Yeah, but unlike previous uni years, and like real jobs, I actually get money!
There are some marks for coursework that we have to do in physics at Sydney uni (some other places don't require coursework in phd), but much less across the three or so years than say in my honours year, thankfully, and I don't need to worry about getting the best marks possible. I have an exam this Friday in fact, which I can do as a 7 hour assignment (yes, it's weird). Hopefully that'll be my last ever assessment!
Otherwise no marks as such; the thesis has to be good enough to be approved by examiners when it's submitted, but otherwise I am left to my own devices in getting stuff done, along with my supervisors. And no, I don't just get extra money. =p I can get funding from organisations I am part of (e.g. CSIRO) for overseas travel for conferences though!
