from the compatibility cut. It would've reassured people that the franchise wasn't rebooting and that the previous games still existed, despite the lack of compatibility.

Yeah, that's probably fanon, although it does make a lot of sense. I'd like to see references to this in a future Gen 1 game. (Hell, it should've been in HGSS, themselves.)
Oh, and I don't know if you know this, but the GBA wasn't supposed to have the short lifespan it had. I heard Nintendo wished for the DS to be a parallel line to the Game Boy devices. But the DS was so well received that they ended up killing the GBA and focusing on the DS instead.
I had this idea in older gens. I think even Drayano in his hacks didn't give him ES (IIRC Pidgeot is basically a bulkier Staraptor in his hacks).
    Those names are fine.

Well, the Sevii Islands wouldn't have been a part of Kanto if they had been introduced in RSE.

However, I would've preferred revisiting Johto, myself. GSC deserved their own "3 years later" sequels, and May/Brendan actually moved to Hoenn from Johto in canon, anyways; we could've learned what their hometown was.
The Blue/Yellow/Red Orbs have nothing to do with the Weather Trio (who wouldn't be in the game at all). They are based on the orbs from the second movie which summon Lugia when placed together. The idea was to merge the plot with the games'--Instead of Lawrence III, the villain is Archer, and instead of Shamouti Island, it's an expanded Navel Rock (Ho-Oh would be placed elsewhere).

Archer wants to summon Lugia to catch the attention of and impress Giovanni (who went missing after being defeated at his Gym), and he, along with Ariana, Petrel, and Proton have stolen the Orbs from the three smaller islands surrounding Navel Rock. (Later on, you can find the Mega Stones of Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres on those islands, as well as the Pokémon, themselves, if you didn't catch or defeat them in Kanto.)

So, you like my story? I think I'll go repost it in the Gen 1 remake thread.

Which is why RSE should've had a second postgame region. There was nothing stopping them from putting either the Sevii Islands or even, Johto in RSE, where all of the non-Hoenn Dex Pokémon could've been easily placed. Gen 1 remakes weren't needed.

Well, 2006 would've marked the 10th anniversary of the original games, and 2008 would've been the 10th anniversary of JP Yellow, Int Red/Blue, and the start of Pokémania, so who's to say that they wouldn't have remade Gen 1 for that occasion? Plus, GB/C compatibility was lost with the DS (the GBA could still play the old games, even if they couldn't trade with RSE), so it literally wouldn't have been possible to play Gen 1 (or Gen 2) anymore, which is a good enough excuse for a remake on its own.
Yes, HGSS and ORAS follow the two console later pattern, but FRLG doesn't. You can see this in the fact that unlike HGSS and ORAS, the games can be played on the same handheld as the originals and less than 10 years separate RBY from FRLG.

The GB/C was a very long-lived handheld (mostly thanks to the success of Pokémon), so it straddles both the 4th and 5th gaming Generations.

Face it, FRLG were made too early and should've been done on the DS.
Not by Nintendo, as they combine the sales figures for both. Plus, they made GB games that were "enhanced for the GBC," while there never any GB/C games that were "enhanced for the GBA" or DS games "enhanced for the 3DS."

Most people who argue for the GBC being a separate handheld do it to justify Gen 1 being remade less than 10 years later for the GBA instead of 10+ years later for the DS (as it should've been).

That could work. A Yellow remake would be a great way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary.
Yeah they even fight over who's better in HGSS! :P

As for Bugsy, he's probably not much older than the protagonist. I mean, he IS a Bug Catcher on steroids, after all.
Well, I've been saying "3DS" since we don't know what its successor will be or when it will come out. The "New 3DS" appears to be another updated re-release akin to the GBC and DSi instead of a completely new handheld, and both the GBC and DSi had around 2-3 years before their successors came out (which means that we should see the 3DS's successor around 2017-18).

Based on that, Gen 7 will probably be on the 3DS (either for the New 3DS or regular 3DS with New 3DS-enhanced features), so if Gen 1 remakes happen then, they'll also be 3DS games.

    I'm down with doing that.
You don't have to do much replacing, actually. Since Kanto takes place only 3 years before Johto, I think only Falkner, Bugsy and Whitney, maybe Jasmine, could be replaced. Falkner could still be the leader, or an enemy you could fight, but I'd like to know his father since it's a big part of Falkner's character. It doesn't make sense to replace the others IMO.
Which is one reason why they were made too early. And, it was mostly GSC that had issues with dead batteries; RBY lacked internal clocks, so their batteries drained much slower (my Yellow and Blue carts still work to this very day).

And, as I've said before, the missing Pokémon could've easily been added within RSE through a secondary postgame region (such as the Sevii Islands or Johto). Remakes were unnecessary.
Well, Yellow was already released on a GBC-enhanced cartridge (outside of Japan, that is), the same kind of cartridge GS used. So Yellow, at least, actually was capable of going full color (but was left monochrome for consistency with RB).
Don't like that idea. Sorry. :sideways:
Well, you have to remember that the Gen 6 games are international releases now. There's no longer a several month gap between Japan and the rest of the world, so I'd expect them to be closer together.

With Gen 5, though, I do agree that they made a mistake in trying to cram it into the very end of the DS' lifespan. If they had waited just 1-1.5 years, they could've released it for the 3DS instead.

(Plus, as a Gen 2 fan, I sort of dislike how BW robbed the spotlight from HGSS so soon after the games were released. I think the first BW footage was released, like, a month after the US got HGSS. WAY too soon!)
I have some news that will probably reassure you about Kanto probably being remade in the future. A lot of the people who are posting recently on the sinnoh remake thread (thanks for making it relevant again ) are saying Kanto remakes should come first (likely in response to you)! So it seems Gen I remakes have some momentum after all [IMG] (only one person said no thus far).

You're welcome, Omega Ruby and Aplha Sapphire. (Did you ever get to my "Forgotten Characters" thread, by any chance?)

That's good to hear. It's nice to see that so many people here get my point and realize that *all* of the previous Gens should be available on the 3DS before *any* Gens that already are can get remakes. Here are the Gens that can be played on the current hardware:

Gen 2 (HGSS), Gen 3 (ORAS), Gen 4 (DPP), Gen 5 (BW/2), Gen 6 (XY)

Notice anything missing? Yes, Diamond and Pearl *are* pushing 10 years old, now, and they lack the many things Gens 5 and 6 brought to the table, but you can still play them on a 3DS. Have fun trying to jam either RBY OR FRLG into your 3DS.
My issue with Third Versions is that, more often than not, they were basically what the paired games were supposed to be, and thus, served as an excuse to make the paired versions more watered down and incomplete.

The cleaner graphics, harder Gym Leaders, and glitch fixes from Yellow should've been in RB, and the gender selection, animated sprites, Battle Tower, and expanded story from Crystal should've been in GS (HGSS, at least, fixed this one). The animated sprites, harder Gym Leaders, Battle Frontier, and Event Pokémon from Emerald should've been in RS, and the expanded Dex, nicer graphics, glitch fixes, VS sprites, and Battle Frontier from Platinum should've been in DP. The release of a third "director's cut" game that's virtually the same as the previous two games that people already spent money on was never anything but a shallow money-grubbing ploy, and I'd be glad to see it phased out in favor of sequels.

That's the idea. RBY, GSC, and RSE would've formed a trilogy of sorts for the original timeline, with the DS games hitting the reset button. The holes in the Hoenn Dex would've been filled within RSE with a second postgame region (either the Sevii Islands or Johto) instead of rushed Gen 1 remakes.

As for DP's framerates, I've generally read that they're extremely slow, and that this issue was fixed in Platinum and HGSS.

I'll try. I'm indifferent to Sinnoh, so I've been mostly staying out of that thread.
You seem to really dislike B2W2 (or the idea of sequels, in general) for some reason.

I gave DP sequels instead of a Third Version for better parallelism with FRLG and HGSS, since they would now be part of the same Generation. Otherwise, HGSS would feel kind of awkward, taking place at a different time than the rest of the Gen. All of the biggest updates Platinum implemented (expanded Dex, better framerates and graphics) could easily be implemented in sequels.
Oh, I don't doubt that. While I know that they probably didn't anticipate on the GBA being so short-lived, they still just didn't have nearly enough time to make all five games in the span of just 1.5 years (especially since Gen 3 had to be rebuilt from scratch, unlike Gen 2).

To put it in perspective, development on GS began in 1996, a full three years before the games were released. That's more than the entire timespan of the Gen 3 games.

BW, on the other hand, had the misfortune of coming out right on the eve of the 3DS's release, so the entire Generation was stuck on a dying handheld. Luckily, though, they didn't try to cram remakes into this Gen, so it wasn't quite as bad as Gen 3.

About a month ago, I posted this idea of how Gens 3-5 could've gone with better planning (JP release dates shown):

    Generation 3 (GBA):
    - Ruby & Sapphire (2002)
    - Emerald (2003)

    Generation 4 (DS):
    - Diamond & Pearl (2005)
    - FireRed & LeafGreen (2007)
    - Diamond 2 & Pearl 2 (2008)
    - HeartGold & SoulSilver (2010)

    Generation 5 (3DS):
    - Black & White (2011)
    - OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire (2012)
    - Black 2 & White 2 (2013)

Since the DS was such a long-lived handheld, I decided to stretch out Gen 4 and save Gen 5 for the 3DS instead of awkwardly trying to cram in BW/2 at the very end of the DS' lifespan. With more time for Gen 4, that meant I could split it into two parts--DP/FRLG and D2P2/HGSS. (Platinum would be scrapped, altogether.) DP and FRLG take place at the same time, while D2P2 and HGSS take place three years later. ORAS gets bumped up to Gen 5 and takes place at the same time as BW, while B2W2 take place two years after both.
I get where you're going with that one (names based on the inaccurate elemental attacks), but it sounds a little clunky.

Oh, yeah. That's where I got "ThunderYellow" from. ;)
For Yellow, I've always liked "ThunderYellow" best. A friend of mine at another site came up with "InfernoRed" and "SolarGreen"/"HydroBlue" for paired games. You can see our discussion here, if you're interested.
