My guess: Lapis, based purely on her power and color-scheme, was a member of Blue Diamond's Council at one point, just like Sapphire. If she's an "emotional manipulator", maybe she tried usurping the throne from Blue Diamond at one point. In short, she did something to piss off Homeworld. They trapped her in a mirror, banished her to Earth, Crystal Gems took it, and the rest is history. She breaks out, etc. etc.

I'm not sure. I think you may be giving Rebecca Sugar too much credit. Inconsistencies are prone happen. You're probably just reading way too much into it. Rebecca just didn't think things through to its entirety.

But BW is one of the best plotwise, though not so much gameplay wise since it had a weak postgame. It's still margins better than XY's but... still... ;-;
