Waaaaait, that's not Super Mario Bros.!

[PokeCommunity.com] Waaaaait, that's not Super Mario Bros.!

Have you ever seen, or played a video game look alike, or a clone before? What were those sorts of video games, and what were they clones of? How about systems; have you ever seen a video game system that was a clone of another? What did you think of those video game clones compared to the original? What do you think of the clones in general?

In my opinion Minecraft, Cave Story and Amnesia were rip offs of Lego, Metroid & Elder Scrolls. And blatant rip offs at that.

Well, Super Obama World, but you know...

I also used to think every other RPG was a ripoff of Pokemon.

Bonus points if you know what this game is called and the "original" game that this was cloned from. (Only takes a second of google image search, though)

You realize that "DavidtheDeadPhilosopher" described to you in great detail the differences between these games in your locked "Indie Games Suck!" thread and instead of acknowledging what he said you refused to click a few links posted by a member who has hundreds of posts and hasn't had any issues here and you started talking about games that ripped off movies instead of the topic at hand.

Lego vs Minecraft: The original physical Lego is similar to Minecraft because you build with blocks, but this is where the similarities stop. When I'm building with Legos in real life, is each block almost as tall as me? Do I need actual tools to get these blocks? Do I search for ores, caves, etc. in my Lego bin? Can I craft real things with them? Do I wear Lego armor and surround myself is a life size Lego castle to protect myself from zombies and skeletons? No I don't. Lego video games are even less similar. The console Lego games feature action/adventure style gameplay. There is no survival and there are actual levels. Where is the creation or freedom that Minecraft is all about? There isn't any. In the PC Lego games where you actually do create things, you can only see them from above as if you are playing God. You can't walk through your creations or interact with them, which is what Minecraft is all about.

Metroid vs Cave Story: Never played these games so can't speak for them, but DavidtheDeadPhilosopher gave his opinion on the original thread.

The Elder Scrolls vs Amnesia: The Elder Scrolls is a 1st person RPG game that takes place in open worlds where you interact with NPC's, complete quests, and fight with weapons. Amnesia is a 1st person survival horror game that takes place in cramped, nearly pitch black spaces. You have to light candles within the game or else your character goes insane and starts hallucinating. You have absolutely no weapons and have to hide from grotesque looking creatures. How in any way, shape, or form are they alike?

If you want you can say these games have similar features in your opinion, but a ripoff means more than that. A ripoff is a blatant or unscrupulous copy or imitation also known as a knockoff. You take an entire concept and brand it as your own. For example Mega Bloks is the true ripoff of Lego. You are more than entitled to your opinion of these games as I am to mine, however saying that they are blatant ripoffs is not accurate.

Well I can't guess the games name, but it's definitely a ripoff of Wolfenstein/Doom.

Final Fantasy and any fantasy RPG ever released can be called a ripoff of themselves. Whether it's for better or worse, they aren't going away and I don't mind some of them.

To me, every single racing game seems the exact same. No matter what company made them. I know there's not much more you can do for a racing game, but they are all way too similar.

What else do you expect from a racing game? ._.
Pretty much everything has been done, driving simulators, car modification, fantasy racing all sorts of games in between?

Syobon Action is a classic

This just seems like generalizing to me. Are platformers all the same to you too?

F-Zero GX is certainly not the same as Wipeout, for example, despite both being futuristic racing games.

also lol @ minecraft being a rip off of lego. and cave story being a rip off of metroid. and amnesia being a rip off of elder scrolls. Blatant rip offs, at that!

Yup, it is a ripoff of Wolfenstein 3D. In fact it's basically the exact same game with different sprites and music.

Rumor has it that id was unhappy with Nintendo censoring Wolfenstein 3D for SNES, so they handed over the source code to Wisdom Tree to make a mockery of Wolfenstein 3D, and there you have Super 3D Noah's Ark (name of that ripoff game). Again, it's just a rumor.

The article made me laugh. {XD}

Also Battlefield has been ripping off Call of Duty since the dawn of time. And Killzone isn't much more than a Halo wannabe.

^ Just because both of those games have better graphics than the games the steal from doesn't make them better or original.

I love Call of Duty, but since it came out does that mean nobody else on the planet can make a video game about war that lets you choose your own weapons and fight online? I'm a big fan of the Resident Evil series, but since it came out does that mean that nobody will ever be able to make another game featuring zombies? There's a big difference between making a game with the same genre and theme as another and ripping it off. Believe me I want to see more original titles just like I'm sure you do, but games, movies, tv, and music don't have to have absolutely nothing to do with something else to be considered original and fun.

Yeah, Playstation All Stars tried to rip off of Smash Bros. and it was a joke. Made me really salty....
I agree with the fighting game, although there is not really much you can do. All racing games and sports game have to be the same at the core level at least.

I really enjoy many an made rip offs though. SOme o them are actually really good!

Well Dragon Quest came before Final Fantasy, and even before that there was Wizardry. And before that there was Ultima. And that was based off of Dungeons and Dragons. So thank Gary Gygax for all of the RPGs you've ever played.

I think Blur is a copy of Mario Kart, but im not talking about graphics-wise, no its the gameplay. A race with powerups who have the same effects, with some slight differences and exceptions, and Blur added some extra things to it like being able to wreck someone if you did enough damage with your power-ups and a class system for their cars (which actually seems logical cause they use real-life cars).

...

Are you a troll or something?

First of all, Minecraft isn't a copy of lego. Ignoring the fact that Lego isn't a video game, I'd like you to give three reasons how Minecraft rips off lego.

Secondly, if you're saying Cave Story is a Metroid ripoff, then you may as well say the newer Castlevanias and are Metroid ripoffs for having similar gameplay styles. You might as well also say that the original Sonic the Hedgehog is a ripoff of Super Mario Bros. 3 because they are both platformers. Having the same style of gameplay is not ripping off.

Finally, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Elder Scrolls? Really? I've not played Amnesia, but it's a survival horror game. The Elder Scrolls games are open-world RPGs.

There were many different games that were clones/ripoffs back in the day.

Socket was a so called clone of Sonic, because of the High Speed Areas in the game, and other things.

Giana Sisters was a clone of Super Mario Bros, considering that Nintendo wouldn't release SMB onto the C64. I still like this game and it's DS release.

And not forgetting: Simpsons Road Rage, being a clone of Crazy Taxi. I still like both games here.

To me, every single racing game seems the exact same. No matter what company made them. I know there's not much more you can do for a racing game, but they are all way too similar.

I could say that about FPS games today. They all have the same god damn mechanics; I don't see any difference.
