Really? I think the characters in Gen VI are no where in different, they all have big heads! Gen VI stop mocking at Gen V! Hmm... Pot calling the kettle black! xD
Didn't think they were that old even when Gen V made their debut! RS is turning 11 years old in Japan this month! {XD} Gen III was the definition of ageless, in fact I just recently decided I can call RSE as old games after playing Gen VI! Don't mistake my words, doesn't mean they are not memorable, in fact its the opposite!{:3} RSE tried to strengthen the plot and involved legends like Kyogre and Groudon, then 2 years later Rayquaza. I'm aware that Crystal was the first game to include a legend , but RSE ultimately brought that to an another level. ^^
The colors, the mechanics and the game play, it's Gen III that brought the revolution and good changes. While Gen IV tried to further it in the battle aspect, moves getting categorize and as well as introducing insanely good moves like Flare Blitz, Wood Hammer, Draco Meteor, Leaf Storm which made battles even more fun than ever! :)
Gen VI was not that bad, really! I can truly see the efforts they poured. The battle framerates in Gen VI are assumed to be 30fps like its Gen IV cousin. :/ They obviously learnt their failure from Gen IV, they shorten the animation for most of the moves. :) Skating is as fast as running in Gen III, but nothing beats the Mach Bike's speed yet. {XD}.
After playing Gen VI myself... Here are my favorite in order:
Gen III > Gen V > Gen II > Gen I > Gen IV > Gen VI
Yes, you are not seeing things -- it's Gen VI as the least favorite. But of course it's different when it comes to region. ^^
