YET ANOTHER POKÉMON STORY
A Johto/Kanto Adventure

Rated T
OOC
TitanPad

Johto. A land of adventure, history, and promise. Home to beautiful landmarks and scenery, Johto is a popular tourist attraction and an enjoyable place to live. There's even the nearby Kanto region, where you can explore as well.
The most popular attraction in not just Johto, but in most regions, is the Gym Challenge. Many trainers aspire to be "the very best, like no one ever was" as the legendary Kantonian pop singer, Jason Paige would say. But some trainers take a different path, whether it be Contests, Breeding, or just exploration.

But there's also evil in this prosperous country. Ever since two months ago, the infamous Team Rocket has risen from the shadows; stealing and selling Pokémon, even going as low as using them for experiments or for forced labor. No one really knows what their ultimate goal is.

ECRUTEAK CITY
The City Where History Flows!
The Journey Begins

Welcome to Ecruteak City. Home to many historical attractions such as the Kimono Dance Theater, The Burned Tower, and what most trainers come here for, The Ecruteak Gym. Sadly he's not here at the moment, he went to go take care of some business. In the meantime, you can go and train in the nearby routes if you like?

Places of Interest

The Ecruteak City Gym - While the gym leader isn't there at the moment, you could still scope the place out, right?

The Burned Tower - The ash and remains of a burned down, once-majestic tower, said to be the resting grounds of the legendary Pokémon Lugia and where Entei, Raikou, and Suicune were created.

Bellchime Trail - A relatively short trail connecting Ecruteak City to Bell Tower. With it's beautiful Autumn leaves that stay like that year round, it's a nice place for some people people to relax.

Bell Tower - A copy of The Burned Tower, but completely intact. It is said to be the resting grounds of the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. It is considered a place of high sanctity among people in Johto, and not everyone is qualified to enter it.

The Kimono Dance Theater - Where the Kimono Girls battle and dance. They put on shows every other night. Their graceful moves make them a famed group in Johto. Speaking of the Kimono Girls...

Missions and Events!

The Kimono Dancers are giving out an Eevee to trainers who can beat all seven of them in a row!
Spoiler:

Reward: I already said that it was an Eevee. (Level 5)

The Gym Leader is away? Someone should go look for him and bring him back to the Gym!*
Reward: None. Deal with it.

And back to the Kimono Girls. Sakura (not the anime one), the youngest and eighth Kimono Girl is missing! According to her sisters, she's been gone for hours.*
Reward: Heal Ball (x2), ¥500

*I think it would be best if you guys claimed the one man/one group quests in the OOC. The Eevee event is available to everyone.

ROUTE 37

Route 36 is a pretty small route with an abundance of unique Pokémon. Connecting Route 37 to Ecruteak, many trainers stop by here.

A cool breeze wafted through the trees as Arden took his first steps into Ecruteak. His feet ached and his calves burned from the physical exertion of traveling, but his spirits were high. This was the beginning for him. The change of scenery made it all begin to feel truly real. Thick forest surrounded him on both sides well into the city. Cara trudged along next to him, her expression unreadable behind her mask of bone. She matched him step for step despite her stubby legs, bone club dragging in the dirt and leaving a trail behind them. Arden, on the other hand, took in his surroundings with undisguised interest and excitement. His first stop was the gym. He picked out the brown-roofed building among the others and started in that direction. The entire city seemed to be based on traditional style architecture, something that didn't happen in the big city. It was beautiful, but the unfamiliarity made it intimidating. He swallowed hard as he approached the doors, only to stop short. They were locked and the inside was dark. For whatever reason the gym was not open. Arden felt a mixture of relief and disappointment. It was just as well anyway. Cara was still his only Pokemon. It would be unfair to ask her to take on a gym all by herself, particularly one that she didn't have a type advantage for. He turned and headed back into the forest. On the way here he had heard Pokemon in the trees, but he'd been so eager to get to Ecruteak that he hadn't stopped to see what he could find. He might as well add new members to his team while he waited.

Near the arch that separated route from city a harassed looking officer in blue was writing furiously on a notepad. Arden frowned and slowed; Cara moved closer to his side. "Everything alright?"

The officer looked up sharply. "You can go on through, but I advise caution. I just responded to the eighth fire this week out on Route 37."

Arden stopped and looked up over the trees with a frown. Sure enough, a thin tendril of white smoke stood out against the blue sky. "Why so many fires?"

"We don't know." The officer flipped his notepad shut. "Could be environmental, could be arson, could be careless campers. Just watch yourself out there."

With a quick promise to do so Arden passed under the arch. Though he wanted to hunt for Pokemon and he didn't want to run into whoever was responsible if it happened to be arson, he found himself weaving through the trees in the direction of the smoke. Lives could be at risk if the cause of the fires wasn't discovered. Ecruteak was surrounded by forest on all sides and most of the buildings looked to be made of wood. He could only imagine the destruction a true forest fire could cause. Besides, the Bell Tower was a sacred place. For it to go the way of the Burned Tower would be a tragedy.

Curiosity got the better of Cara as they were swallowed by nature. She wandered about, never too far from Arden of course, sniffing and picking at the ground. Arden moved as quietly as he could and kept his eyes open. He couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary—wait. He heard the gentle impact of hooves against soft forest floor. Arden's breathing quickened and he crept closer until he could see the silhouette of a tall antlered Pokemon in the clearing ahead.

A Stantler. Arden knew they were fast and flighty, as they should be after they were hunted almost to extinction. He motioned to Cara and pointed at it. Inexperienced as she was, she stared at him blankly for a minute before she understood. She shuffled close to it and suddenly launched herself at it head first. Her steely-hard skull connected with its side. It staggered on its feet, letting out a bleat of shock and pain. It recovered quickly. Instead of running away like Arden had feared it reared up and struck out at Cara with a cloven hoof. She dodged the blow and swung her club. It glared with large, fierce brown eyes. Cara shuddered and stepped back uncertainly. Stantler snorted and charged. It hit Cara head on and trampled over her. Arden gasped and hurried forward.

"Cara!"

The Stantler wheeled to face him and lowered its antlers. He backed away quickly, heart hammering. "Cara, Iron Head!"

Cara regained her bearings and rushed at the Stantler. She hit it hard and knocked it off its feet. Arden fumbled for a pokeball and threw one before it could stand. It was engulfed in red light and the ball hit the ground. It shook once, twice, three times…

And it stopped. Arden choked out a surprised laugh and hurried forward to pick it up. "We did it! Great job, Cara!"

She adjusted her skull and looked up at him with wide, affectionate eyes. He grinned and patted her head, more for the gesture than anything else considering she couldn't feel it. "We're on our way up."

Jason Elmwood // 16 // Chapter 1.1 - The Journey Begins
Jason stuck out his toungue as he concentrated on the computer screen. Inputting and programming. A function here, an array there.
Rose, his sister, and Riley, his Riolu, are already sound asleep in the bedroom; and here he was, clacking away on the keyboard. "Almost there" he told himself for the thousandth time, but this time he meant it. He was almost finished with what he called the PokéGauntlet, a tablet-like item attached to a long, fingerless leather glove, covering his entire forearm; when activated, the tablet displayed a holographic screen that displayed the data that he recorded. He looked at the clock at his timer.
Gosh, it's 1:30 already? Time really flies. he thought to himself. I really should get some sleep.
He shut everything down and climbed into bed and fell asleep instantly.

The next morning wasn't really eventful. Jason got up, made breakfast, packed his backpack and left for work.
On the way to Professor Elm's Laboratory, Jason heard rustling in his bag.
"What's in my bag?" he wondered. He opened his bag and there was the Riolu.
"Riley?" said Jason. The Riolu climbed up his arm and perched himself onto Jason's shoulders.
"Looks like I'm gonna need to make a trip to the Mart," he said.

Jason walked out of the Pokémart with a new Pokéball in hand. I've never had one of these before, he excitedly thought. He lightly tapped Riley's head with the Pokéball. Riley's glowed and transformed into a mass of light that entered the Pokéball. It shook in Jason's hand.
*shake*
*shake*
*shake*
*click*
Jason felt a sense of satisfaction and glee at the last click. He strolled along and absentmindedly glanced at his watch. "Oh no. I'm late!" he exclaimed.

Ten minutes later he arrived at the Lab, sweating and panting.
"You're late." Elm said.
"Yeah," Jason gasped, "I lost track of time."
"Well luckily for you, there's no field work today."
"Really?"
"I need you to head to Ecruteak City."
"How come?"
"I need you to retrieve an egg for me from Morty."
"The Gym Leader?"
"Exactly. As you know, I'm currently studying the Amorphous Egg Group. So I called and asked for a Gastly egg. Hmm..." the Professor checked his watch, "I believe the bus arrives in two hours? You should really get packing, and no dilly dallying this time!"

latest

Jason and Rose took their seats in the bus headed for Ecruteak City.
"The ride should be about a couple of hours." mumbled Jason, fumbling inside his bag.
"Isn't there a Gym is Ecruteak?" asked Rose.
"Yeah. That's where we're headed actually." Jason replied.
"You gonna do the challenge?"
"Sadly no, I'm gonna pick up an egg for the Professor."
"I think you should try. It'll be fun!" she replied. She pulled her book out of Jason's backpack and started reading.
Should I? pondered Jason, I guess it wouldn't hurt to battle him? We're gonna be in Ecruteak for a day or two anyway.
"Hey Rosie, wake me up when we stop, okay?"
"Mmkay" she grumbled.

"Ah, Ecruteak." Jason said. He breathed in the cool air.
"Wow!" Rose marveled, "It's so pretty here!"
It was beautiful indeed. All of the buildings were made in a traditional Johtonese style, a bell tower chimed in the distance. The odd thing was that most of the trees were green, but some were an autumn brown, as if it was Fall.
"Alright. Lets head to the Gym." suggested Jason.

Jason pushed on the doors of the Gym, but they didn't budge.
"Aw... It's closed?" Rose whined.
"Looks like it." reckoned Jason. "Well, I guess we have time to kill until it opens?" Jason checked his map. "How 'bout Route 37?" he suggested.
"Okay! I'll race ya!" she yelled and she ran off.
"Rosie!" Jason called, but she was already gone.
Jason rolled his eyes and went after her.

Location :: Ecruteak City
Starting Time :: 8: 45 PM

-------The Center was bustling still since the moment the sun had floated up into the sky and stained it alice blue. The nurses clambered up and down the first and second levels with bundles of decoration in and under their arms, scrambling to line up the tinsel, ribbons and streamers. Added to the fray were the early bird Trainers, having already managed to get their partners injured to the womens' dismay, and the poor, bumbling Chansey, trying the best they could to help with their pink, protuberant figures and nearly nonexistent limbs.
-------Chaos truly ensued when a particularly irritable Murkrow snaked from their Trainer's absorption and sent one of the younger Chansey barreling across the florescent-lit room out of fear. The rotund assistant met the legs of their owner and they grabbed onto their uniform for dear life as the poor woman teetered off balance and, somehow, with her went the entire right half of the 'Welcome New Trainers!' paper display.
-------It was ridiculous, hysterical, almost cathartic: the loud rip of paper ornaments from their perch on the wall above the front desk. The main poster itself with the painted slogan even drifted down over the aghast expressions of the nurses. That moment alone was enough of a welcome for Emberlyn than any flamboyant decorative display. She wasn't yet used to waking up so early but the animated catastrophe around her failed to aggravate her. Rather, it invigorated her, kept her enthralled and not drifting off with a worn novel in her lap.
-------She let go of her pent-up laughter, passing it off as one made out of pity as she surged up from the guest seating area with two other young Trainers to pry the paper off of the nurses. Their collective response amounted to sounding irked and undoubtedly non-apologetic as they were quick in shooing the adolescents off and away to "get their Pokemon, they should be ready by now!"
-------This was true for the two other girls whose Marill came sunnily rushing out from the back. However, Emberlyn, confusedly, was left to watch the siblings leave with their things, their partners and pamphlets stuck into their hands by a timid Chansey at the front door. But then, suddenly, she heard a powerful scream resonating from the back area where the two Water-types had emerged.
-------Out of curiosity and concern, she ran down the hall to meet the utteration and was in the doorway of Room 32 before any others of piqued interest could trail her. Standing before her, then, was a scrawny woman in white uniform whose face was almost as warm as her pink ringlets as she stood there, mouth greatly agape, screaming and screaming. They were screams of utter turmoil and the woman herself had gone rigid with her lanky arms clenched at her sides. Barely visible, then, were the twiddling claws clasping her sides, and inevitably Emberlyn observed there was a shadowy creature holding on to this ailed lady for dear life—
-------"Kelly Hops!" At the pronouncement, the Sableye obediently popped her head out from her perch, tilting her gem-like gaze past the nurse to eye her Trainer. "What are you doing?"
-------The rhetoric question was laced with mirth. Emberlyn shook with amusement at the little Ghost-type's antics as Kelly gave a grunt before sliding from the pink-haired woman's back onto the laminated floor. She'd always done this, the clinginess as a sign of gratitude. It was like a spontaneous hug from a touchy stranger, her way of affectionately saying "thank you".
-------With the Sableye off of her, the uniformed lady snapped back into action like an animatronic. "Great Kabutops, keep that thing under control!"
-------Emberlyn was taken aback by the severity. "She didn't do anything during her check-up, did she?"
-------"Climbing on me…" The question went practically ignored. The nurse busied herself now with her blanched white clothing, tugging the form-hugging dress with shaking hands and murmuring fervently, more to herself than the Trainer standing there. "Nasty… gnarled-looking thing!" It was to be assumed Kelly had done little, if anything, at all.
-------Ember wafted at the front of the room for a while as her Sableye casually ambled up, seemingly unfazed by the nurse's meltdown, though her upset was too subtle for a young Pokemon like her to read anyways. The violet-haired Trainer in her black beanie was the opposite as she bit her lip, eyes ringed with shadow jetting about awkwardly, as she just drifted there in her low-cut, lace tee showcasing a plethora of stone-like necklaces and choker.
-------"What are you doing, girl?" A corpulent nurse squeezed past her abrasively, a Sentret cradled in her portly arms. Emberlyn's eyes glossed over the little creature as they passed swiftly by. Their breaths came shallowly, shakily. The poor critter had a prominent burn plastered on its brown belly. She caught a whisper as the one nurse passed them onto the other: "Another one from the fires."
-------They caught her watching, clearly gaping, and roughly shoved her out with the written report. Emberlyn read as she walked, the bangles of her boots tinkering with each stride, her Sableye waddling behind in an effort to keep pace.
-------"Condition is good… Status is good… No additional effects… Overall, healthy. Well!" The doors slid open and they were out on the city. "Looks like we're in business." With that, Ember peered down warmly at her partner, but the loving look was soon accompanied with a sigh as the girl looked away, squinting off into the light of dawn.
-------Emberlyn's voice was tart. "Interesting wake-up call, huh?"
-------The heavy feeling was not returned as she looked upon Kelly once more. The Sableye was following her earlier look out over the horizon but soon her interest turned elsewhere, namely on the pavement, and they doddered out to finger loose gravel along the road. Emberlyn thought it admirable, the attitude, that unrelenting curiosity that prevented Kelly Hops from ever dawdling on silly human emotions. Though Ember herself was stumped sometimes by the behavior, for she could not understand how much the Sableye absorbed from the world around her. Yet she wondered how life seemed when your eyes had facets and aspects.
-------There was one thing Kelly hadn't missed and it made itself known as a wintry breeze, twined with the blossomy, spice-like scent of the city, threatened to blow a piece of creased paper from her claws.
-------"Oh, hey!" Emberlyn rushed to entangle her Sableye's finding. "Pamphlet."
-------She unfolded it, the neat, three-fold sheet with a proud, full-color image of Clair on its front. The leader stood regally, arms crossed, back-to-back with her noble-seeming Kingdra, and underneath them both was the title: Calling All New Trainers: Becoming the Next Johto Champion!
-------The League itself had organized this opportune, region-wide trip. According to gossip, their ranks hadn't been very busy lately, especially with the Training boom in Alola sapping interest in the Johto region or the neighboring Kanto. Emberlyn thought all the information crammed onto the first page to be nice but unnecessary. She was a long-time graduate of Trainer's School, after all, and was positive she could tell the difference between a Pokeball and a Potion if both were handed to her, implying she didn't have plenty already hidden away in her bag. Much more appreciated was a map of Ecruteak, the "starting city" as it was. Though she herself had placed a token for the mystic city of Blackthorn, from what she'd seen since a quick trip to the Pokemart and booking a temporary room at the Center, Ecruteak was, without a doubt, interesting. Home of the Kimono Girls and two of the region's great towers.
-------"One of them's pretty much burned down, but we can still visit it, apparently? That's cool." She shut the booklet and put it in her bag for safekeeping. "It'd be like a really creepy museum. Who knows what we'd fine, huh, Kelly?"
-------The Sableye stared up attentively.
-------"We get a special pass inside since I've got a Trainer's license. D' you think you'd protect me if a zombie came at us?"
-------Kelly looked as if she were deeply considering it. This made Emberlyn laugh. "Naw, you'd probably just book it, right?"
-------Kelly Hops gave a mirthful grunt. Her pointed purple face broke into a jagged-tooth smile.
-------The ringing of the Bell Tower's namesake; adventure's call. The town was bursting to life now. The strewn-up lanterns and window-side candles of yesternight had long been blown out. Now doors were opening and folks in home kimonos were staggering out to tend to their lawns, retrieve the mail from the domestic Taillow coming in with the breeze or simply greet the approaching day. Some kids were already out, kicking about a ball with a painted Voltorb's face. One called out to Emberlyn—"That's a cool Pokemon!"—before racing past with the plaything at his ankles.
-------"Hey, let's explore," Ember expressed brightly. "This place is really cool! We don't really have anywhere to go." It was especially so with the route south of there being so particularly hazardous, as the burned Sentret had signaled.
-------Kelly appeared especially perky at the notion of exploration. Her crystalline eyes shone eagerly and almost hungrily she hunkered forward down the road with Emberlyn gathering up her leather shoulder bag to join her.
-------"Maybe there'll be some other Trainers out. I can't remember the last time you got some battle practice, Kelly." The two set off afterwards, heading in the center of town where activity had quickly risen, almost as quickly as the sun had made itself comfortable in the very middle of the alice blue sky.

Chapter 1.1 Ecruteak City/Route 37 - Day 1

Ecruteak City was dark, gloomy, and discomforting – at least for many. For Rayne, it was bright, full of life, and a beautiful town that had its own secrets, its own joys, and its own history – nothing to be shamed for. Ecruteak was her home, at least it was for the past year or so. There was nothing dark about this town, nothing that Rayne didn't love. Her house was a beautiful duality of architecture and combat tiers – five levels, each dedicated to something specific. The first two levels (the ceiling high enough to count as two levels) doubled as a personal training gym. There, her parents trained, as well as in the beautiful garden outside that was obscured from onlookers. Her parents, one who's career was dressed as a competitive battler and the other a veteran contester, practiced their strategies and choices with each other. At the end of their day, their Pokémon would retreat up to the third level, constructed just for the Pokémon. All the Pokémon were allowed to stretch outside their Pokeballs. The level was built was all sorts of environments where the Pokémon would be at home and relaxed with windows to beautiful views of the city. The fourth level was the suite for Rayne and her parents. The first half doubled as a living room, fit with a television and comfortable sofas, and a kitchen. Down the hallway from the living area were three bedrooms, one for her parents, one for Rayne, and the third a guest room fit with four beds. The door to the fifth level was at the end of the hallway, but locked from normal access. The fifth level merely housed storage items and thousands of Yen worth of medical equipment – most for humans instead of Pokémon – from wheelchairs for a child, for a teenager, and one for an adult, to standing assistants, cans, and crutches. Most were no longer needed, but ready at the moment's notice if necessary.
Rayne, and her new companion, Raenhik were in the kitchen. Rayne had prepared several Pokepuffs and a buffet of human food. She gave Raenhik a Pokepuff, topped with slices of Tamato and Sitrus berries, before she sat down to enjoy some food. The television was on and broadcasting the normal news around her – fires starting in route thirty-seven, the gym leader being away from his gym, and a few missing people. The latter, how sad.
"Awake already? It's barely sunrise."
Rayne looked up and smiled at her mother's entrance and offered a muffin. Her mother was right – outside, the light was the faintest gray-blue, and the sunrise's normal pick and baby yellow shades were barely peeking up over the trees. "I thought I'd take Raenhik to get some experience in."
Mother sat. "You can use the garden and fitness level for that whenever you want," she said.
Rayne shrugged lightly and enjoyed her food. "I know, but there's only so much I can do. The other Pokémon know not to hurt me or Raenhik and won't attack or battle with their full power. If… If you got me Raenhik because of what I think, of letting me journey, I need to see how wild Pokémon and other trainers battle because they definitely will not hold back from battling."
Mother smiled. "Well said," she raised a hand and grazed her fingers along Rayne's cheek and jaw. "You're getting wise. Just don't overdue it, alright?"
Rayne laughed briefly, a warm sound. "I promise, Momma." She leaned over and gave her white-haired mother a kiss on the cheek before she finished off her muffin and got to her feet. "When is Da' leaving for Hoenn?"
"In about an hour."
Rayne nodded and looked to Raenhik and allowed the abnormally colored Torchic to jump into her waiting arms. "Alright, well, I'm going to go shower and get ready. I'll be back in an hour to wish him well and luck."
Rayne's room was cozy and painted a beautiful warm sienna. At different times of the day, the light in the room would always be warm, even at night or at the barest sunrise, like it was then. In the corner was Rayne's bed, with a makeshift bed for Raenhik to sleep close (the Torchic, after meeting Rayne, immediately bonded to her and would cry if not close to his trainer), and across from that at the other side of the room were her dressers, a television, several empty Pokeballs, and three or four posters on the wall, with about another dozen in the corner, rolled and stored. All three posters were framed – one was of her mother, taken about eleven years ago when she was still champion of Kanto. At her side was her trusted partner, Ninetales. Her hair was longer then, but still a warm creamy white. The next poster was of her father, taken more recently, in one of his many contest outfits with just one of his partners working at his side – Espeon, who she remembered had evolved during one of his contests and allowed him to win the ribbon. The third poster – well, the third poster was of a fired up Blaziken – no pun intended.
Rayne looked at Raenhik and smiled. One day… one day they'll get there.
The hour passed quickly, and before Rayne left her room, she backed her bag a bit with much needed supplied, including her Pokeballs, lots of water, and enough snacks to keep both of them happy and full until night fell.
With Raenhik in her arms, Rayne made her way down all the steps and out the front door once she got to the first ground level. Right outside, her parents waited. Her father, Royce, was getting the rest of his equipment secured on the back of his Salamence, but turned to Rayne at her arrival.
With arms wide and heavy, he embraced her and held her close. Mouth at her ear he whispered. "Be safe out there."
"Always, Da', always," Rayne said.
They allowed the hug to continue for a minute or two before Salamence snorted impatiently.
"Alright, alright, you giant lizard," Father pulled away and tapped his Pokémon on the snout with amusement before he got onto its back. "Keep me updated. If you feel any numbness in your legs, call me or your mom. If you have a headache, call me or your mom. If you feel anything, call-"
"You or mom," Rayne smiled. "I got it."
Salamence flapped its wings and hovered a few feet off the ground.
"Good luck," Rayne smiled wider and watched her father wave before he took off over the trees and the rising sun.

"Alright Raenhik, keep up the great work." Rayne instructed to her companion as they practiced close to the border of Route thirty-seven. They had only been practicing for about an hour or two. It was morning so the heat hadn't settled in their bones yet. Not that it bothered either of them. Rayne was fine with high levels of heat, as was Raenhik – being a Fire type and all. "Low Kick, once more!"
Raenhik chirped and leaped forward, as quick as an arrow released from a quiver, and hit the tree he faced with enough power to cause a vibration to move through the trunk and up into the leaves. Raenhik flew through the air and landed back on his claws before he looked back to Rayne with a glimmer in his navy eyes.
"Excellent," Rayne nodded and gestured with her hand. "Come here, time for a break." Raenhik rushed back up to his trainer with another loud chirp before he was given a small bag of Oran Berries. "Eat up." As the Torchic ate, so did Rayne, but she nibbled on a protein bar instead.
She slipped to the ground and let Raenhik make himself comfortable in her lap as he gulped down the offered berries. With each eaten berry, Raenhik's little arm tuffs fluffed up in excitement and he chirped out his excitement.
Rayne chuckled lightly and laid a hand against her companion's head. She didn't know how she ended up so lucky with such an adorable and well-mannered partner.
Their break went by quickly before the two returned to their practice. Raenhik hit the tree again – once, twice… five times. Raenhik launched forward once more in hopes to hit the tree with a Low Kick – until a screech distracted Raenhik and caused him to lose focus. Instead, the little Torchic slammed straight into the tree and slumped down.
"Raenhik," Rayne rushed to her partner's side. "You alright?" The little Torchic took a moment before it shook it off and jumped to its claws with a determined chirp. "What was that?" Rayne looked up towards the leaves of the tree as they rustled.
All went quiet.
Suddenly, a green blur launched itself out from the branches toward Rayne and Raenhik. The two rolled to the side as an angry Spinarak landed on the ground and turned to them. It buzzed and shook furiously.
"Damn," Rayne scowled. "We must've been hitting its home and aggravating it." Rayne pulled herself to her feet and held her hands out, a calming gesture. "We don't mean harm, we're sorry."
Spinarak screeched and jumped forward.
"Flame Burst!" Rayne commanded, and her little bullet of a Torchic jumped in front of her before it launched out an attack. A burst of fire hit the Spinarak, but not before it used String Shot. The bug's attack sealed Raenhik to the ground. Though hurt, the Spinarak wasn't done. It jumped up and fired a Poison Sting.
Hindered by the String Shot, Raenhik couldn't move. The Poison Sting was a direct shot.
Rayne grit her teeth and took out Raenhik's Pokeball. She didn't know if she should recall Raenhik to his Pokeball. She knew how much poison can do to a Pokémon. "Flame Burst!" Rayne commanded.
Raenhik obeyed and shot out the attack at Spinarak, but it missed, and the wild Pokémon used another Poison Sting. Raenhik pulled at the sticky goo around his foot but couldn't get free.
If she was going to defeat this wild Pokémon, she had to think about how to get Raenhik up and moving. Wait – that was it.
"Raenhik, use a low powered Flame Burst on your foot," Rayne commanded.
Raenhik hesitated for just a moment, but trusted his trainer and aimed down and fired. The sticky goo was engulfed in fire and Raenhik pulled free. "Excellent! Now, fire once more at Spinarak. Flame Burst!"
Like an arrow in a quiver, Raenhik shot forward and once in range, fired one more attack. It was a direct hit, and the Spinarak fell back before it scurried off in the bushes in defeat.
Rayne sighed. "Good," she said in relief. "Raenhik, come here." The Torchic retreated back to its trainer and let her look him over. "Doesn't look like the attacks did too much damage on you. Are you poisoned?"
Raenhik shook his head and chirped.
"Alright, well, just in case, we should look for Pecha berries," Rayne ran a hand through her Torchic's feathers before she took her bag and walked off. Raenhik followed at her heels.
It didn't take long to find a Pecha berry tree. With her height, Rayne was able to pick a few of the berries from the low-hanging branches. She stored them in a small berry case in her backpack and fed one to Raenhik.
Raenhik chirped happily before he froze. The Torchic spun and its feathers fluffed up in agitation.
"What is it?" Rayne turned away from the tree and followed her Pokémon's line of sight. The bushes, a few feet from them, rustled. A moment later, a Shinx stumbled out and collapsed. "It's hurt…" Rayne turned away from the tree and walked up to the Shinx. She observed the young Pokémon, and raised its chin. It's eyes were reddened and glazed over. It was burning up.
Raenhik nudged Rayne's leg.
"What is it?" Rayne looked to her partner who raised a claw and pointed to her free hand. Clenched between her fingers were a few Pecha berries. "The Shinx is poisoned… you're right." Rayne looked to the little Pokémon, who looked up at her and whimpered.
"Shhh, relax," Rayne coaxed and raised a berry to its lips. "Eat this. You'll feel better." The Shinx was hesitant, but Raenhik chirped lovingly. The Shinx chewed slowly and swallowed. The blue cat still whimpered but blinked and swayed its tail in gratitude.
"We'll be right here," Rayne coaxed and ran a hand down its pelt. "We won't leave you."

Two hours passed by slowly as both Rayne and Raenhik helped to coax and heal the young Shinx. Between Pecha berries, Rayne also fed it Oran berries. Slowly but surely, the kitten got better. By midday, Shinx purred and waved its tail. It nudged Rayne's hand and looked up at her happily.
"Feeling better?" Rayne smiled warmly.
Shinx purred.
"Good."
Shinx nudged her hand once more before it wiggled out of her lap and jumped a foot from her to face her. It tensed and swayed its tail before it growled playfully. Raenhik perked to attention.
"Do you want to… battle?" Rayne asked with a tilt of her head.
Shinx yapped once and Rayne chuckled.
"Well alright." She rose. "Raenhik, go."
With a chirp, Raenhik jumped forward. Shinx lunged forward and tackled Raenhik. The Torchic skirted back and readied itself.
"Low Kick!"
Raenhik shot forward and grazed Shinx's side before the cat leaped away and rebounded for another Tackle. Back and forth, back and forth, Shinx and Raenhik battled.
Both Pokémon were panting through the match, as was Rayne. Battling was exciting – and exhausting.
"Let's try one last Flame Burst, Raenhik!" Rayne ordered and her companion launched out one last attack which landed directly against Shinx.
The blue kitten fell back against the ground and slumped.
"Good job," Rayne said before she fished into her pocket and enlarged an empty Pokeball. "Let's see if Shinx would like to join us!"
She threw out the Pokeball and watched as the Shinx was engulfed in a bright light.
The Pokeball flashed red and started to shake…

Ecruteak City

Garrett sat on the stool, staring at the PC in front of him. It was rather handy that the Pokémon Centers offered free PC usage, especially when he was far from home. If he had it his way, he wouldn't have wasted anytime on it, but sadly, his mother felt worried about him.

"...So, do you know what your next stop is?" The on-screen image of his mother spoke.

"I'm still a bit uncertain. I'll have a look at the map after this call, but I think I may as well do some exploring or sightseeing first." Garret replied.

"Yeah...Yeah, that's a good idea. That's what this journey is about after all. Make sure you take care of Mari, she's never been this far from home either! And don't wear her out, you know she's not used to battling." His mother reminded him. Garrett rolled his eyes. He knew Mari did not have much experience, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. With that said, it may have been a good idea to possibly find another Pokémon to add to his roster. Anything to buff it up a bit.

"Alright, alright. I have to go now, I think other people want to use the PC." Garrett said. Of course this was a little white lie, but he did not want to dawdle any longer in the center than he already had, and his mother would lecture his ear off. Saying good bye, he logged off the PC and stood up from the stool to stretch out his arms and legs. Alright...I guess maybe head down a route and see if there's anything I can find? He mumbled to himself, heading outside.

~ Route 37 ~

Garrett sat under a tree, letting out a sigh of disbelief. Finding Pokémon was harder than he thought it was going to be, not to mention trekking around aimlessly was tiresome in itself. To make things harder, he wasn't even sure what he was looking for. Considering the position he was in, he would have settled for just about anything to be honest. "Maybe...I should go back to the Pokémon Centre...there's nothing even out here." He mumbled to himself, leaning against the tree trunk staring blankly at the blue sky above. He then reached for his bag, looking through his guidebook for a possible idea on what to do, since he was absolutely clueless on what being a trainer was really about. However, just as he flipped through the pages, he noticed something from the corner of his eye. Slowly glancing at the bush, he saw a small, reddish-brown Pokémon peering through the bushes, eyeing him almost. At first it didn't do anything, but it then turned away almost as if it were uninterested in the young man. Garrett watched as it tried to scurry away, until he came to his senses.

"Wait!" He shouted, fumbling around with his bag trying to get the Pokéball that contained Mari, out of his bag. Ughh..it's going to get away! He thought to himself, finally grabbing a hold of the ball and throwing it in the air to release his electric type Pokémon.

Rowan Carson

Rowan sighed as she reached Ecruteak City. She knew she should have packed some more sensible shoes, but she had refused to listen to her brother's advice. He had warned her that traveling in three-inch boots would be the death of her, but she was too stubborn to listen. Now she was stuck with sores on her feet and cramped ankles. She sat down on a nearby bench and looked around before taking her shoes off and massaging her swollen ankles.

She sighed as her Phanpy left her Pokeball for what felt like the hundredth time today. She had spent most of the day following Allie around, which contributed to the pain she was feeling in her ankles. She had lost track of the amount of times Allie had almost gotten into a fight with a wild Pokemon simply by bumping into it.

"Allie, can you stay still for at least a little while?" Rowan asked tiredly as the little elephant rolled around excitedly. It seemed like she almost never ran out of energy, and it was exhausting to attempt to keep up with her. She ran a hand through her unruly hair as Allie continued to roll around and sighed.

"Fine, fine. Just give me a second to put my shoes back on." Rowan pulled her boots back on and zipped them up reluctantly. She had hoped that Allie would at least let her rest a little bit longer, but that was asking for a bit much. Her Pokemon was too energetic for her own good, and it would eventually get her into trouble someday.

What should we do now? I don't really think we're ready to challenge the gym yet, and Allie's too nice to battle any wild Pokemon… The blonde frowned slightly and gasped as the Phanpy rolled off towards the nearby route before she could even blink. She scowled as Allie rolled out of sight and stretched before following her onto Route 37. She can't get herself into that much trouble, can she?

Chapter 1.2 Ecruteak City/Route 37 - Day 1

The time it took for the Pokeball to shake seemed to slow. Each second passed by like it was a moment, and with each flash of red from the Pokeballs indicator was enough to send flashes of anxiety through Rayne's body followed by the strangest tingling in her finger tips. And then the Pokeball stopped shaking and the indicator no longer flashed.
Raenhik jumped in joy and excitement with its abnormally colored feathers fluffed out. It chirped happily and raced around the Pokeball as Rayne stepped forward to pick it up.
"Excellent," Rayne lifted the Pokeball with a wide smile. She looked down to Raenhik and gave a laugh. "We caught a Shinx, buddy."
Raenhik chirped loudly in agreement.
Rayne, with the smile still wide on her face, tossed the Pokeball lightly. "Come on out." In a flash of brilliant light, Shinx appeared and faced both Rayne and Raenhik, and its Pokeball returned to Rayne's hand. "Hello," Rayne bent down, and Shinx ran up to her and pressed against her side and purred. She chuckled. "Yes, welcome." Rayne scooped up Shinx into her arms and ran her fingers through its coat. "Now, I think we should give you a name, don't you think?"
Shinx purred.
"Hmmm, how about Cleander?" Rayne suggested and Shinx rapidly nodded and meowed. "Good, then welcome to the team, Cleander."
Raenhik jumped up into Rayne's arms to join his newest team mate.

With the sun high in the sky, it meant it was time for lunch, so with Raenhik and Cleander at her heels Rayne headed to the Ecruteak Pokemon Center. Nurse Joy and her helping Pokemon waited at the front, and that was Rayne's first stop. She lifted both of her Pokemon to the counter. "Take care of them for me, please?" Rayne asked.
"Of course," Nurse Joy nodded and bowed respectfully and hurried to take both Raenhik and Cleander off for their check-up.
While Rayne waited, she walked to the Pokemon Center's diner and ordered food for herself and her Pokemon, one dish for a Fire type and another for an Electric type. It didn't take long for the food to be ready, or for Rayne's Pokemon to be healed.
The two of them rushed over to her almost as soon as they spotted her and Nurse Joy's Pokemon assistant handed Rayne a slip, proclaiming a full bill of health for both of them.
"Thank you," she bowed in thanks to the assistant before it went back off to its duties. Rayne looked to Raenhik and Cleander and gestured to the food. "Time to eat, boys." The Pokemon both gave excited cries before they jumped to the seats and ate. Both of them worked hard in their battling. They definitely deserved the food, and even Rayne wasn't surprise at how quickly they both devoured lunch.
When they were all done, Rayne stretched in her booth and sighed. "Not bad for the first morning, right guys?" Both chirped and meowed in agreement. After stretching, Rayne pulled herself to her feet. "Alright, we should continue our training and head back out to Route 37. But first…"
Rayne walked for a small machine located by the main center's counter. It was an interesting machine, much like a Pokedex, but it looked more like a scanner than anything. One side of it was a portable laser scanner, and the other side of it was a computer screen that flashed PLEASE SCAN YOUR POKEMON.
Rayne picked up the scanner and looked at Cleander. "Do you know what this little machine is, buddy?"
Cleander tilted his head, confused.
"It's a Pokemon Scanner," Rayne said. "It's a harmless little device that scans a Pokemon and tells me what your moves are, your typing, gender, and ability is on screen." Rayne raised it but Cleander tensed.
She took a moment to bend down and run a hand down its coat to soothe him. "It's okay," she coaxed. Cleander calmed under her touch and purred.
Rayne raised the scanner and the beams moved down Cleander's body harmlessly. In a moment, the scanner beeped and Rayne got to her feet to check the screen.

SHINX
The Flash Pokemon
Gender: MALE
Ability: RIVALRY
Moves: TACKLE; HELPING HAND

Rayne placed the scanner back in its appropriate spot and looked to Raenhik and Cleander. The Torchic nodded to Cleander in approval, and the Shinx purred in thanks.
"Come on, you two, let's get back to Route 37." Of course, Rayne thought to herself how useful a personal scanner like that would be when she traveled and caught a Pokemon without having a Pokemon Center so close by. Ah well, she could ask her mother when the day was over if she knew of something. Maybe a Pokedex.

Back in Route 37, it was hot enough to cause sweating, at least for those not used to such weather. Humidity clung in the air like it was a dense fog, and even still fog rolled around the trees. This was Ecruteak City after all.
Both Raenhik and Cleander took turns battling different wild Pokemon, ranging from Pidgey, Ledyba, Spinarak, and the single Pineco. None of which joined the team. There was only one other Pokemon she knew that inhabited this route that Rayne was interested in adding to her team. And by four in the afternoon, that Pokemon showed itself.
It was a reddish-orange, striped, and had a half-mane, fluffy tail, and little cow lick of tan fur while it searched for berry bushes around the tall grasses.
Growlithe and Arcanine had always been some of Rayne's favorite Pokemon. Hell, Rayne loved Fire types in general, so she knew she wanted the opportunity to add it to her team.
She was hidden by the trees and her Pokemon were at her heels. Softly, she looked to Cleander and whispered. She pointed to the Growlithe. "Cleander, use Tackle."
The Shinx rushed out, and before the Growlithe could come to full attention, Cleander landed a direct hit against the wild Fire type and knocked it to the ground.
The Growlithe yowled in displeasure and bared its teeth.
Rayne moved out from behind the tree and shouted. "Tackle again, Cleander!"
Cleander jumped forward, but this time the Growlithe was ready. It snarled this time and caused Cleander to stop in his tracks. Then the Growlithe jumped forward with jaws wide and snapped down on Cleander's tail.
There was a loud cry from the Shinx as he ran and tried to pull free, but the Pokemon had a tight grip. In a quick second, the Growlithe whipped its head up and lifted Cleander into the air before it slammed him back down. The wind was knocked from Cleander, and the Growlithe whipped its head and tossed the Shinx back at Rayne's feet.
The Shinx tried to pull itself to its fee, despite how shaky and hurt it was, but Rayne put a hand on him. "That's enough, Cleander." Rayne said. "Raenhik, go. Low Kick."
The Torchic darted forward and immediately aimed a Low Kick toward the Growlithe's legs. The Growlithe leaped up, away from the low attack, but Raenhik spun quickly and attacked with Scratch.
"Focus Energy," Rayne commanded as Raenhik landed on the ground. The little Torchic nodded and stood there and focused, but still continued to move on its clawed feet.
The Growlithe pulled itself up, bared its teeth, and growled, however it didn't bother Raenhik as much as it had with Cleander.
"Go in, get close!" Rayne shouted and the Torchic darted in.
The Growlithe opened its jaws wide and snapped out with Bite, but Raenhik moved and dodged almost expertly.
"Low Kick." Raenhik swung out and landed a direct hit against the Growlithe's jaw. The puppy Pokemon landed on the ground in a heap.
With a smirk, Rayne pulled out a Pokeball, enlarged it, and threw it at the Growlithe. It was engulfed in a light and shook once, twice, three times before it finally went silent.
The Growlithe was caught.

TONY "SHADOW" O'SHEA

Tony took a deep breath as he entered Ecruteak City from the West. Finally he had reached the location where was supposed to start his quest towards becoming the champion. As he looked around the city while he walked, he noticed several people he guessed were trainers. Or rather, obstacles in his way of achieving his goal. He pulled out a Pokeball and released a white-ish, beige colored Pokemon. The little Mankey snorted as he stretched his arms and legs, before climbing up onto Tony's shoulder.

"Look around Kung. We're finally at the place where our dreams can finally start to take shape. Each of these trainers I'm sure has similar goals but what they don't know is that we are gonna be the Champions."

The Mankey formed his hand into a fist as he began to work himself into a frenzy. Tony could only smirk as this was Kung's way of agreeing with his Trainer.

"Alright Kung I've heard there's a cool challenge here in Ecruteak where we can get an Eevee. I think we should check it out but first we need to get a little stronger so let's head back to the west and check out that route we saw while walking into town."

This only seemed to fuel the frenzy that Mankey was now in. It was now jumping around and beating its chest. Tony smirked again at this. There was a reason he had chosen Mankey as his partner when he left the Cianwood gym to go on his journey. They were a perfect pair.

As the Mankey ran off ahead of Tony towards the gate that lead out towards route 37, Tony felt more determined than ever to achieve his goal. His dream was one step closer to becoming a reality.

Location :: Ecruteak City
Starting Time :: 9: 32 PM

-------Ecruteak smelled of hickory wood and cinnamon. There was a striking impression of homeliness that Emberlyn felt the city gave, imbedded in every groove of each timely house, a feeling that floated in the wind.
-------By half past nine, the people were putting out the lanterns in their doorways. A Poliwhirl spat at a few along the road to quash their dimly-burning fires. Curiously, warily, Kelly approached them, regarding their plump, blubbery form with unfamiliarity and intrigue. The Water-type peered down confused though made no motion to her and neither she to it. They were completely at a standstill, the Sableye staring absently into its mesmerizing stomach swirl…
-------Emberlyn quickly caught Kelly Hops by the wrist and, with an apologetic look in Poliwhirl's direction, hurried along again, before her Sableye could get sick.
-------But the blanched look gone in the Ghost-type's crystalline eyes, the two went free along the Ecruteak roads, returning kindly waves from onlooking locals, observing warm-leaved trees, tranquil ponds, Bellsprout statues and signs painted with a language of both ancient and present times: 'れきしが ながれる まち; The city where history flows.'
-------On their tour, the two came across a schoolhouse on the eastern end of the city, a grey-walled, red-roofed building not unlike all the others with an expansive, fenced-off stretch of land to also call its own. It was the commotion in that area that attracted the two. Kelly immediately lost interest in what lay beyond the fence, being out-measured by it by many a foot, instead turning to chase an evasive autumn leaf caught in the tumultuous breeze. Emberlyn, however, allowed curiosity to consume a bit of modesty, peering out into the schoolyard where a great bunch of children stood estatically bounding around one another. There were hundreds of them, and it was implausible that they all went to this same school. Emberlyn even pinpointed the signature tanned complexions of far-off Hoenn and coastal Unova amongst the group. All the kids looked about the same, however, but certainly weren't her own. Strange to Ember, as she regarded the balloons, the certificates rolled up in each little hand, the banners strung up in the trees and the overall energized atmosphere. She'd come across a ceremony. A graduation? Of predominantly ten-year-olds? For a Kalosian teen it was such a surreal thought.
-------Her own presence was caught very quickly by a little girl lingering by her side of the fence. Just tall enough for her forehead to be perceivable, the girl stood on the tips of her toes to make her eyes just as so. They went wide as she regarded Emberlyn. The child froze.
-------"Hi!" She rushed out a beaming welcome as to hopefully prevent the girl from outright panicking. Her smiling face, however, went ignored as Kelly sensed the appearance of a stranger and made a mad dash from the leaf, scrabbling her claws at wooden planks instead in a vain attempt to scale the fence.
-------The little girl pulled herself up to see the little, determined Sableye and cracked a smile. She turned to Ember now: "Your Pokemon's really cute. Are you a Trainer?"
-------Relieved at the comfort, she responded. "Yeah, I just got my license a few days back. Kelly here's my first."
-------At the mention of her name, Kelly Hops perked up, peering straight up and ogling the girl's amused face.
-------"Lucy, who are you talking to?"
-------The sound of yet another newcomer made Kelly antsy. The Sableye scrambled into her Trainer's awaiting arms, being lifted up to a level more suitable for greeting humans.
-------This particular woman had a patent atmosphere to her that screamed "mother", particularly to this little girl who quickly disappeared behind her. She was one of great presence with a highly expressive face splotched red from the passing chills. Her eyes were slight and sparkled with wary. "Who are you? You're not from here, are you?"
-------"No, I'm from Kalos. I'm a travelling Trainer." Ember had her fingers running along the wallet in her jeans pocket, fully outfitted with a license for proof.
-------Fortunately, the woman was not too suspicious, as a flitting look of acknowledgement over the Pokemon in her arms was enough for her to allow her daughter to stand beside her and not behind. "Alright. Kalos, hmm? I've been hearing a lot about it recently. Where in Kalos, exactly?"
-------"Geosenge City."
-------"Oh! The place with all of the rocks, right." She gestured to Lucy and the girl ran off to reunite with the jubilant children in the schoolyard. Interestingly, her mother gestured to Emberlyn as well. "Why don't you come on in, introduce yourself to all of us? I'm sure everyone would like to know how life in Kalos is like, and how your journey has been going so far."
-------It was a bold and unexpected offer that Ember pleasantly obliged to, and the woman unlatched the gate to abide her entry. It was not something she was used to, being so kindly invited into the presence of complete strangers. Habitually it was her responsibility to be the hospitable one but charisma like that did not come characteristically to her. A lucky moment like this was so greatly appreciated by Ember, even if she was just answering the questions of curious moms. Of course it couldn't have all been fortuitous; the word "Kalos" had evidently sparked something. The word "Trainer" too must have inspired Ms. Ling's decision—she soon introduced herself as Ms. Ling, anyway. As Emberlyn pondered deeply, however, as best she could under the constant interrogation of these thoroughly-intrigued mothers, she made a connection. Her greatest role models aside from family were all Trainers. The most revered people of their generation had all participated in the League. There was a certain adoration the public was bound to give anyone who possesses a license; she realized this now and felt a sudden, satisfying revelation that she had a license, that she was in that category of head-turners. Gleefully she whisked through, almost irresponsible, a plethora of the things she might be able to get away with now that she had such a power.
-------Meanwhile, Kelly had slunk from her grip and out onto the grass where she was immediately swamped by the youthful newly-grads, all gaping with a storm of different emotions bubbling up in the immediate crowd. It was attention the Sableye could accept, until one lousy boy with his cap turned back and a tooth knocked out took up a stick and made prodding motions at her eyeballs. "Why's its eyes look like rocks?
-------Assertively, Kelly Hops acted on instinct, surging towards the provoker with teeth bared and claws extended. The crowd leaped back at her gurgling hiss, a number of its members turning tail and fleeing, including that one boy, squealing with horror.
-------"Kelly!" The Sableye whirled around to meet her pale-faced Trainer, though they both knew the retort was instinctive. Emberlyn predicted misunderstanding and she ran to gather her Pokemon before the moms could get to her. The girl could feel their collective vehemence glowly hotly even with her back turned.
-------Fortunately, another one of the moms who had not joined her peers at the refreshment table came crossing the lawn, drawing attention off of Kelly and to her chipper self instead. "Hey, girls! So sorry I took so long but I got the extra chips! I got another bag too, just in case! You know those boys love potato chips! I know Patrick would eat an entire bag by himself if I let 'im alone!"
-------There was indeed a little boy just barely keeping pace with her, his beaten hiker boots dragging across the yard with every sullen step. He had glasses clearly fastened tightly to the sides of his head as they maintained from sliding off even while the kid kept his head firmly down. He glowered down at his muddy shoes with his muddy-colored hair just hanging past the nape in his neck while his mother implicitly dragging him from the schoolhouse.
"Who are you, now?" the mother piped to her. The inquiry brought the boy's head up and, though he would not meet Ember's eyes, he felt a sensation of being critically watched from a distance as she formed an answer.
-------"Uh, 'm Emberlyn. I'm a Trainer from the Kalos region—"
-------"Kalos!? Oh my goodness! Why would you ever leave there!? It seems so dreamy! So many places to go and so many things to see and do… It's definitely no boring ol' Johto, that's for sure." She gave her a jesting wink. "Ha! But maybe that's 'cause I've been everywhere in Johto. It just gets kinda same-y after a while, you know?"
-------Emberlyn just smiled and nodded.
-------"Ooh, but you're a Trainer too? That's so great!" She wasn't talking entirely to her now. The woman also sent an expectant look in the brown-haired boy's general direction. He was conveniently wiping his lenses with the rim of his sweatshirt.
-------"How long have you been training, Emberlyn? My that's a spectacle of a name."
-------"Just for a day or two so far, and… thank you."
-------She gave a theatrical gasp. "Oh my gosh, you're just starting out, that's perfect!" Another glance shot towards the boy but he deflected her enthusiasm with his utter disinterest, studying the seconds passing by on his wristwatch.
Emberlyn saw the frustration imminent in the mother's stare and decided to deliver aid. "Is he a Trainer too?" She gestured towards the boy and he sensed this, standing to full attention immediately and with utter bewilderment.
-------His mother was, as expected, overjoyed and grateful as well, evident in the passing look she exchanged with Ember. "Why, yes! Yes he is, Emberlyn! Patrick just filled out all his paperwork this morning so his license is all ready to go and—"
-------"And I've told you at least four times today not to call me 'Patrick', Trina. It's Pots."
-------The child finally spoke and he did so with stunning animosity alight in his tone, regarding Ms. Trina Leveve with a gelid glare. Emberlyn had never been intimidated by an eleven-year-old before until that moment.
-------Trina herself appeared obviously stricken but with an undertone of dread too that implied what "Pots" had said was not unpredictable of him.
-------"Patrick—"
-------"Pots."
-------"—i-it's the name on your Trainer Card—"
-------"Then that's the wrong name." He stood obstinate against the woman's hysteric, half-uttered arguments. "And I bet you put it on there yourself, too. Good on you for stepping in for things like that. It'll make a big difference when I'm a Trainer and don't even live with you anymore."
-------The words worked a black magic on the woman. Her mouth clamped shut and she was drained of all passion aside from a deeper, sadder emotion that shone like water in her eyes. But Pots had turned away and now to Ember he said this: "You don't have to ask about me. It's for the best if I'm left alone anyways, to be honest."
-------"Why do you say that?"
-------"I dunno. I'm alone most of the time anyway."
-------"It doesn't have to stay that way." Emberlyn spoke before he could follow up with what were likely to be parting words. Suddenly, within her, surged a feeling of panic at the thought of this boy departing to go and sulk on his own. Perhaps he'd busy himself in the world of a book or blame the others around him for their lack of understanding but, either way, he'd be alone, he'd be isolated. She would know.
-------But the connection was thusly drawn and it dried out her mouth when she reached the conclusion. Pots had felt something as well, face whitening with bewilderment once again as he gave her the most intrigued of looks. In his face she saw both youth and maturity, the latter subdued but ever present, though she couldn't place how or why. It was how he carried himself, she was left to ultimately deduce.
-------"So… you, um, just became a Trainer today, huh?" She broke the bit of silence and forced upon herself a modest smile.
-------"Well, yeah. I thought Trina just said that."
-------He certainly had a lot of snark. "You don't seem too excited."
-------"I am. I'm just being subtle about it." He accentuated that word; subtle. Emberlyn helplessly cracked a further smile, a humored grin now, just at the concept of an eleven-year-old being subtle. Would he claim next to be… sophisticated? Socially aware?
-------Pots was an acute little boy. She did not need to laugh for him to scowl and promptly call her out. "Yeah, go ahead and smile like that. You look like your hobgoblin."
-------His caretaker had drifted out of the exchange but re-entered now with a stern utterance of his preferred title: "Pots!"
-------"Hey, she's the one about to laugh at me," he defended.
-------Kelly H. had also gone to do something or other with some pebbles on the ground as the humans involved in a complex conversation involving tones, expressions and implications that soared straight over her. However, she could be extremely acute when it involved her in-particular and the term "goblin"—used by her Trainer's insensitive mother in the recent past—struck enough of a chord to get her bounding over to the perpetrator.
-------Pots made a grimace as the Sableye's eyes met his own, glossy eyes betraying nothing, panting mouth open and revealing lines of gnashing teeth.
"Jeez, why'd you choose such a creepy Pokemon?"
-------Emberlyn, looking grimly non-amused, bit back bitterly. "She's only something to be scared of when you say something bad about her Trainer."
-------"Oh." Either Pots had believed the implicated threat or felt apologetically about what he'd said before as he flashed a look over Ember, then down at Kelly, and eventually shifted to his bottom left as he peered at the bulging pocket of his slacks. "Well, if your Pokemon wanted to beat me up, they'd have to get through mine first."
-------Emberlyn felt something within her flare up. Had she developed the "Trainer's instinct", as it was called, already? For Pots' message reeked of a challenge; so much for his apparent subtly.
-------"I'm sure she would manage." Either way, she wanted to see what supposedly non-creepy Pots had chosen for his partner. Whether it was one of the traditional Johtoan-bred Pokemon sheltered in the laboratories or some creature he'd found out in the woods.
-------Pots glowered up at her. "Oh, sure, fine, whatever. I'll battle you. 'I challenge thee,' I guess."
-------And thusly, she and Kelly were thrust into their first Trainer battle together. It came a startling surprise how suddenly it had happened and how easy it had been to find themselves feet away, adjacent from his determined-looking, glasses-wearing schoolboy in the wide, rolling yard. The other children did not have a battle cry to guess what was bound to happen between them and with stunning obedience they flooded around them, forming a rectangular border of anxious kids. Trina had obligingly stepped inside the "ring", wrestling for berries and Potions in the depths of her purse, in case things were to take a messy turn. Astonishingly, however, Ember did not believe they would. Her nervousness, inevitably there, manifested itself into resolatuon. She'd studied, she'd prepared, she'd traveled here, and she was more than ready to win.
-------However, Pots must have felt about the same way. They'd be pitting their resolves against one another to determine the prevailer. "Sequoia, I choose you!"
-------From a Pokeball burst a looming, quadruped figure, sharp-hoofed and mounted with jagged antlers, pelt a rich auburn shade and speckled with occasional spots of cream. She was a beautiful creature, the Big Horn Pokemon assumed, for the drooping jowls characteristic of her species added such rugged detail to her that she may as well have been a show 'mon. Undoubtedly, one the other hand, they made her appear more intimidating. Her neck was pridefully arched, her eyes were closed as if meditating in the young crowd's absorption. Only her horns were concerned with her competition. Golden in shade, eye-like in structure, their beady black centers glared down at a poor, gawking Kelly who fought to find her bearings in the presence of Pots' treasured partner.
-------Emberlyn was running through her essential handbook in her head, racking her brain for any semblance of what she knew about whoever this Pokemon could possibly be. Bouffalant? Tauros? Sawsbuck!? None of those names sounded right. Dolefully she deduced it to be one of the particular Pokemon she decided were too unmemorable to bother memorizing facts on. She had to go reluctantly go without prior knowledge, instead studying what was in front of her. Her eyes, as well as Kelly's, immediately went towards those horns, gleaming brilliantly in the ten-o'-clock sunlight. When she blinked, however, she saw they were far less scintillating than before, or at least she swore so, for the effect returned immediately. Had it been an illusion?
-------Regardless, she recognized the eerie stillness Kelly Hops had adopted and made an immediate connection to the Poliwhirl from earlier than morning. She called a warning to her Sableye: "Don't look at her horns! Look at the face!"
-------Kelly snapped away, looked around to see where her Trainer was pointing, and returned to Pots taking advantage of their moment of hesitance.
-------"Tackle it, Sequoia!" The Stantler flew forward, head thrust out in front of herself as she threatened to plow right across the Sableye. Her expectations were, to a point, met as she ended up plowing more so through the Ghost-type than squashing her. The utter bizzarity of seeing her opponent vanish before flashing a cheeky grin behind her as they returned to tangibility did bemuse Sequoia enough to have her halt her charge prematurely and tumble onto her side. She became a fitful, frightened mess, kicking up dirt and grass and giving deep, gasping grunts of indignance.
-------A deeply troubled Pots mumbled, "That thing's a Ghost type?"
-------Emberlyn cackled greatly now, losing propriety for the sake of the show. Kelly having essentially swapped places with the other Pokemon, she ordered: "Leer! Lower her defenses!"
-------Kelly Hops' flashing, faceted eyes caught those bulging from the flabby face of the floundering Stantler. For a few seconds, they went rigid. That was the time to attack and Ember called for a full-force Zen Headbutt. Compliantly, Kelly's head dropped downwards. She went motionless, like a doll, but only for a second, for she gave a few jerky, prickling movements, and then, without warning, she flew at Sequoia with impeccable speed. The headbutt was a direct hit that knocked the wind out Pots' Pokemon, connecting just as she was struggling to rise to her feet. The blow sent the Stantler catapulting into the earth again.
-------The audience was reaching deafening levels of excitement now and Kelly was left a dizzy wreck. Putting all possible effort in a head-centric attack was more than enough to cause a young Pokemon like herself to sway and stagger about. Emberlyn let her enthusiasm ebb as she watched the little Sableye fight to regain her composure. She felt irresponsible, ordering a move that took so much energy to perform. The girl bit her lip. We have some serious training to do.
-------Pots, surprisingly, had nothing else to add as he watched his partner's pained struggle to rise again, only appearing more darkly determined than before. Clutching his fists, he wailed encouragement in Sequoia's direction: "C'mon, girl, get up!"
-------The Stantler leapt to her hoofs, the rage reddening her muzzle. From her throat arose a great bellow—a war cry—and pawed at the ground, simmering, waiting for Pots' order so she may carry out her vengeance on her impudent opponent.
-------"Bite it!"
-------Sequoia rushed Kelly down, lashing forward with teeth extended to gnash right where the Sableye's arm had been. Kelly's Naive nature came paired with added reflexes that were just enough for her to evade, lashing herself back before scrambling to get away. As she turned, however, she was caught in the back with Sequoia's horns and, just as Pots called "Astonish!", she was violently thrown high up into the air. Like a ragdoll, she fell in a crumbled, violet mound at the base of Emberlyn's boots.
-------"Oh, damn." Sequoia was a heavy hitter and irascibility only accentuated that fact. However, to Ember's surprise, her Pokemon bounced back almost immediately. As she clambered to her feet once again, Kelly's eyes stood out with a muted but unmistakable red hue rather than the everyday colorlessness. Creeping uncertainty gripped Emberlyn as she noticed it but, conveniently, overlooked it as a reflection of the scarlet leaves surrounding of all of Ecruteak mixed with her own anxiety getting to her. Regardless, she knew the battle needed to end quickly.
-------"Okay, Kelly… We're going to lower her defenses again, okay? Can you do a Leer for me, girl?"
Hunching more than she instinctively did, Kelly Hops' not-at-all-colored eyes gleamed as she carried out the act.
-------Sequoia took it head-on with arrogant nonchalance as she prepared for her Trainer's succeeding order. "Rush in and hit it with all you've got!"
She was off again, tearing up turf with those sharp, sharp hooves. Emberlyn felt her stomach clamp together like a Cloyster shell, her throat go arid, but miraculously she spoke up, stridently: "Zen Headbutt, head on!"
-------Kelly must not have been thinking minutely either for she took the command and ran recklessly with. The Sableye broke into a lightning-quick pace with her thoughts not even collected until her collision path with Sequoia was at its very shortest. Inches away—Emberlyn could've sworn it was inches away—was when the signature blue glow blossomed from her skull, like heavenly light, and the Sableye thrust that pent-up energy right into the Stantler's chest.
-------BOOM! Like an explosion, they were both flung apart, Kelly falling onto her back, Sequoia collapsing out of anguish, and the crowd went utterly wild. The children were hooting, hollering, cheering, chanting. The battle was over and the rousing, celebratory callings were all given in Emberlyn's favor. The visitor from Kalos and her scary little goblin; they'd did it. They'd won their first battle! With that thought, Ember's stress melted away like butter and she smiled.
-------Pots looked sick, dropping to his partner's side as she struggled to get off the ground, but she soon proved to be well enough, though thoroughly petulant. Sequoia sent a parting, loathing glass in Kelly's direction as Trina massaged Potion into her fur. She only turned away when Pots fed her an Oran berry and which she appeared reluctantly satisfied.
-------Emberlyn, in a surge of appreciation, turned to her own Pokemon still sprawled out on the dirt. She wanted to feed her berries, coo to her how fantastic she'd been, but the feeling vanished with a rising chill replacing it instead. Kelly was groaning. Kelly snarled and hissed and spat, she hummed and chirped and cackled… she didn't groan, out of disorientation, out of agony. The Sableye always made jagged movements but, as she fought hard to regain her balance, Ember was certain she was entirely lost. The world must have been a great revolving blur to her and what her head felt like Emberlyn couldn't begin to surmise.
-------"Well, guess you were right after all." Pots suddenly popped up in front of her and she was forced to snap her attention towards him. He carried no evident sullenness in his expression though of course he did look overall pleased. At the very least, he approached her pleasantly.
-------"I'm not the kind of guy who makes excuses when he loses. You're a pretty decent battler, Emberlyn. I bet your… little Pokemon… will get even stronger in the future, so I wish you the best of luck." He shot a glance himself at Kelly Hops, rocking left and right in an apparent spell of dizziness. "Uh, you should call back your Pokemon. They look like they need to recover a little."
-------"No duh." The venomous retort was inspired mostly for an inner disappointment in herself but, alas, it ended up being voiced to the boy instead.
-------He took the opportunity to go sour himself, frowning and replying with, "Excuse me for giving a heads up. What's your problem. You won."
-------Emberlyn was silent. Her eyes drifted in a space between the schoolboy with his knit brow, awaiting a reply, and the stumbling Sableye she'd been so heedless with.
-------"Hey." He summoned her attention. "All Pokemon get hurt, okay? It's not like animals. See, if I threw a rock at a bird, that'd be a dead bird. But if threw a rock at a Pidgey, it'd recover in, like, an hour. And be incredibly pissed with me on top of that. Pokemon are all energy and battling's coded into every single one of them. They're used to this."
-------"Yeah, I know all of that, but…" Her voice trailed off. Kelly was grimacing, holding her head. "Jeez…"
-------"'Things are only gonna get tougher.' That's what my mom used to tell me. 'You just gotta get tougher too.' Remember that."
-------Emberlyn gave a shocked, hard blink at the implication. The sharp-witted Pots caught on and immediately cleared his throat, signalling a change in subject.
-------"Right, so according to tradition, I'm supposed to give you money, but screw that, honestly. You can have this instead." From his swelling left pants pocket he produced what appeared to be a fist-sized berry or nut, purple in color. "It's an apricorn. I collect them, but only the green and black ones."
-------"Why those?"
-------He shrugged. "They look the best, I guess. I don't really have a favorite color but purple definitely wouldn't be it if I could choose. But, hey. Your hair's purple so you might appreciate this more than me." Thus, he tossed her the apricorn.
-------"Well, if Sequoia's alright with it, we're probably just gonna head down to Route 37. I think I've had enough of Ecruteak for a while."
-------"No, wait," she stopped him. "I'll give you something too." Before he could make a humble refusal, from her own pocket she produced a small, milk-white stone. "Catch!"
-------It landed in his hands. The boy gave a critical appraisal, ultimately deducing, "I suppose you collect rocks, huh?"
-------"I do. My parents go nuts over rocks so I guess I got it from them," Ember informed.
-------"Could you tell me what kind of rock it is?" Pots asked.
-------"I might be but…" She shot him a playful grin. "I don't really feel like it."
-------Pots responded with, "That's a fitting enough excuse in my book," and stuffed the stone into his pocket before turning back to her to say gallanty, "Thank you, Emberlyn. For the battle and for the keepsake."
-------"You're welcome, Pots. And you don't have to call me 'Emberlyn' all the time. Ember and… yeah, Ember's fine."
-------"Alright then, Ember." He gave her a conclusionary nod. "I'll be going now. See you around?"
-------"Definitely! Oh, but be careful! I heard something about fires on Route 37 earlier."
-------"Oh, right." The familiarity drove the boy to roll his eyes. "The fires. How disastrous for someone like me who doesn't have a decent Pokemon to protect them from harm!"
-------Instantly his Stantler whirled around to stare stupefied at him.
-------"That was sarcasm, Sequoia! I was joking!"
-------He rushed to join her at the school yard's entrance, laughing and running an affectionate hand over her neck. The Stantler feigned a hurt expression before ramming him playfully in the chest, then running through the unlatched gates, Pots following close behind.
-------"Bye, you two! ...but how would you fight off fires with a Stantler?"

Time: 10: 19 am
-------After bidding farewell to the mothers at the ceremony, Emberlyn and her partner were once again walking the Ecruteak streets. Kelly reappeared from her Pokeball, clear-eyed and seemingly well-off. Nonetheless, the grey feeling of self-disappointment and regret fell upon Ember again as her Sableye materialized before her.
-------"I'm so, so sorry, Kelly. I don't know what I was thinking, making you use that move twice in a row! That was crazy stupid, I'm so sorry! I swear we'll get to training you as soon as possible so you get stronger, okay?"
-------The onslaught of relayed emotion visually bamboozled poor Kelly Hops as she tried to make heads or tails of why Ember was apologizing and pleading forgiveness. But, eventually, she ceased being taken aback and simply accepting whatever had gushed from her Trainer's mouth, making a meaningless gurgling noise—an "I suppose, I don't really know, nor do I care"—before settling on wrapping herself around Emberlyn's leg.
-------"Aww, Kelly! Stop it! You're too adorable! And that kinda hurts… ow!" Laughing regardless, she shook her leg gently, unraveling Kelly's knife-life grip. "Alright, we should get going."
-------They turned the corner to a faceful of flashing blue-and-red lights and the scream of sirens. Kelly hissed and shielded her eyes at the barrage of iridescence and Emberlyn herself took a step back as not to overwhelm herself. From a more suitable distance, she observed and quickly placed the cause of commotion: a number of fire trucks, a few police cars and, on the horizon, a great billowing cloud of ash-colored smoke.
-------"The fire… Holy—"
-------"Young lady."
-------She jumped. Spinning around, she identified the chiseled man behind her as a police officer immediately from the signature blue uniform.
-------"Can you inform me what you're doing at this end of town?"
-------"O-oh, officer! I was just…" She reconsidered telling the truth, thinking a white lie might end the exchange quicker, but ultimately felt obligated to take the earnest route. "I was about to head onto Route 37 with my Pokemon…"
-------The policeman gave a jerky nod as if it'd been just as he'd suspected. Lowly he chuckled too. "Heh. Thought your license could get you through, eh?"
-------"What? No, sir. I-I just didn't know the fire had gotten so bad…" She stiffened up. Johtoan officers may not have been as cutthroat as Kalosian ones but testing with too much audacity was undoubtedly not worth it.
-------In the distance Emberlyn could hear excerpts of poorly hushed conversations between frustrated firemen and other officials. "God, it feels like Moltres' anus out there! When do the rangers get out here to evacuate people so we don't have to go back!?" "Calm down, Blastoise. That wildfire's not gonna hurt 'cha from here, boy." "Where's that damned hippie Morty!? He's supposed to help with this type of emergency, ain't he!?"
-------"Well, now you know." The policeman that'd caught her came back into full focus. "What's your name, miss?"
-------"Emberlyn Noirceur."
-------"Alright, Ember Blackheart. This is your warning: stay away from the arch. We can't afford to have anyone leave in case that fire spreads to more than just the very back of the route. It's already making the whole place hot and humid like crazy. You can save whatever you wanted to do with your Pogeymans 'til later, okay? You won't be able to handle those kind of conditions, especially if that thing"—he made a rude jerking motion down at Kelly Hops—"is your only means of defense.
-------"Have a nice day." That finalized everything. Not a single utterance in retort could be given, especially when Emberlyn had not the heart to. Biting her lip and sending a guilty, fleeting glance over towards the route's entrance, she silently stalked away, Kelly trailing behind.
-------"C'mon, girl. We wanted to check out that tower anyway, right?"

Jason sat at a small table in the Pok?mon Center, drinking his cup of coffee. He had arrived in Johto a few days ago, and he'd spent the last few days making inquiries around town about his brother, Henry. Unfortunately, no one seemed to know anything. He honestly didn't expect to get his brothet's exact location right away, but it was a little disheartening, all the same. His Houndour was laying down at his feet, fast asleep. The little Dark Pok?mon hated being confined in a Pok?ball, so unless it was necessary, Jason tended to just let Houndour walk with him.

Anyway, Henry obviously wasn't here. Jason intended to move on to the next town soon, but there was still time to check out some of the local attractions. He was particularly interested in the Burned Tower, a massive tower that is said to be connected to multiple legendary Pok?mon. Who knows? A visit might bring him luck.

He put down his cup and bent down, scratching Houndour's head. "Hey, buddy, wake up, we're leaving." Jason said softly to his companion. Houndour yawned and woke up. The two arose and moved to the door. Once they were outside, it wasn't hard to find the tower. Harder than it seemed, because there were two. They duo walked toward the, burned, decrepit one on the left. While they walked, they admired the architecture of some of the different buildings. They walked past the Ecruteak Gym, The Kimono Theater, and the Bell Tower, noting the unique architecture of each as they progressed to the Burned Tower.

Houndour seemed to be fully awake now, and was running around Jason's feet. He had to step lightly to avoid treading on him. His eyes were glued to his toes to avoid hurting his friend. Unfortunately, his eyes weren't watching where he was going, and as a result...

WHAM!

Jason collided with somebody and fell to the ground. Houndour toppled over as well. Once Jason got to his feet and turned to the person he ran into and began to apologize, picking Houndour up as well.

Harper 'Harp' Leon
Harpand_zps1f8zopqc.gif

?So?that was a bust. Guess we?ll have to prove ourselves before we come back here.? Harp thinks out loud as she walks away from the Bell Tower, Amaris the Amaura trotting loyally at her heels. Upon coming to Ecruteak, the young trainer was eager to see the recreated legendary resting place, but upon opening the doors was informed that she was far too inexperienced to set inside such sacred ground. Disappointing, but fair. She is the first to admit she isn?t very knowledgeable when it comes to Pok?mon.

Fortunately, Ecruteak is a pretty big city, and almost every inch of it is covered in something to look at. There were still plenty of things to see before they head off for the route. Like the??Kimono Dance Theatre?? Harp reads out loud. Her eyes sparkle with excitement as she scans the sign. Oh, that looks like fun! ?Let?s check this out!?

Harp jogs excitedly towards the long building, Amaura once again trotting steadily behind her. As the two close in on the entrance to the theatre, the figure of a young woman stands before it. ?Hi there!? Harp greets with a small wave. ?Can you tell us when the next show will start??

?Right now, if you?re willing to participate.? The young woman smiles encouragingly.

?M-me? But I don?t know any of their routines.? She doesn?t have a kimono either.

The young woman giggles at the expression on Harp?s face. ?Today?s show isn?t a dance, it?s a battle.? She explains. She leans against the entrance, and one of the two massive doors begins to open, she motions for Harp to peer inside.

Doing as she?s signaled, Harp peers into the theatre. It?s?dimly lit, but she can make out seven figures.

?If a trainer can beat the seven kimono dancers, they?ll win a very special prize.? The woman seems to beam with delight as she speaks. ?An Eevee.?

?an Eevee!? Harp repeats enthusiastically. While she doesn?t know a great deal about a lot of Pok?mon, she does know Eevee?everyone knows Eevee, they?re just so cool! ?I?d love to try that challenge!?But?? Her head turns back to Amaris. ?I only have one Pok?mon?? As she?s looking to her little dino, she can see Route 37 in the corner of her eye. She only has one Pok?mon?for now. She whips her head back to the young woman. ?Will the challenge still be going on in a little while?? She asks.

?Mhm!? The young woman replies cheerfully.

?Okay, then?let?s go make some new friends, Amaris.? The excitement bubbles over Harp as she spins on her toes, now fully facing her partner.

?Amaur!? The blue dinosaur replies eagerly.

?Yeah!? Harp smiles vibrantly as she darts away from the theatre, headed for the closest route with overflowing determination.

Chapter 1.3 Ecruteak City/Route 37 - Day 1

Rayne smiled, and stepped up close to Raenhik who panted tiredly. Cleander limped slowly up to his friend and mewed in concern. Raenhik chirped briefly, and both watched as Rayne bent down and picked up the Pokeball containing the Growlithe.
"I thought your Rivalry ability might've come in handy when battling this guy, Cleander, but either this Growlithe is very powerful, or it wasn't a male at all."
Cleander tilted its head to the side and mewed.
"Ah well," Rayne shrugged and shrunk the Growlithe's Pokeball down. She attached it to her belt before she took out both Raenhik's and Cleander's Pokeballs. "Do you two want to continue training before we head back to the Center again."
Cleander and Raenhik exchanged glances before they nodded.
Rayne nodded and put the Pokeballs away. "Alright then," she nodded. "Return Raenhik, Cleander." Both Pokemon returned without a fuss. She handed the Pokeballs over to Nurse Joy for her to heal, and waited. It didn't take long – maybe fifteen minutes – before Nurse Joy returned. She bowed in thanks to Nurse Joy before she turned the scanner. She took out the Growlithe's Pokeball and placed it underneath. In a minute, the machine beeped and the screen lit up with details.

GROWLITHE
The Puppy Pokemon
Gender: FEMALE
Ability: INTIMIDATE
Moves: BITE

She smiled and took Growlithe's Pokeball. "I thought I was correct about you being female," Rayne chuckled lightly. She turned around and used her other hand to go take out Raenhik's and Cleander's Pokeballs one at a time. Raenhik was out first in a flash of light, followed by Cleander. Both were bright-eyed and clean. They chirped and mewed in excited greeting.
"Alright, I think it's time to meet our new partner," Rayne said and gestured to Growlithe's Pokeball. She tapped the indicator and the Pokeball opened. A flash of white light moved out and formed against the ground. When it faded, Growlithe looked up at her calmly. It tilted its head before Rayne kneeled down. "Hello there."
Rayne held out her hand close to Growlithe and allowed the Pokemon to sniff. After it did, it looked back at her with gray eyes. "Welcome."
Growlithe barked. Cleander moved up close and mewed. Growlithe looked away from Cleander.
Raenhik also moved up and chirped. Growlithe looked away from him too.
Rayne chuckled. "You're a little cheeky, aren't you?" Growlithe opened its eyes, snorted, and looked back at her. "So, the Pokemon next to you are Raenhik," Rayne gestured to her Torchic, "and Cleander." Rayne gestured to her Shinx. "Both have nicknames, would you like one too?"
Growlithe blinked.
"How about… Ming?" Rayne suggested.
Growlithe blinked and barked lightly.
"Well alright, Ming." Rayne smiled widely and pulled her bag from her back and dug out a case from inside. "A little treat for all of you…" She opened the box. Pokepuffs. She took three out. Two of them were Pokepuffs topped with Tamato and Sitrus berry slices. She placed one in front of Raenhik and the other in front of Ming. Then she took out another one, topped with Sitrus and Liechi berry slices and placed that in front of Cleander. "Eat up."
Raenhik and Cleander both eagerly dug in but Ming sniffed at it hesitantly.
"It's tasty," Rayne smiled. "See?"
Ming looked at Raenhik and Cleander skeptically, but bent down and licked at the cream on the Pokepuff. A moment later, Ming's stomach growled and she took a bite. Her eyes grew wide and sparkled before she devoured the Puff. She growled lightly in appreciation.
Rayne smiled.
When all three of the Pokemon finished their Pokepuffs, Ming was a little more welcoming to let Raenhik and Cleander close.
"Should we continue to train?" Rayne asked and looked at her watch. "We have about two more hours to burn before we head back to my home for dinner. There you'll get to meet a lot of my parents' Pokemon."
Her Pokemon all lit up and nodded, even Ming.

It wasn't hard to find more Pokemon to battle, and Rayne didn't leave the wild Pokemon exhausted after they were defeated. She made sure each wild Pokemon would be able to return back to its home and habitat before she continued on her way.
Raenhik, Cleander, and Ming all rotated turns in battling. Most of the Pokemon they found her Pidgey, Spinarak, or Ledyba. There were very few Vulpix, or Growlithe. Rayne thought herself lucky for finding such wonderful partners so early…

---

Rowan huffed as she looked for Allie. It had only been a few minutes, and she had already lost her partner. She knew she should have kept Allie in her Pokeball for a while, or at least until she had rested her feet long enough to be able to chase after her.
"Allie, when I find you, you're in so much trouble!" she yelled.
Rayne had only just finished with another match against a wild Pokemon, a Ledyba. Ming had finished and turned triumphantly to look at her trainer and to the other Pokemon with her. "Well done, Ming."
The Growlithe huffed and wagged her tail. She licked her lips. Was that another sign she wanted a Pokepuff?
Rayne chuckled. "Later, Ming."
Ming's ears drooped and she snorted.
"Now, let's find another-"
Rayne was cut off as a Pokemon cry caught her attention and she turned her head. Something rolled into view, and Rayne jumped back as whatever it was barreled into Ming.
Both Cleander and Raenhik jumped back in surprise and watched in shock.
Ming yelped and rolled onto her back before she jumped to her feet and growled angrily.
The rolling Pokemon stopped and uncurled.
"A Phanpy?" Rayne tilted her head to the side. "Phanpy aren't found around here…"
Ming barked angrily at the Phanpy and whipped her tail behind her in agitation.
"Enough Ming, calm down," Rayne commanded, but Ming still growled.
Rowan scowled as she didn't get a response and took a deep breath. She couldn't panic yet. Allie did things like this all the time back in Sinnoh, and she normally got bored or found her way back within an hour or so.
This isn't Sinnoh, though... she thought. Allie stood a better chance of getting lost here. She had to find her quickly. She blinked as she saw another trainer with a strangely colored Torchic, a Growlithe, a Shinx, and... Allie?

Rowan Carson (and acquaintance)

"Hey, what are you doing with my Pokemon?" Rowan asked, walking over to the trainer and her Pokemon. "Allie, get over here! You're in big trouble!"

Rayne turned her head to the trainer. Now this made a bit more sense. The Phanpy belonged to a trainer. Rayne looked at her and gave her a soft smile. "Not really doing anything," she explained. "You see, your Phanpy just appeared and bumped into Ming, my Growlithe."

Rayne gestured down to Ming, who sat back on her hunches and huffed. It watched the Phanpy with narrowed eyes before it snorted and turned away to sit at Rayne's feet. Cleander and Raenhik just watched curiously. Seeing Rayne with another trainer was new for them.
Rayne extended out her hand. "I'm Rayne."

Rowan sighed as Rayne explained what had happened. Leave it to Allie to end up bothering someone almost immediately. She clicked her teeth when Allie didn't come over and watched the little elephant reluctantly walk over to her. She felt kind of bad being so strict with her, but she didn't have much of a choice. She couldn't let Allie just do whatever she wanted.

"I'm sorry about her. She doesn't really listen to me." She huffed as she looked up at Rayne and scowled slightly. This girl was as tall as Ross, probably even taller! She hated having to look up at people. It tended to make people think less of her. She raised an eyebrow at Rayne's outstretched hand, but didn't grab it.

"I'm Rowan, and you've already met Allie."

Rayne lowered her head and just smiled gently. "I understand." She nodded. "She's an adventurous little one, isn't she?" Rayne looked at the Phanpy at Rowan's feet. "Hello there, Allie. It's not good to go off without your trainer. You never know if you'd run into someone nice or someone who wants to hurt you."

Rayne looked back up and to Rowan. "Nice to meet you Rowan." She nodded. "These are my Pokemon. Raenhik, my Torchic. Cleander, my Shinx. Ming, my Growlithe."

Rowan looked at Rayne's Pokemon curiously. She had never seen a Torchic like that before. Its colors were inverted, which was kind of strange. Part of her wondered if its feathers were dyed, or if it was just born like that. She had seen people from Jubilife and Hearthome do crazy things to their Pokemon for contests sometimes.

"Have you just been on this route catching Pokemon all day?" Rowan asked, making eye contact for a brief moment before looking away. "Allie probably came out here because she wanted some Pokemon to play with, but she hates battling so I've never caught another Pokemon before." Allie looked up when she heard her name and looked at Rayne's Pokemon excitedly.

"I have, yes," Rayne gave a nod. "Cleander and Ming are both new members of my team. Raenhik was my first Pokemon, and I got him yesterday." She looked to her Pokemon and her Torchic gave out an excited chirp in response. Rayne looked back to Rowan. "Doesn't like to battle, huh?" Rayne nodded. "Yeah, battling isn't for everyone. I understand. My father competes in Pokemon contests and only battles when necessary in them."

Cleander peeked forward and walked up to Allie, sniffing at her before purring. He gave a welcoming mew. "Are you interesting in catching another Pokemon for your team? There are a lot of Pokemon to be found on this route, including Growlithe and Shinx like my Pokemon."

Rowan looked up at Rayne as she spoke and couldn't help but silently sigh as she thought of what had happened the last time she tried to catch a Pokemon. Allie had refused to battle and instead hid in the brush until the Ponyta they had been battling got bored and left them.

"I'd love to catch another Pokemon," Rowan said, brushing some of her hair behind her ear. "But Allie's not going to want to battle them." She looked down at her Pokemon, who trumpeted shyly as the Shinx approached her.

Rayne looked down at Allie and Cleander. "There are other ways to catch a Pokemon," Rayne said before she returned her gaze to Rowan. "You can befriend a Pokemon, and that's similar to how I got Cleander. He was poisoned and I and Raenhik found him before we nursed him back to health. The next idea is a double battle. If Allie doesn't want to battle, I might be able to lend you a Pokemon of mine to help you catch a new Pokemon. There's also a third option – just throwing a Pokeball, but that doesn't really work unless the Pokemon is weakened."

Cleander mewed. "If you do want to borrow one of mine, Raenhik might be the best option. He has the most experience." Rayne nodded to the abnormally colored Torchic who puffed out its chest proudly.

Rowan scowled as she looked at Rayne. On one hand, it would be nice to have another Pokemon, but on the other hand, she didn't want to accept help from anyone. If she couldn't even catch her own Pokemon, how did she expect to be able to catch up to Rebecca?

"No thank you," she said with a huff, picking up Allie. "I don't need your help. I'll find a way to catch a Pokemon by myself." Allie trumpeted sadly as Rowan walked away from Rayne.

Rayne's smile faded and Raenhik's puffy feathers relaxed. "Oh, alright, I understand." She nodded, watched as Rowan left with her Phanpy and looked back to her Pokemon. "I guess she can do it on her own then, alright. Then we should continue our training."

Chapter 1.4 Ecruteak City/Route 37 - Day 1

By the time night crawled into the city, Rayne had decided it was time to head home. After all, she wanted to introduce her new team members to her mother and the other Pokemon. She knew she was only going to stay in Ecruteak City for a few more days at the most, so she was going to take advantage of her living and eating arrangements.
The moment she opened the door and stepped into the exercise and gym area, all eyes were back on her. Rayne had already returned her Pokemon to her Pokeballs so that none of them would be overwhelmed by the sudden attention.
Kitsune, her mother's Ninetales, was the first to come up and welcome her home. Following Kitsune, most of the other Pokemon did the same before Rayne headed up the stairs to the third floor. Her mother was preparing food in the kitchen and looked to the door when Rayne stepped inside. A smile lit up on her face and she rushed to embrace her.
"How was your first day as a trainer, sweetheart?" She asked as she led Rayne to the dining room table. "Did you catch any new Pokemon? Did you battle any other trainers? Have you scheduled your gym challenge yet? How are you feeling? Do you feel any numbness or pain in your back or legs?"
Rayne's own smile only grew wider with each question. She enjoyed how much her mother was invested in her new journey, and of course her health. "I feel completely fine," Rayne nodded. "And I got two new Pokemon on my team besides Raenhik."
Her mother clapped her hands together. "Oh, let's see them!"
Rayne nodded and pulled out her three Pokeballs, enlarged them, and tossed them to the ground. Raenhik was the first to materialize, then Cleander, and then Ming. Raenhik and Cleander chirped in greeting but Ming remained silent, until she turned and curled up at Rayne's feet.
"Oh my, a Shinx and Growlithe!" Her mother was cheerful. "What wonderful additions to a growing team." She bent down and offered her hand to sniff for Cleander. Cleander mewed and purred in greeting and allowed Rayne's mother to smooth a hand down his coat. "Your Growlithe is adorable too, but it doesn't seem to want to be pet."
"Nah," Rayne shook her head. "Ming is a bit… snooty."
Ming scoffed.
"Well," Rayne's mother stood up and moved back to the kitchen to get the food over to the dining table. "No matter." She served Rayne and herself a plate of fresh vegetables and homemade spaghetti. Then, she placed three plates of Pokemon food on the ground for Rayne's partners. "So, have you decided to battle the gym then?" She asked as she sat back down in her chair across from Rayne.
"Hmm, I'm not sure," Rayne said as she started to eat. She cast a glance down at her Pokemon to make sure they all were eating, including Ming. Then, she looked back. "I'm considering it, but I'm also considering doing contests, but I don't know the closest Hall for that."
"Ah well, you know I'll be visiting and watching you compete or contest, whatever you choose to do." Her mother smiled.
"Thank you," Rayne chuckled lightly.
"But, there's something I wanted to tell you," her mother started. "Two things actually. The first is that I heard that the gym leader, Morty, has been away from his Gym for the past two or three days. No one knows where he is."
"Doesn't he have the habit of just going off without telling anybody?" Rayne asked with a tilt of her head.
"Yes, but the Gym cannot open without him. I just wanted you to be aware, especially if you plan to challenge with your team."
Rayne nodded. "I understand. Hopefully he'll return soon then."
"Knowing how easily he can get distracted and lose track of time, I doubt it, love," Rayne's mother said. "But onto the second thing – the Kimono Girls are holding an event to all trainers. You remember how I told you each of them harnesses the power of an Eevee evolution?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, they are holding an event. If a trainer can defeat all seven of them in a row, the trainer will receive an Eevee as a gift."
Rayne froze halfway through her bite. "Come again?"
"An Eevee. The Kimono Girls are giving out an Eevee to any trainer that can defeat all seven of them in a row. There's a catch though; it's a onetime challenge. If a trainer loses, they cannot try again to receive the Eevee."
"An Eevee would be an amazing addition to my team," Rayne smiled. "It has such possibilities for evolution. Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and that new Sylveon I've heard stories about."
"Yes, it would be, but please be careful in challenging them. You should train before challenging them, especially if you want that Eevee. The challenge isn't for the faint of heart, as the Kimono Girls are actually quite strong with new trainers."
Rayne nodded and returned to her food.

The sun was gone and the stars hung overhead in the faded sky. Rayne was almost ready for bed and had prepared cushions for her own Pokemon to sleep on in her room. She had brushed and flossed, and was about to pull back the covers of her bed to get in until a light from outside her window caught her eye.
At first, she thought it was just the light to a few of the fire lamps that Ecruteak had along pathways, but this light wasn't a red-orange blue. Instead, it was a chilly blue, and it was coming from the other side of the woods, by the Burned Tower.
Rayne tilted her head to the side. What was that?
She wondered if she should just return to bed, but her curiosity got the best of her – like it always does – and she pulled on her shoes.
"Guys," she looked to her Pokemon and they opened their eyes. "I need to check something out. Do you want to stay or come?"
Raenhik immediately jumped up and chirped before it darted by Rayne's side. The little Torchic hated not being close to her.
Cleander mewed and loped over and pressed against her legs.
Ming merely yawned and stretched and also rose to her feet.
"Alright, then let's go." Rayne got up, grabbed her bag and hurried out of her house silently, but with her Pokemon at her heels.
When she reached the Burned Tower, the blue flame was gone.
Rayne had heard rumors about the Burned Tower. It was a once majestic tower and the resting grounds of a legendary Pokemon. Many years before Rayne arrived in Ecruteak City with her family, the tower caught fire and burned down. Well, at least most of it did. Now, it was empty, and signs warned of traveling inside the remains. It was dangerous and places could easily collapse.
Rayne was careful as she started up the steps, but she didn't enter into the darkness. Instead, she was cautious. Her Pokemon were at her heels and watched, but Cleander was too curious, too energetic even at this late hour and rushed inside.
"Cleander, wait-!" But Cleander disappeared into the darkness.
Rayne hesitated but was ready to go inside, however she heard several echoing footsteps inside the ruins. "C-Cleander?"
A moment later, a man stepped out of the ruins, and in his arms was Cleander. He was purring and rubbing against the other trainer's long-sleeved black shirt. Around his head, a purple bandana, and around his neck was a purple and red scarf that resembled the colors on a Misdreavus.
"Is this your Shinx?" He looked up to Rayne and offered a smile.
"Yes, he's mine," Rayne nodded and put out her arms to scoop up Cleander. "Don't run off like that again, Cleander. That's dangerous." Cleander's ears laid back against his head.
"Yes, it is, especially at this hour," he said.
Rayne looked up and nodded. "Thank you, I appreciate your help. You're… you're Morty, aren't you?"
He nodded. "You seem familiar. Have you challenged me before?" Morty asked.
"No, but I live here in the city," Rayne said. "I only just became a trainer, but I will want to challenge you when I get the chance." She paused. "I heard you weren't at your gym for several days…"
Morty gave her a smile. "I look forward to it then, and yes, you're right. I apologize. I had a few errands to run and sometimes it's hard to alert my assistances whenever I'm out doing my own things. But I'll be back in the morning, I assure you."
Rayne smiled widely. "Great, then I'll schedule my challenge in the morning."
"Take care," Morty gave her a nod before he started back down the steps and off into the darkness of the city.

When Rayne returned home, both she and her Pokemon were all exhausted. They shuffled back into Rayne's room silently and plopped back against their beds. Rayne smiled and looked over at her three Pokemon curled on their beds.
"Tomorrow, we ready ourselves for those two challenges," she whispered and her Pokemon all whimpered in agreement.

Chapter 1.2 - Teammates Galore!

"Rosie!" Jason called. Man, I hate it when she does this. he thought. Running wasn't his strong suit, and he was tiring quickly. Jason chased after her into Route 37.

Route 37 was a pretty small and ordinary Route, but it was alive with trainers, being the Route directly next to a very busy Route in Johto, Route 36.

Rose finally stopped and Jason finally caught up to her. He slumped at a nearby tree, sweating and catching his breath.
"Rose," he said, panting, "I swear, if you ever do that again-"
"Oh c'mon, Jay, you've gotta have fun for once! You're probably just jealous that I beat you here, anyway." she exclaimed.

Jason's attention had already left her, for he was more focused on the flash of beige in the corner of his eye. The object landed in the nearby tall grass. What was that?

Jason creeped towards the bush and parted the blades of grass and found a Pidgey eating a Pecha Berry. Woah! A Pidgey! He creeped towards the creature. Should I catch it? It would be helpful for my battle against Morty...

It was settled. Jason opened up his backpack and pulled out a Pokéball. He threw it up into the air and Riley, his Riolu, appeared in a flash of light.

"Alright, Riley. I want you to use Blaze Kick on that Pidgey!" Jason commanded. The Riolu nodded assuringly.

Riley's leg coated itself in flames as he lunged himself at the Tiny Bird Pokémon. The Pidgey didn't escape in time, and was hit in the left wing.

"Good job Riley!" Jason grabbed an empty Pokéball out of his bag and threw it at thewild Pidgey. It hit the dazed Pidgey, it was engulfed within the red light and was sucked into the ball.

"Yes!" Jason exlcaimed. He picked up the Pokéball containing the Pidgey. "Let's get you guys healed up."

"Your Pokémon have been restored to full health," the Nurse said cheerfully, "we hope to see you again!"
"Thanks." replied Jason. What a terrible thing to say at a hospital. Jason thought as he released Riley, due to him hating the confined space of the Pokéball, and his new Pidgey from their confinement.

"It needs a name" Rose addressed.
"I don't even know its gender." Jason said as he scoped the area and found what he was looking for. He picked up the PokéScanner and aimed it at the Pidgey. It cringed at the device. "Don't worry," he said with a chuckle, "it's completely harmless." The Scanner scanned the Bird; the monitor beeped and Jason checked the screen.

PIDGEY - Lv. 3
The Tiny Bird Pokémon
Gender: FEMALE
Ability: TANGLED FEET
Moves: TACKLE; SAND ATTACK

"Well, since you're a girl, how 'bout Mia?" Jason asked
The Pidgey chirped and perched itself onto Jason's arm. "Mia is is, then."
"Alright guys! Let's go train!"

Jason grabbed Rose's hand and they headed back to Route 37.

"So. This is yer first battle." the Trainer said. It was more of a statement than a question.
"Uh... Yeah." Jason awkwardly replied.
"Well let's get on wit' it!" the Trainer continued, "Take 'im out, Ledyba."
The Trainer launched the Pokéball from his hand, and his Ledyba emerged.

Jason's hand hovered over his belt. Ledyba, huh? Mia would be a good choice.
"Let's go Mia!"
He threw the Pokéball into the air and his Pidgey appeared in a flash of light.
"Go! Sand Attack!"
Mia flicked her wing towards the ground, kicking up dirt and sand into the opponent's eyes.

"Humph," the Trainer grumbled. "Supersonic."
A strange and unpleasant sound emanated from the bug, confusing Mia.

Ah man! It hit even with the small chance of it doing so? "You've got this, Mia! Tackle!"
Mia rammed itself into the Ledyba. The Ledyba looked dazed, but still raring to go.

"Tackle."
With extra speed, due to her 'Tangled Feet' ability, Mia was able to dodge the attack.

"Now finish it off! Tackle!"
But Mia, being confused, rammed into the side of a tree instead.

"Now's yer chance! Tackle it!"
The Ledyba thrust itself into Mia, almost knocking her out.

"Return!" Jason yelled. The dazed bird was sucked back into her Pokéball.
"Riley, you're up." he commanded the Riolu that was sitting on his shoulders. Riley jumped down and faced the opponent.
"Blaze Kick!"

Riley kicked the foe in the chest with his flame-encrusted leg. Knock out!

"Ugh." the Trainer grunted. He called his Pokémon back to its ball. "Here." He shoved a couple hundred yen into Jason's hand and stormed off, muttering under his breath.

"That was awesome, Riley!" congratulated Jason. The Riolu grinned. "Let's get you guys healed up, and we'll train a little bit more, okay?"
Riley nodded, and they rushed to the Pokémon Center.

The trio trained for about an hour, before it started turning dark. The twilight sun shot forth rays between the singed trees. A fire had broken out shortly after Jason and Rose left the Route for the first time. No one knew why these fires were starting in the first place. Maybe that guy who enslaved Riley's mother has something to do with it. This might be part of that 'plan' he was muttering about.
Jason turned his head slightly, and laying in the shade of a tree, was a Vulpix. Ooh! A Vulpix! I've never seen one in real life before!
"Rosie, check it out." whispered Jason, trying not to startle the Pokémon.
"Wow! You should catch it!" Rose exclaimed, doing the exact thing that Jason was trying to avoid in the first place.
The Vulpix's ears perked up, and it quickly pivoted its head towards Rose. Startled, the Fox shot a small flame out of its mouth. Rose yelped and sprung out of the way before the flame would hit her neck.

"Riley! Blaze Kick!" yelled Jason. Blaze Kick has become their 'go-to move', and it usually worked.
Riley kicked the Vulpix with his flaming leg, but it had no effect! The Vulpix shook it off as if it was a light breeze.
What's wrong? Even though the move wouldn't have been super effective, it still should've done a little damage.
Before both of them could react, however, the Fox shot another Ember, critically hurting the Riolu.
"Riley!" That move shouldn't have done so much damage, either! "Come back! Go, Mia!"
Jason threw a Pokéball from his belt and Mia emerged.
"Tackle!"
Mia lunged at the Vulpix, hitting it. "Great job, Mia!"
Mia cooed and went in for another attack, but the Vulpix shot one last Ember, and it hit the Tiny Bird straight in the left wing. Mia's wing was burned; she was losing health gradually.
I've gotta do something quickly! Jason hurled a Pokéball at the Vulpix. It swatted the it with its tail. Jason tried again, but to no avail.
Maybe if I weaken it a little more? "Mia! Attack with Tackle!"
Mia tackled it once more, but with decreased damage, due to the fact that she was burned.
Jason threw his last Pokéball. It hit the Vulpix square on the forehead, the Pokémon was engulfed by the light and was sucked into the Pokéball.

"Phew," he sighed, wiping his brow. He picked up the Pokéball containing his new team member, and retreated Mia.

"C'mon, Rose. Let head back to the Center before it gets too dark."

Chapter 1.5 Ecruteak City/Route 37 - Day 2

By the time Rayne woke up on her second day, it was barely light again. She was excited and ready to go. With a fresh shower and food in all their stomachs, Rayne hurried down to the first level of her house. But, before she could take one step outside, Kitsune blocked the doorway. The nine-tailed fox Pokemon chattered her teeth and sat down on her hunches.
"Kitsune, please move. We have to go out and train. We have to prepare for the gym and the Kimono Girls," she said, but Kitsune didn't budge.
"She's doing what I asked her to." Rayne spun to look at her mother. Rayne didn't see her. She must've been in the garden, and behind her trailed five young Pokemon. They were likely new additions to her mother's training team and were probably caught on her mother's last tour around the regions.
"Why?" Rayne questioned.
Her mother smirked and crossed her arms. "Because I felt it would be helpful if you were to have a match with me."
Rayne couldn't help but hold back a chuckle. "Mother, you'll defeat me in no time. You've had a majority of Pokemon for years and have battled, and won, against countless gyms. No way will I win."
"Not unless I use these Pokemon," Rayne's mother nodded to the Pokemon gathered around her. A Murkrow, Skorupi, Dratini, Treecko, Larvitar, and Rhyhorn. "These Pokemon are all young and under-experienced. Perfect battle partners and practice, especially if you plan to battle Morty and the Kimono Girls. Remember, in order to get that Eevee, you'll need to defeat all seven in a row."
Rayne looked down at her Pokemon. "I only have three Pokemon."
"Will you have just these three when you battle the Kimono Girls?" her mother asked.
"Well, I guess so, yeah," Rayne blinked. "I didn't find any other Pokemon I liked much…"
"Then it'll be a six on three," her mother winked before she walked to the blue end of the battle field and returned the Pokemon to their Pokeballs. Kitsune walked and sat at her trainer's side. "Show me the strength I know my daughter has."
Rayne merely stood there in shock, before she looked down at her partners. "Are… are you guys interested in practicing here with everyone?" She asked. After a moment, Raenhik chirped, Cleander mewed, and Ming snorted.
Rayne smiled. "I'll take that as a yes."
Rayne moved to her side, Red, and her Pokemon all followed at her heels. "Fine, it's a battle."
Merissa, her mother, nodded. She put away five of the Pokeballs but held out one. "Then this Pokemon will be my first." She tossed the Pokeball forward, and in a bright light, Skorupi materialized.
"Ming, you first," Rayne commanded and her Growlithe ran forward in a readied stance and growled. "We'll go first! Bite!" Ming lunged forward toward the Skorupi.
"Dodge." Merissa commanded, and the Skorupi scrambled out of the way. It was a blur, and Ming landed on her front paws and snapped at air. "Good. Poison Sting." With a whip of its head, the Skorupi unleashed its attack and landed a direct hit in Ming's side.
Wincing in pain, Ming lashed out, and without a command from Rayne, bit down on the Skorupi's head and threw the smaller Pokemon across the room.
"Ming!" Rayne shouted and Ming merely scoffed.
However, the Skorupi, despite getting bite in the head used its tail to help soften its landing.
"Though Skorupi is inexperienced, it still does have experience in battle," Merissa said with a shrug of its shoulder. "A small Bite like that won't do much to him. Venoshock, now!"
Skorupi nodded and darted forward expertly on its small legs. Its larger pincers glowed with a bright purplish light before it jabbed out for Ming.
"Jump back, Ming!" Rayne commanded, and her Pokemon obeyed, but Skorupi continued to jab out. "To the side! Keep dodging!" Ming did as best as she could, but she made one mistake, one slip, and Skorupi took that opportunity. It hit Ming straight in its side with its attack.
Ming yelped. Her fur dripped with a faint bit of poison and she stumbled back into the red area. Her eyes were puffy and red and she whimpered.
Rayne grit her teeth. "Poison?" She took out Ming's Pokeball. "Ming, re-"
Ming barked and shook her head angrily.
"N-no?" Rayne watched Ming turn back to Skorupi. Her Growlithe pulled back its lips and snarled loudly. Loud enough to echo in Rayne's ears.
The Skorupi cringed before it was enveloped in a faint pink light and transported back to its trainer. A moment later, another bright light shot out and Treecko materialized on the field.
"T-that was Roar," Rayne blinked. "Ming learned Roar." At her side, both Cleander and Raenhik cheered.
Ming looked back at Rayne with a determined expression, and awaited her command.
"Get in close and use Bite." Ming did just that and ran forward, despite being poisoned by Skorupi.
"Don't let it get too close. Hidden Power," Merissa said and Treecko focused. A ball of light formed at its fingertips before it throw it forward at Ming.
"Jump!" Ming jumped.
"Not so fast." Merissa smirked and her Treecko jumped too, only inched in front of Ming. "Pound." Treecko swung and knocked Ming to the ground before it landed back on its feet easily.
This isn't easy, Rayne said to herself and grit her teeth. I haven't even been able to defeat one of her Pokemon yet. I need to recall Ming. Ming was struggling back to her paws and stumbled from the poison that was slowly working through her system. Rayne raised Ming's Pokeball. "Return, Ming."
Before Ming could protest, a light returned her inside the Pokeball.
"Not a bad choice to recall her," Merissa nodded. "A trainer must always know when their Pokemon has had enough…"
Rayne nodded her head in agreement. She looked down at Raenhik. "Go, Raenhik. Your turn." Raenhik ran forward, but suddenly jumped back when Ming's Pokeball shook and opened. A moment later, Ming appeared back on the field in front of Raenhik. The Growlithe faced Treecko and growled in determination.
Rayne looked on in shock, but Merissa just smiled. "… But a trainer should always trust their Pokemon, should see what they want in a battle and if they wish to continue through with it."
Rayne's smile faded. She was nervous. Ming was a good Pokemon, but she was injured and far under-leveled compared to Skorupi and Treecko. "Raenhik, come back here. Let Ming finish." Her Torchic did exact as he was asked and Ming grunted in thanks. "Bite!"
"Treecko, let's finish this up. Hidden Power." Treecko summoned its power and shot it out at Ming.
"Jump!" Ming followed instruction and leaped over Treecko's move.
Merissa shook her head. "Pound and finish it." she commanded and her Treecko jumped forward, inches from Ming and swung out.
"Bite it's arm quickly, now!" Rayne commanded. Ming's jaws opened and snapped closed around one of Treecko's arms.
Treecko cried out and Merissa smiled as she watched. "Nice change. I see you're learning."
"Ming, throw Treecko down at the ground," Rayne commanded, and Ming did that. She whipped her head up and used her strength to toss Treecko down to the field.
"Use your tail to land," Merissa commanded, and Treecko flexed out its tail.
Ming growled and barked, still in the air, before she opened her mouth. Her mouth lit up before several small balls of fire shot out at Treecko.
Treecko's eyes grew wide and was too shocked to react before he was hit.
Ming landed on her feet.
Rayne smiled wide, her teeth flashed. "That was Ember!" she laughed in amazement. "Well done in learning another new move, Ming."
Ming was breathless but she barked and wagged her tail. Rayne knew the battle and the poison were both taking its toll.
"It's not over quite yet," Merissa explained. Treecko pulled itself up from the ground. It was panting and covered in slight burns where the Ember had hit it.
Still standing from a super-effective move, damn, Rayne grit her teeth. "Ming, use Ember!" she commanded.
"Counter it with Hidden Power." Merissa ordered. Both moves hit and exploded and casted the field with smoke. Neither of the trainers could see a thing, until parts of the smoke lit up with red-orange light. One of the Pokemon cried and was thrown out of the smoke and landed harshly against the ground. It was Treecko, and it was down. Ming raced out and stood over it with a howl.
Merissa nodded and took out a Pokeball. "Not bad. Treecko, return." Treecko returned to its Pokeball in a flash of light and then Merissa tossed another Pokeball forward. "Skorupi, time to finish what you started."
When it appeared, Skorupi clicked its pincers together. Ming faced it and growled. She was shaking, but she was more determined than ever.
"Alright, Ming, let's see if we can finish this," Rayne said. Her heart was beating quicker and quicker, and she was shaking. It felt like she couldn't even stand still. "Use Ember!"
Ming shot out her attack, but Skorupi quickly dodged it and shuffled to the side.
"Venoshock," Merissa said. Skorupi's pincers glowed and it lunged out.
Rayne knew Ming would struggle in dodging it, so… "Ming! Go straight for it! Trust me." Ming nodded and raced forward, straight at Skorupi. "Now, grab its tail with Bite and throw it."
Skorupi froze in shock as Ming moved and snapped her teeth around its tail. It cried out, and Ming tossed it into the air. Ming, however, looked like she was about to faint at any moment and wobbled on her legs.
"Consecutive Ember attacks, now!" Rayne commanded. Ming looked up and shot her attacks straight up at Skorupi. It was a hit, and Ming collapsed to the ground. Skorupi hit the ground as well soon after.
Both Pokemon were out!
Rayne sighed, her heart pumping, before she raised Ming's Pokeball. "Great job with those battles, Ming. Return and take a good rest." In a moment, Ming returned, and Merissa recalled her Skorupi as well.
"That Growlithe of yours is quite high-spirited and aggressive, in a good way," Merissa laughed. "Choose your next Pokemon."
Rayne looked down at her available Pokemon. "Cleander, your turn."
The Shinx nodded and ran out to the field.
Merissa took out a new Pokeball. "Larvitar, your turn." She tossed the Pokemon, and Larvitar appeared.
Cleander hesitantly took a step back and its fur stood on end. His tail whipped in agitation.
"Easy, calm down, Cleander," Rayne tried to coax from where she stood. "Getting worked up will not help us win."
Cleander took a deep breath and nodded.
"Start with Leer," Rayne commanded, and the attack caused Larvitar to cringe.
"Starting off with a stat reducing move?" Merissa nodded with a smile. "You're learning how to strategize. But we know how to strategize too. Sandstorm."
"Larva!" her Larvitar cried and raised its tiny arms. Around it, sand and dust kicked up and blindly kicked across the two sides of the field. Cleander closed his heads and bent down to tuck his head against one of his front legs to shield from the storm.
"Now, Bite." Larvitar rushed forward, expertly through the storm that didn't bother it one bit and grabbed onto Cleander's tail. Cleander mewled in pain and started to kick back and buck, attempting to hit Larvitar away, but it did little. Only when it released Cleander was it free. But Cleander couldn't open his eyes.
"Cleander, listen closely. Use Tackle, straight ahead." Rayne commanded and Cleander jumped forward. It landed, but hardly did any damage. Larvitar was back on its feet in just a moment.
Due to the sandstorm, Cleander whimpered. He couldn't open his eyes and the sand continued to scratch him.
"Cleander," Rayne started, and Cleander's ears flicked to attention. "I know you can't see, but you need to listen to me. I can help you. I'll be your eyes." Cleander nodded.
"Good," Merissa critiqued. "Always reassure your Pokemon you'll have its back when they need it. Now, Larvitar, use Bite!"
"Cleander, jump to your right!" Cleander did so quickly and dodged Larvitar's Bite. "Larvitar's right on your left. Turn and use Tackle." Cleander mewed and did so obediently.
"Protect," Merissa said, and right before Cleander's attack hit, he bounced off a force field.
"Shake it off, Cleander, you're okay," Rayne soothed.
Slowly, the sandstorm died and Cleander could open his eyes again. It cast another Leer at Larvitar, and Larvitar withdrew back a step.
Rayne smirked. "Tackle!"
Cleander jumped forward and hit the Larvitar harshly and knocked it from its feet. Larvitar skirted on its back down the field before it pulled itself back up.
"Shield yourself in another Sandstorm." Merissa commanded.
"Don't let it do that, Cleander. Continue with Tackle."
Before Larvitar could summon another storm, Cleander hit it square in the chest. The wind was knocked out of it and it struggled to breathe.
"Finish it," Rayne said. Cleander nodded and landed one final Tackle before Larvitar laid in a heap at Merissa's feet.
Merissa nodded. "This little one needs some training in speed and defense it seems," she said and withdrew Larvitar. "Next one." She threw out a Pokeball and Murkrow materialized in the air.
"Crap," Rayne grit her teeth. "Cleander doesn't know any Electric type moves. That would've been so handy right now."
Merissa nodded. "Yes, it would've. Murkrow, use Thunder Wave." Her Murkrow quickly shot forward, its wings grazed with the slightest yellow glow. In a swift minute, it hit Cleander before it glided back up in the air.
Cleander shook in his spot and grimaced.
"Cleander, are you alright?" Rayne asked. Cleander looked back at her and forced a grin. Rayne nodded and watched the Murkrow. "I want you to watch and wait for it to come in close."
The Murkrow circled in the sky and waited for a command. "Now." Merissa shouted, and Murkrow dove.
"Tackle, Cleander!" Rayne commanded, but Cleander was frozen. Murkrow hit him and sent him flying backwards.
"Paralysis, Rayne," Merissa explained. "There's not much you can do to get rid of paralysis in a battle. Murkrow, again."
Murkrow flew down.
"Cleander, try again," Rayne said. "I have faith in you. You can do it. Tackle!"
Cleander purred and jumped up and hit Murkrow right in the stomach. The flying Pokemon stumbling in the wind, but got right back up in the air. It looked angered. Before Merissa could issue another command, it took it in its own hands – er, wings. It darted down with fury. Merissa didn't even try to command to stop it.
"Cleander, dodge to the side and Tackle," Rayne said, and Cleander did just that, and landed one last hit against Murkrow. Murkrow cried out in fury and flew back into the sky.
"Murkrow stop," Merissa said, but Murkrow disobeyed and flew back down, right at Cleander. "Murkrow, that's enough." It continued its descent.
Merissa took out a Pokeball and pointed it out. In a light, Murkrow was stopped and withdrawn.
"W-what was that?" Rayne asked, her and Cleander both shocked.
"You won against Murkrow," Merissa said and put the Pokeball away.
"But the match wasn't finished?" Rayne looked on, confused.
"Yes, it is," Merissa sighed. "I'm battling with you to get you ready for those matches, not to have you battle against a disobedient Pokemon that has a vendetta against your own. It would be irresponsible of me to continue a match like that."
Cleander and Rayne exchanged glanced. "O-oh, I guess I understand." She looked at Cleander. "Stay out there, buddy."
Cleander nodded and turned, ready.
Merissa nodded, got out another Pokeball and tossed it forward. A massive Rhyhorn appeared. "Horn Attack."
Before Cleander could even react, and also in thanks to its paralysis, Rhyhorn landed a direct hit.
Cleander flew backwards and landed at Rayne's feet, fainted.
Rayne bent down and ran a hand down his pelt and raised his Pokeball. She smiled. "You did well, Cleander. Take a good, long rest." Cleander returned.
Rayne got back to her feet and looked to Raenhik. "This is our last chance, buddy."
Raenhik chirped and darted forward. He fluffed out his abnormally colored feathers. He was ready.
"We'll start. Rhyhorn, Horn Attack again," Merissa said. Her Rhyhorn charged straight for Raenhik.
"Raenhik, use your Speed. Around it, now," Rayne commanded and Raenhik was off like an arrow. He moved swiftly around Rhyhorn. "Low Kick." Raenhik lunged forward, moving in sync with his trainer and hit Rhyhorn in her side.
Rhyhorn grunted.
"Sandstorm," Merissa commanded. Rhyhorn was quick, though not as quick as Raenhik. She whipped up a sandstorm and knocked Raenhik back. The young Torchic was blind in the storm and squeezed his eyes shut. "Now, Horn Attack."
Raenhik was knocked back with a cry, still blinded by the storm.
Rayne gritted her teeth. "Raenhik, spin and use Flame Burst in the storm." She commanded. Raenhik did exactly that, putting his trust in his trainer. He spun and spat out the fireballs. As it hit different areas of the sand, the storm died and the sand now sparkled like glass.
"Huh," Merissa tilted her head and smiled. "That's really beautiful. If you ever went into contests, that might be a good move to use. Find a Pokemon that can use Sandstorm, and use Flame Burst. It's like a storm of sparkles. Have it rain down on an audience?" Merissa laughed. "It feels like I'm talking with your father."
Rayne smiled.
"Let's continue," Merissa said. "Double Team." Rhyhorn grunted and obeyed. In a moment, copies of Rhyhorn appeared across the field and surrounded Raenhik. "Attack!"
The multiple Rhyhorns charged.
"Raenhik, spin and use Flame Burst at the copies," Rayne commanded. Before the Rhyhorns could land their attacks, Raenhik spun and spat out fireballs. In just a few moments, all the clones were gone and the real Rhyhorn took a step back, its side burned from Raenhik's attack. "Low Kick!"
Raenhik jumped out, faster and faster with each move he made, and lashed out. Attack after attack, until Rhyhorn collapsed. It struggled to get back up but couldn't.
"Again, a good match," Merissa raised its Pokeball and returned Rhyhorn. "One last Pokemon. Let's see if you can hold your own with this one. The most powerful of my young training team. Dratini!" Merissa threw out her sixth Pokeball and the blue Dragon-type materialized. Around its neck was an orb which flickered with a flame. Almost immediately, the orb burned Dratini and it whipped its tail in determination.
"What is that?" Rayne pointed to the orb.
"Flame Orb," Merissa smiled. "You see, with some Pokemon, like my Dratini, have the ability Marvel Scale. Marvel Scale is an ability that, when a Pokemon is afflicted with a status condition, gains an incredible raise in its Defense." She chuckled lightly. "Speaking of status conditions – Dratini, use Thunder Wave!"
Dratini coiled like a snake before it shot out. Its body glowed yellow and a ray shot out at Raenhik.
"Dodge it!" Rayne commanded and her Torchic jumped out of the way, however Dratini was faster and hit Raenhik with another Thunder Wave. Raenhik hit the ground and shivered in pain from the paralysis. Rayne gritted her teeth.
"Raenhik is quick. Speed Boost," Merissa grinned. "So, anything to stop them is helpful, no matter who you battle. Dratini, Dragon Rage."
Dratini coiled and glowed with a bluish white light before it shot out and hit Raenhik in an explosion.
Raenhik skirted back and struggled back up. His feathers were unkempt and his breathing was heavy.
"Can you go on, Raenhik?" Rayne asked and Raenhik nodded. "Okay, use Flame Burst!"
Raenhik released the flames at Dratini.
"Let's finish this. Use Aqua Jet," Merissa commanded. In just a moment, Dratini was surrounded by water and, faster than Raenhik, flashed forward and hit Raenhik.
Raenhik fell down to the ground and didn't get up.
Rayne rushed forward to Raenhik and pulled him into her arms. Raenhik chirped weakly. "It's alright. You did wonderful," Rayne ran a hand through his feathers and raised his Pokemon. "I'll get you and the others healed up in no time." Raenhik returned to his Pokeball.
Rayne got to her feet as her mother walked to her side. She returned Dratini. "Well done, sweetheart, well done." She smiled. "I think you'll do well and get that Eevee."
"B-but I lost against you," Rayne said.
"Yes you did, but you faced against some Pokemon who I've started to train as competitive battlers. Dratini and Treecko, for example." Merissa explained. She walked for the doors and Rayne followed her. The two walked for the Pokemon Center. "Think of it this way; Treecko and Dratini know how to hold their own against all kinds of Pokemon and have been training with my high-leveled battlers. With the experience you've gotten in my battle, I'm sure you'll do very well against the Kimono Girls and Morty."
Rayne looked to her mother and smiled before handing her Pokeballs over to Nurse Joy. Her mother did the same, and the two sat down on the nearest cushions.
"You know, you should consider opening the first level of the house and help young trainers gain experience." Rayne suggested.
"Ah well… I don't know," Merissa shrugged lightly.
"Or even start battling gyms like you did before. Become a champion again." Rayne said.
Her mother leaned forward and kissed Rayne's forehead. "I'll consider it."

Location :: Ecruteak City; Burned Tower
Starting Time :: 10: 30 PM

-------The Burned Tower was a place so inconceivably ruined that awestruck mentions of its former glory came across as myth. Like the shed skin of some beautiful Bug-type that was once a lowly Metapod; there it strained to stand, holding an active brawl against the autumn chill, its walls too withered to stop wind from snaking in through cracks in the cindered floorboards. This miserable remain of incinerated ancestry was entirely black—for no flame would ever touch this place again if anyone could help it—with the only light cascading in through the sad semblance of a ceiling. A cover hung limply to the side overhead, exposing them all to morning: the treasure-hunters, the risk-takers, the hopelessly misplaced, the respect-payers, the tourists. They all took to their separate concerns in the consuming, solemn silence of the shrouded temple's cadaver.
-------Emberlyn was completely overtaken herself with a tingling sensation that wrestled in her chest and clawed up her throat. But, by seventeen, she was far too accustomed with the fabulous feeling of fear to un-clamp her mouth which was already twisted into a little smile. She looked mad—she knew she must have looked mad—, staring out aimlessly, her gold eyes possessing a blank giddiness, a hand layered on top to shield them from sun. Of course she went disconcerted, for she was entirely consumed in her element. The tower may as well have been a mansion. More accurately, a movie set, the eye-catching setting of Shauntal's newest novel. The scenario was already playing out in Ember's head: A girl like her, unsuspecting. The darkened corner possessing, to her imminent misfortune, sentience. From its depths, an arm grabs her own. She…
-------"AI-EEE!" A lass launches backwards into Emberlyn and the two girls crumble. Their possessions spill across the floor, their released Pokemon look startled down at them. The lass is up immediately, fervently tugging at the hem of her miniskirt. Her Minun is gathering her possessions up from the ground. Ember feels ash on her tongue.
-------"Oh my Luvdisc I am so-so sorry, I was looking down like really dumb and I'm just, we're so lost right now and I just came in the wrong place and I was just with the map here and I just looked up and I swear. I saw something. I-in the corner… u-up there—"
-------"It's fine, really!" Emberlyn interrupted with an apology so urgent its sincerity was lost in her blatant impatience.
-------The lass, taken back, glued a wild, accusatory expression onto her as she fumbled for her bag, neatly filled and shut by her obedient Hoenn-native 'mon. From her mouth came nothing more, though her eyes seemed to be spitting leagues still—Well, it certainly doesn't seem like it's 'fine', 'cause you reacted like that and…—, and she punctually took her Minun's paw and stalked off. Ember was left in peace to wallow in the shame of being so sharp with the other girl's babbling evaporated to nothingness as any meaning that could be drawn from them went entirely overlooked.
-------Kelly Hops watched merely with interest as Emberlyn drew open her bag with one hand and scooped fallen objects inside with the other. Plenty of Pokeballs and Potions, an Antidote, Awakening and Paralyz Heal, a "berry bag" (really a small drawstring bag with two Sitrus berries inside), her cellphone, her Pokedex, the giveaway pamphlet from the Pokecenter… something distinct was oddly missing.
-------Ember jerked up to see Kelly's teeth daring to enclose around a Dark Gem.
-------"Kelly Hops!" She confiscated the item immediately, wrangling it from the Sableye's razor grip. "C'mon, you know I want to keep this! Even Sycamore said normal rocks were better for you. You don't need to eat raw gems. It'd be like if I stuffed my face with galettes all the time." She'd expected for her explanation to register as dumb rambling but, interestingly, at least some of it seemed to resonate with the Sableye. She must have heard a familiar phrase, maybe had taken in account Ember's exasperation, or it could be an entirely different reason altogether. Kelly, either way, hissed, bunched up her shoulders for a bit, then slunk away to scour the blackened floorboards for a, Ho-oh forbid, healthy snack. Emberlyn felt frustration rise, considering still how much work was cut out for her, especially if she did not yet understand her very first partner. She found herself thinking back to Steven Stone. Her father and her curled up underneath the television set, he would send out his Aggron or his Cradiliy or even his ace, Metagross, and all of them would respond to him unconditionally. His orders were so clear and confident, evenly uttered, and he and his partners were always on the same wavelength. They completely understood one another, you could tell from the cocksure glint in each of their eyes as they one-by-one demolished that poor opponent's unprepared party. Ember wondered how that sort of control felt.
-------She found herself inspecting the stone in her hand, tracing the facets with her fingers. The Dark Gem was obsidian, so black only the slight reflection of sunlight prevented it from looking like a rhombus-shaped void. To her, that was what made it too mesmerizing to waste. This was one of the many gems her mother's team had dug up in Reflection Cave, one Kelly had latched onto. So thin when they brought her back to Geosenge, the poor Sableye must have been desperate for a meal. Kalos was so jam-packed with Pokemon in some places, competition amongst many species grew to hazardous extents. Emberlyn knew things were quite different in Johto. She didn't want to consider how traveling Trainers maintained themselves back home. She put the Dark Gem back in her bag.
-------Kelly Hops was dragging a desperate tongue across the ground, the gritty taste of ash seeming interesting to her for about a split second before she began hacking and spitting impassionedly. Ember shook with stifled laughter, still offering a comforting and quieting hand to Kelly. The two returned to their scheduled look-around, Ember seeing what have must been a window and rushing over for inspection. They nearly collided again with a dirty-faced mountaineer prodding around a support beam. He beamed up at Emberlyn. "Plenty of things to find around these parts, eh?" She turned away, nose scrunched in disgust. An ancient landmark as significant as this and people were already scrambling to promote themselves, digging ravenously through piles of soot like scavengers for nuggets and shards. Ember wondered how the monks must have felt. They too, few and far between, were dipped low to the ground in ceremonious gestures, the dark, lolling sleeves of their traditional garb dragging. At their feet were little stone statues, all lined against the wall, and there they placed a multitude of things: sweet-smelling flowers, berries, apricorns, dolls, money even.
-------Emberlyn came across one of these effigies at the very back on the Burned Tower's visitor-admitted floor. Concrete-grey and clearly worn, from a minute distance she estimated it was just around Kelly's slight size. The Sableye she expected to be tantalized by the pure rock figure but, again, she curiously seemed to be in full understanding, standing just before her Trainer, solemn and still.
-------Around the effigy was a sea of flowers, pale pink roses and white lilacs. The figure itself had an almost human shape, a carved head and neck sprouting from rounded, rocky shoulders. It even had a face, inscribed in the stone, the round eyes and smiling mouth of a little boy. And, finally, on this child's chest were the words, In memory of the youth that perished in the Brass Tower incident, still remembered after 150 years.
-------Oh Eikþyrnir.
Suddenly, Emberlyn was thinking of Pots, his bright eyes as he led Sequoia through the gates out onto Route 37, the same route that brought countless cops to loiter outside as smoke poured into the sky, countless more children still amongst the trees. Oh Eikþyrnir. Where were they, that boy and his Stantler? Better yet, what excuse did she have to leave them, to at least not ask where they had gone? Even as an everyday citizen, she had the authority to ask a question, especially of that utmost importance, but as a Trainer, in that situation she could easily usurp that particular policeman. She had a Trainer card, one of the most powerful items obtainable by the everyman. She knew her rights, nailed into her head since age ten. All Trainers may force entry into any numbered route regardless of county authority. She had a clear, verified privilege… and she hadn't acted like it.
-------It weighed on Emberlyn, now, that if anything happened to Pots, it would be entirely her responsibility. The obligation held her heart in a heavy bind. She felt too reluctant to rip her eyes from the idol. "Eikþyrnir, I'm terrible…
-------She felt her Sableye at her calf, emanating with confusion and anxious discomfort that drove Ember back to non-emotional reality. The girl drug the sleeve of her night black coat over her eyes. Kelly could always sense when she was bound to come to tears.
-------It would be a sign of further insensitivity if she didn't leave the figurine a token of her own, as she saw it. Thus she crouched down, drawing forth an object from her pocket. The apricorn Pots had casually tossed her. A second, more acute observation confirmed the nut-like object was more pink than violet. In her hands, it felt abnormally smooth, but it also had a sweet, pleasant scent. She set it down next to the burned-out incense and stood up in order to take her leave.
-------Emberlyn had already turned around to begin walking but Kelly Hops, whose hand she took, did not. Peripherally seeing a hostile rise of the Sableye's hunched shoulders, she whisked around yet again to see a withered blue creature clawing its way down from the remaining rafters through the claws at the tips of its wings. The Zubat made a clumsy landing near the statue and, abhorrently, struggled towards the recently-placed Apricorn. Kelly gave a menacing hiss before charging forwards when the Bat Pokemon's pace and obstinate path proved to go unbroken despite the clear warning. The Sableye's claws threw the winged creature back just as it closed in on Ember's heartfelt offering with minuscule fangs. It had an ear-piercing scream, one that Emberlyn swore manifested itself in a Supersonic blast, but it zipped by leaving nary an effect on Kelly who swung at the Zubat once more. They plummeted. However, before either she or Emberlyn could realize, another one had bared down on her, teeth embedding temporarily in her upper back before the Sableye responded rapidly with another mercilessly Scratch attack.
-------CRITICAL HIT! Emberlyn hadn't even known her Pokedex was on. She had sworn she'd powered it down earlier in the Pokemon Center but, clearly, she was either mistaken or the impact with the lass moments before had knocked sense back into it. There was no time to correct the problem as, by the time she'd begun fumbling in her bag, two more Zubat were soaring in from seemingly nowhere. They all looked equally deprived, equally thin and bony around their middles. They must have been desperate for even the smallest bit of food.
-------"Dodge that Leech Life! Scratch counter!" She was already spitting orders, Kelly responding at lightning speeds with head ducks and flying claws. But as a Zubat fell, another took its place, like they were all part of some Hydra-functioning hivemind. The commotion was beginning to attract the bewildered attention of the other Burned Tower visitors and Ember bit her lip as she wondered why these Zubat were singling her and Kelly out. She thought as her Sableye swung and swung: That one sage brought a whole basket of berries but— no, wait! He had Repel didn't he!? Shoot! That's the one thing I thought I didn't need.
-------Served her right. Kelly had sicced a hoard of swarming, screaming enemies. Supersonic was falling like rain and her little arms were beginning to aim from all the senseless pummeling. Ember had ceased calling to her so she took the opportunity before she was enclosed by all sides by the blue cloud to make a getaway, scrambling away at the most speed she could currently muster.
-------"Augh, Kelly, no!" Emberlyn looked on with fear as the Sableye unknowingly dragged the persistent crowd along with her. They barreled towards the both of them now.
-------The Pokedex sung in gleeful cacophony. ZUBAT, THE BAT POKEMON! WHEN FLYING, IT CONSTANTLY EMITS— ZUBAT, THE BAT POKEMON! WHEN FLYING— ZUBAT, THE BAT— ZUBAT, THE BAT POKEMON—!
-------"Thank you, Pokedex, I'm very much aware of what a Zubat is," Ember spat at her shoulder bag as she backed away, hands raised in a futile attempt to not seem a threat. The right thing to do, she knew, was retrieve Kelly's ball and return her but, stupidly, it was at the very depths of her possessions, or at least it most likely was, knowing her look. This was evidently the loathsome time to be an unorganized teenager.
-------The Zubat swooped in and she gave up, turning tail and breaking into a run, crying for Kelly Hops to follow. All respect for the tower's atmosphere, all acknowledgement of anyone else but her and her Pokemon, all dissipated. In her father's words, she was booking it. In her mother's words, she was dropping everything and leaving. In her Pokedex's words, she was using Run Away. No matter what it was called, it reduced the immediate world to haze as she pumped her legs powerfully over the burned, old, unsteady, withered, splintered wood.
-------She heard human cries, a thunderous crack, and then could feel nothing but a roaring, momentum-driven wind as she was thrown into a tumultuous, obsidian void.
-------She and Kelly screamed as they dropped like stones.
-------"ZUBAT, THE BAT POKEMON!" her Pokedex exclaimed.
The adventures of Emberlyn will continue after these messages!

TONY "SHADOW" O'SHEA

Tony was busy looking up at the sky and picking out images in the clouds as he walked towards the gate leading towards Route 37. He had found a Male nidoran, a Magikarp and even a Mankey. He smiled at that one. As he was walking and looking up though, he didn't realize that Kung had stopped and was now about to trip Tony. Just as he was about to trip over Kung though, Tony heard some voices ahead of him. Looking down he saw the Mankey had already stopped and proceeded to stop himself.

Ahead of them, by the gate, there was what looked like a Police Officer and a Trainer with her Sableye. Tony couldn't make out everything they were saying but he managed to catch "fire" and "....should leave....". That was enough to piece together what was happening. It seemed a fire had started on the route and was starting to spread. Now if Tony were a normal Trainer and listened to reason, then he would've just left it that and looked around the city but he was not a normal trainer. He had come this far. He wasn't about to let a little, or big, fire stop him unlike that trainer with the Sableye. To be a strong trainer, one has to be willing to take risks and not let anything stop him or her from achieving one's goals. It was clear that that girl was not a strong trainer.

Tony, waited for the right moment when the officer turned his back and ran over to the wall surrounding the city and used the little indents in the wall to climb over. Landing with soft feet, the two partners made their way deeper into the forest. On the way, they saw saw plenty of Pokemon running towards the city. Vulpix, Ledyba, Spinarak, Pidgey, Shinx...There were a ton of amazing Pokemon in these woods. None of them were the right one though. That didn't matter to Kung though as he continually tried to fight each Pokemon he saw, clearly worked into a frenzy by not just the Pokemon but also the fire that was definitely getting closer now. Tony wasn't about to let him waste his energy though, constantly calling the Mankey back to his side and patting Kung on his right shoulder, just a little behind the neck. It was one of only two ways Tony had found that could calm the Mankey when he was worked up, the other being a battle.

There was a very distinct smell in the air now, one of burning wood and smoke. Tony's nostrils began to sting as he made his way closer. It was going to become dangerous for him soon but he hadn't found the right Pokemon yet. So onwards he plunged into the forest, the fire growing ever closer and ever larger.
