Film your thoughts on horror films

you know, now thinking about this, i should've made this closer to october but whatever

are you the person who barely flinches at all, and are used to horror films or are you someone who gets nightmares for weeks on end from seeing one?

i mean, at the present moment i don't think there's any that comes to mind, but the reason why i bring this up is because i remember whenever the TV would have random horror netflix movies on, and as much of a straight face as I try to put on, I really cant stand some of the grotesque stuff I see sometimes lol

what about you guys??

I feel like me staying up past midnight to catch horror films on TV as a child has desensitised me to most horror films. That being said, I don't actively go out of my way to watch them either now although I do enjoy the genre...

I think my first run in with a horror flick was that infamous sun bed scene from Final Destination 3... now that has stayed with me for 13 years

Okay so I was trying to remember the last horror movie that I watched and it was this one:

Before I Wake.

Here's the thing. The gist of that movie is that there's a kid who summons a monster that eats people everytime he has a nightmare. And like... the movie has some pretty gross effects like tons of blood, bones cracking (and I REALLY hate that) and just ughhhhh there was even one scene with eyeballs falling out aaaaa this movie is just so extra with the grossness lol

I flinch a lot at jump scares and cover my eyes during excessive gory scenes (99% of any Saw movie for example) but I don't get nightmares from movies anymore. The scariest I've seen is the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There's not a ton of gore in it but boy does it build up suspense. It Follows is the most unique horror film I've seen and the one I usually recommend when someone wants to watch something more modern. I'm on the fence about the Halloween reboot. There are things I like about it and just as many that I don't.

I love a good horror! Cheesy slashers, psychological thriller, torture porn, and everything in between! I finally watched the Japanese horror movie The Audition last weekend too. :)

Have you seen Another? It's a Japanese horror anime series but I really recommend it based on what youve said you like!!

I love horror movies even though I don't even flinch during most of them lol

I'm not typically interested in the horror genre, although I do occasionally watch horror movies around Halloween just to get into the spirit. But I'm not into gory movies, more like just psychological thrillers.

Horror is probably my favorite genre. but after years of watching horror movies, since I was a child, I don't really feel anything.
Like, I don't get horrified anymore.
Still, I can recognize when something is creepy, and I can recognize when a horror movie is a good movie, period. Sometimes a horror movie is good and it has nothing to do with the horror. A good example for me would be The Haunting of Hill House(not a movie but still a horror masterpiece).

I don't particularly care for most horror films because they tend to rely far too heavily on cliches and gore, which I find predictable and boring. That being said, I love horror as a whole and a lot of things that I make have horror elements in them. I enjoy YouTube channels that focus on horror like Mr. Nightmare, Expo, and some hodgepodge ones that I'll watch randomly without knowing much about the channel. And I like when John Wolfe plays horror games though I find most horror games to be pretty crap, too. (Resident Evil VII was amazing and I loved the return to form because V and VI were awful action games).

I do enjoy the cheesy slashers but I find them more fun and hilarious than actually scary. The Exorcist was a good movie, if not a bit too slow for my liking, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the first horror movie I ever watched so I have an affinity for the first one, and I like Michael Meyers just in general (even when I get tired of him killing naked ladies all the time). I also really liked The Conjuring and the antagonist demon was the first time since I was a kid that I was genuinely afraid of. I'm not normally afraid of horror movies so that was a lot of fun for me to actually be scared (didn't help that at the time I was living in a place where my room also had the drop-down ladder to a creepy attic, lmao).

I find that Japan does horror amazingly well -- their yokai and monsters are a lot of fun. I've binged some Junji Ito, too, but he's a mangaka and not a film director/writer (though they're coming out with a Spirals series/movie and it looks really good so I'm excited about that). With Japanese horror movies, I find that they can be really up the wall with their themes and tropes. Someone above mentioned The Audition and I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. But mostly, I just like reading up on Japanese monster lore and I've gotten bored by some Japanese horror movies.

Also, they have a whole collection of really, really good short horror movies on YouTube which were so much fun to watch. "Mama" was awesome, plus a few others that were exceptionally creepy. I love horror, I just wish people would play around with it more and not rely so much on cliche crap.

I'm a huge fan of the slow burn atmospheric films. Lake Mungo is a great one!

At some point I want to find some horror movies to watch and see how I react to them. I haven't seen too many, though judging by the few things I have watched that kind of stuff doesn't really affect me...unless it's late at night, and thankfully I can feel my limit coming and know when to stop before I get entirely creeped out by everything. Though I'd rather skip any with gratuitous gore, because that's definitely not my thing.

Halloween just passed but here's more spooky stuff for you to discuss.

Personally I enjoy watching some good horror movies. It was my mom who gave me the virus, she liked the genre and had a good collection of them. Sadly, most recent ones was (at least for me) forgettable at best outside of Hereditary (2018) and The Witch (2015).

as for movies i recommend, i will never tire of advocating for candyman and child's play 2: both are the best in their genre of horror, in particular candyman

It's entirely my fault, I did a quick search and somehow I didn't find this thread. Heck, I even completly missed the right forum for it. Why I am bad ? T.T
I know a lot of people can't stand bone crunches.

As for me, I don't flinch at all or only on cheap loud jumpscares. I must have been desensitised a long time ago.

I watch way too many horror movies, but i I still jump at the well made jumpscares

I really love the older horror classics. There was a long time where I felt horror movies kind of missed the point and were more focused on effects and grossing people out than on actual suspense and atmosphere - which is odd I guess given how cartoonishly violent old slashers were. There was just something missing I guess.

That being said, over the last several years I feel like horror has gotten really good again and I need to make a point of watching newer stuff because some of it looks really good.

I love Eldritch/Lovecraftian horror but most of the time in the movies, they try way too hard and end up missing the point.
